So Shaded Woods:
Cool idea but curse sucks. At least I can break the barrels with my throwing knives. I don't know if I'm here to early or what. I spammed a scorpion guy and he never even attacked me. Hope he wasn't an NPC!

Is there a checklist of stuff I should do before hopping in to new game +?

This couldn't possibly contain more spoilers, so don't even think about reading this unless you're ready to move to NG+.

Go back to Smelter Demon to fight Pursuer again
Do all 3 giant memories, the Dragon memory, and kill the giants before the Rotten
Join the Darkness covenant, beat all 3 areas, fight and kill Darklurker
Kill Ancient Dragon
Kill Vendrick, get his soul + armor
Spend 50k + souls on McDuff to get his cheevo
Spend 12k on Ladder guy for his cheevo
Join every covenant for cheevos
Buy all the items off the covenant leaders
Buy all the spells from all the vendors
Revisit Wellager and the Vampire, they will give you items for talking to them again after killing the giant lord / visiting the king.
Invade/Kill Priest Lady
Kill every NPC in the game, except for the old item lady in Majula. Off the top of my head the ones worth killing are - McDuff, Vendor in Iron Keep, Armor salesman, Blue Sentinel covenant leader, Red Sentinel covenant leader, Pate/Creighton, Firekeepers, Hex mage salesman, and Pardoner priest. All of these drop something good/unique, or unlock an armor set on the item lady in Majula. The rest of the NPCs have some drops, but I recall them being mostly garbage, useless, or stuff you've already gotten before. I killed every NPC possible except for the headless guy, moonlight sword guy, and the masked lady (forgot these). Not sure what they drop when killed.
Go to item lady in Majula to buy a lot of the NPC armor sets of people you just killed, you're going to need 100-200k+ souls for this.

Optional, but might be worth doing now:
Use Bonfire Ascetic to get some of the NG+ boss souls if you want to use their weapon for NG+.
Try to do the Moonlight Sword guy or Mask lady quest line with bonfire ascetics if you didn't summon them for those bosses before. It's still possible to do this post game as long as the NPC is still there. However, the last spot the Mask Lady goes to is a 1 time conversation, once she leaves there youre SOL until your next playthrough. Also, since they have to live through these fights, the bonfire ascetic version of some of these bosses are super difficult to accomplish this on. NG+ version will be the same though.

Hah, I had completely forgotten about the Monumental! Even then though, it's just a huge exposition dump that amounts to: "We fought Demons a long time ago and locked them away, giving each of these few guys a key. Go get them!" That's not much of a story. I did the same thing in Link to the Past.

People are talking about how vague the Souls games are to the players actual purpose. Regardless of how much of a story is there, it's pretty clearly explained what your purpose is early on.

If they bitch about one letter, then they shouldn't be in the thread to begin with. That's my thought at least. At least my way we give everyone a chance of not completely spoiling something. Note: I say "We" because everyone in this thread, including me, have been horrible with spoiler context. I'm working on getting better at it :)

It's the nature of the beast really because everyone finds different things a spoiler. I don't find the names of places spoilers at all because I have no context for them, boss names aren't a spoiler either but when people say "so and so is really hard" then I guess it is.

But not everyone is the same as me therefore it's hard judge what others consider spoilers. Some people even find weapon names spoilers

I'm fighting this dude right now and hate it. Is there a way to light up the room? He knocks out two torches in the intro scene but I seem unable to reach them and I can't lock into him for shit.

Yes,
you need a key. I have no idea where to find it and I though I explored Lost Bastille pretty thoroughly. Fight is ok without light though.

Has no one tried this yet? Is it worth it?

If it improves your damage output, then yes it's worth it. Infusing isn't irrevocable; if you want to revert your weapon to its basic state or change its infusion you can do so as many times as you want without losing any upgrade progress.

I think you need to get
the Bastille key first from beating the Belfry Luna area. That unlocks the 4 gates near the boss (the 2 heading back to the bonfire, and the 2 on the sides of the fog gate). The 2 gates on the sides of the fog gate have an oil channel that can be lit with a torch which lights up each torch. I didn't find this out until after beating him though, so I'm not sure if it'll work that way.

If you're looking to get to Belfry Luna, you'll need to go down the ladder from the Servant's Quarters bonfire, I think. You'll need a Pharros' Lockstone to reveal the location though, I think.

Look in the room under the second bonfire. The one after the
Three Sentinels
boss fight.

i'm a sorcerer and i have approx 80 fucking chimes, but only the starting catalyst and the bone catalyst. I'm at
drangleic
and i still haven't found a decent fucking catalyst. Any one in the areas i've already been to?
I found the beggining staff to be more then enough for most of the game becuase of it's higher casting speed. I didnt find a replacment up until the last area of the game, I've heard of some other ones that are good but they didnt gel with me.

Was fighting
The Rotten or The Rotter, forgot his name exactly
. Didnt checked if my equipment was set up properly. He hit me hard, instead of drinking an estus flask, I threw one of those rocks that says "very goooooood". He hit me again and I was dead.

Well at least I was able to kill him on my 3rd try

as a pure melee/dual wield build I loved the tension during TLS battle. Especially if you forgot to lighten up the place like me haha

... You can lighten up the place?

As a fellow pure melee build though(With no shield), gotta agree that boss fight was tight.

Yeah, that was my problem as well. When he does his dodge, it disengages lock on. My advice, forget lockon and turn manually, it does more harm than good in this fight.

EDIT: you could try wielding a torch yourself, but I found that a shield really helped against his sweeping combos.

EDIT2: oh, I see you can
actually relight the torches
, very cool

Is that chest destroyable? I thought I looked down there but I never got a
key
, or at least not one for those
doors around the Lost Sinner.

Nah you're not looking for that in there. Look at the walls.

If you want specifics:
Use a Pharos Lockstone on the device on the wall to reveal an illusory wall that opens up a short, optional area. Clear the area and the boss and you get the key you need.

You mean like "Find 4 Big Souls, and then talk to the King."?

I don't really understand why you are supposed to get the 4 big souls and talk to the king.

You don't even need ANY of the 4 big souls to open the door to Drangleic Castle. You NEVER speak with the king. You never even interact with the king, unless you want to kill him. In fact, the entire thing was pointless. All you needed was the ring to open the kings door in Drangleic Castle, and to get the ladder guy to build you a bridge to that tiny hut!

The emerald maiden should of just given you a quest to build a battering ram and a ladder. That's all the hero would of needed to beat the game.

I think it's fair to say the plot in DS2 is pointless. There is great story and lore here, but there is absolutely no plot, none. The end boss is also kind of a joke both in mechanics and story. She is the Deathwing of Dark Souls bosses.

Ah that's probably why I missed it.
No Pharos Lockstone. I'm being really stingy with them because they are (for me still) so limited.

So far I've beaten the following 6 early game bosses:
Last Giant, Pursuer, Old Dragonslayer, Dragonrider, No Man's Wharf boss (I forget the name) and Ruin Sentinels (via the Pursuer entrance)
. I feel like I should press on through B
astille now that I've arrived at the proper entrance (via No Man's Wharf
) but I'm getting fed up as I feel like my DEX build hasn't had any decent new stuff in ages and from what I've read in here, I'd be best pressing down the path towards I
ron Keep to get the Dull Ember, the Uchi and the BSK
. Would that be a good idea? I'm only SL30 with all my points in VGR and END besides 1 STR to equip the fire long sword - should I expect to get my arse kicked heading there now?

I don't really understand why you are supposed to get the 4 big souls and talk to the king.

Oh you know man, cuz everyone wants to talk to the king. I mean, you'll die and resurrect yourself just to talk to the king. When you finally get to him though you'll forget everything you were going to ask and all that will come out will be, "Oh hey, so you're a King, that's cool huh?"

Ah that's probably why I missed it.

Me too.
I've got two on me right now but after seemingly wasting one in Doors of Pharos I've become very selective.

Oh I see, I forgot about that. I beat the guy without anyways.

I'm sure a lot of people did. All it does is return lock on range to normal.

No one I helped with the fight had lit the oil. And when people came into my world to help me out they ran into those rooms and seemed a little surprised to find them open and lit up.

I'm going to go back and light all these areas.

Lost Bastille looks miles better with the sconces lit throughout. I'm also hoping
it will carry through to NG+, but it probably won't. I just wish I could light sconces with a fire arrow (like Zelda) or a fire sword. That would really help.

Finally had my first multiplayer experience today, I played the first game forcibly offline due to the XBL Party chat restriction. Took advice posted here and just started putting down my sign in front of boss rooms to get experience fighting them, did that a few times, then went human and summoned other players into my game and beat the bosses on my first try. So good :D. I know you get the Token of Fidelity for helping someone kill a boss, but do you get souls as well? I couldn't tell.

Also what in the hell is up with the
bell
area/covenant. I joined them, but even being part of them I get invaded non-fucking stop in that area, I literally can't even progress there. Not entirely sure I'm supposed to be there right now anyway, but what the hell.

I don't really understand why you are supposed to get the 4 big souls and talk to the king.

*Owensboro edit "OH GOD"*

I have only gotten one soul, so I'm not going to highlight that to spoil the whole game for myself, but I can answer this perfectly in comparison to Dark Souls 1. In the beginning I didn't understand why I had to ring the 2 bells, equally as mush as I currently don't understand why I need the the 4 big souls and talk to a king. Based on my two game series sample size, that seems to be a theme of Dark Souls in general.

The one thing Demon's Souls had going for it was that you immediately knew you needed the keys from the arch-stones to lock away the demons.

Can someone explain to me how curse works in this game? I've been hit with it maybe a dozen times, but then the curse icon always disappears near instantly and I don't get petrified.

I've been wondering this. Can you see lit up things in worlds you are invading/helping? I have never once seen any of the things you can light up actually on in anyone else's world when I know I make sure to do it to every one of them in mine.

Where's the ring that lets you
talk to enemies
?

Cat in town sells it.

That's why you run straight through to the fog gate. Pisses off invaders too since they just got two long loading screens without any payoff so that's a plus in my book.

I had trouble with them until I tried using gold pine resin on my sword and then I could kill each gargoyle with 3-4 hits. The best strategy is just to kill each gargoyle before they even have a chance to team up since their attack patterns are pretty limited. You can pretty much spam attacks as long as a second gargoyle doesn't come up behind you.

Indeed. I decided to come back to this after I beat the game. As you can continue to do mop up and play as long as you want before going into NG+. Not wasting all of my resources on that part.

Got 'em. Hard as nails. Buffed up a couple of levels and used a ring that reduced physical damage. Key really is focusing on one instead of the group and trying to chip away individuals.

Really is important though, for that key, in order to
light the prisoner chamber and stabilise lock-on
. Tried the fight a couple of times before having a rest. Fuck that is going to be rough. So fast, so few openings. My mate will probably have a lot of trouble when he gets up to him tomorrow night or whatever, as I can't imagine a caster having much fun. I'll tackle it again tomorrow, need a break.

Question: Do we have a guide of DS2 stats and diminishing returns yet? I'm at the stage where I feel I'm not getting much out of strength and endurance any more, but I'd like to consult some numbers before spending my hard earned souls on other stuff.

Question 2: I've done shit fuck all with every single boss soul I've come across. Should I just keep hoarding them?

Question 3: What's with the map in the church basement and it's whole flamy flame thing?

Can someone explain to me how curse works in this game? I've been hit with it maybe a dozen times, but then the curse icon always disappears near instantly and I don't get petrified.

I think it just counts as a death. If you are human, you go hollow. And if you're already hollow, your max HP ticks down again like another death.

You can. I didn't light any of the torches anywhere but the
sinner
though, they're all useless.

So has anybody had any succes with inducing bleeding? Even with two falchions on my dex build, I've never seen it happen. Normal enemies die too quickly, and bosses never seem to be very resistant, but even bulky enemies like the turtle knights or grim reaper dudes in the lost bastille never seem to bleed. Am I missing something here?

I've always viewed bleed as useless in Souls games. Even poison throwing knives/arrows are better the few times you need to drain enemy health.

I might do the same. I thought it would be tedious but it does add to the atmosphere having these things lit.

No idea. But for that fight if the doors are unlocked, you would assume the oil is lit. But not a single person I helped had the doors open.

Curses and petrification are two different status effects in this game. Curse basically just increases your level of hollowing by one without actually killing you. If you're human when it happens you become hollow and if you're already hollow you lose another chunk of your maximum life. If you're human with phantoms summoned and you get cursed you don't lose them, which makes it possible to be hollow with co-op buddies if you summon them and then get cursed.

Petrification is basically just an instant death status effect like curse was in the first game, but without any lingering status after you respawn other than the standard penalties for death.
