Question: Do we have a guide of DS2 stats and diminishing returns yet? I'm at the stage where I feel I'm not getting much out of strength and endurance any more, but I'd like to consult some numbers before spending my hard earned souls on other stuff.

Question 2: I've done shit fuck all with every single boss soul I've come across. Should I just keep hoarding them?

Question 3: What's with the map in the church basement and it's whole flamy flame thing?

Is a good explanation of stats and when they each lose effectiveness.

There is a guy near the entrance to sinners' rise that you need to unpetrify with a later item that will trade for boss souls. You may have noticed him in a room with the exploding guys blocking the way to a bonfire. There is also another person later on that will do the same thing for other items.

Also that boss in sinners' rise is much harder then a bunch if a few other areas I think you are suppose go break off and do first. The areas also have the branch you use to unpetrify people with. May want to go do that stuff first if you are having trouble.

I have only gotten one soul, so I'm not going to highlight that to spoil the whole game for myself, but I can answer this perfectly in comparison to Dark Souls 1. In the beginning I didn't understand why I had to ring the 2 bells, equally as mush as I currently don't understand why I need the the 4 big souls and talk to a king. Based on my two game series sample size, that seems to be a theme of Dark Souls in general.

The Crestfallen Soldier tells you about the bells. I think he even admits to not knowing what they do. The bells lead to Sen's, Sen's leads to Anor Londo, and that leads you to the big cathedral which kicks off the hunt for the Lord Souls.

Emerald Herald just says to find the old souls, but no real direction for where to really begin to search.

I just freed that petrified guy that was blocking the bonfire, and he appears to sell some weapons that require the bosses souls. Is there anything worth it for a warrior built character?

I've always viewed bleed as useless in Souls games. Even poison throwing knives/arrows are better the few times you need to drain enemy health.

But in DS1, I used a backup fast bleeding weapon, like a claw, katana or painting guardian sword, for taking down bulky enemies with my dex build. This time, bleeding never seems to happen. Either the enemies' bleed resistance has been shot up through the roof, or it's a different, less obvious effect under the same name this time around, like curse.

You can. I didn't light any of the torches anywhere but the
sinner
though, they're all useless.

I like they added atmosphere and feel of doing something else to the world that comes from lighting them. I just wounder if it is that most people share your sentiment on them and just don't care to light them up, of if you just can't see if they are light up or not in other people's world.

Also something I have really enjoyed about the first blue covenant. It punishes invaders for retreating back to other areas still have monsters in them to heal over and over since the more time you are taking, the more likely a blue guy is gonna get into the world as well.

Finally beat the game, SL 140+, 50+ hours. Skipped
King Vendrick
and
Ancient Dragon
, got too tired of those two.

Started NG+, saw red phantoms, reached Heide's Tower, then decided to start an all new game in NG again.

I really do get the sense that originally the intent was to not be able to see beyond your light radius without a torch.

It really explains why the tutorial has so many - that is they were probably to teach me that they are REALLY USEFUL. But yeah, seems like they casul'd out and let me see everything all the time.

Too bad, I bet
sinner
and no man's wharf wouldve been amazing if things slipped off into the darkness. That
pharros
device in no man's would've felt like a godsent.

edit:
I probably would even have prefered if things were super dark but there was no timer on my torch, i just had to have a way/place to light it if I wanted to.

1. I saw some scaling stuff on the Das2 wikidot wiki. Not sure how accurate it is but its been good to me so far.

2. Horde them. You will come across some vendors eventually that you can trade them to.

3. Not much from what I can tell but, if you use an ascetic on a bonfire the flame will get brighter on the map and change color (at least that is what I've been told)

The crestfallen guy in Dark Souls 2 points you in the direction of the souls (at least a few of them) if you keep talking to him.

Bleed cuts your stamina bar in half, not sure how that translates to fighting in PVE

Am I underleveled? I'm at Iron Keep and my level is 80

Man, I really must've missed this place. I'm close to 120 and haven't been there yet. No soul farming or co-op, and I've been making steady progress the whole time. I'll come across it eventually I'm sure!

Didn't know that. I stopped talking to him after he offered me the covenant.

And because I got tired of crestfallen warriors. :/

He'll give you some items later on as well when you talk to him. Not sure what the requirement is, but I got some ring from him recently.

Crestfallen will also tell you where you can go if you talk to him in this game.

Here's me thinking about trying to head there at SL30. Is that a stupider idea than I thought? I don't want to put any more levels into utility stats but I don't see the point in levelling DEX till I get some decent weapons and that means going to the Iron Keep :/

I'm pretty sure the latter is correct. I only get the bleeding effect done to me once, and it wasn't the Dark Souls instant 30% loss of hp or whatever.

Okay, what the fuck?

Near end spoiler (boss):

How should I beat the giant in Memory of Orr? One hit an I'm dead. I can't see his his attacks because is so damn tall.

I finally made it past the ruin sentinels boss battle with my pure caster. I posted before but I was running basically base on all stats except for ATT 20, INT 20 and FAITH 12 level 40 ish. I must have summoned help at least 10 times, thank god for the repairable ring which allows you too stay human.

My conclusion at least at this point is that a pure caster early on is not nearly as viable as it was in Dark Souls 1. In Dark Souls 1 I created a sorcerer and only added to ATT and INT to 44 to do low level invasion. All other stats were base and the character was level 36, went through the whole game only issue was Seath who I had to use the Red Tearstone ring on.

I think in hindsight at this point I would have kept INT and ATT base, leveled up melee stats and then respeced back to pure caster at a later date. I'm still going to go pure caster for now just to see how the rest of the game goes doing that style.

Did that with everyone but him. I may just put him out of his misery items be damned.

Well if you knew the crestfallen guy in Dark Souls 1 led you in the direction of the bells, you should've assumed the guy in Dark Souls 2 would've pointed you in the direction of the souls :P

I found it funny how they keep reusing the crestfallen dude's voice actor lol.

I'm tellin ya, I got tired of his bellyaching. :D

Is it really the same actor? I thought he sounded a little different this time around.

Need help with lockstones in a certain area, you likely know which one

There are so many damn pharos doors in that one area. I only have a few stones and have no idea which ones to pick

It's the same dude and he's been around since Demon's Souls, which also had a crestfallen warrior NPC.

His voice is unmistakeable tbh.

For the boss souls you can trade them to a guy in Lost Bastille for unique weapons.

Cheers gents! Massively appreciated.

so I'm near end game, have all the warpable locations active except one that is after sinner's rise, anyone know what that is? I explored that area pretty thoroughly unless it's something to do with the
luna belfry garogyles
haven't beat that boss yet

I've been wondering this. Can you see lit up things in worlds you are invading/helping? I have never once seen any of the things you can light up actually on in anyone else's world when I know I make sure to do it to every one of them in mine.

Yeah you can. I helped a guy out in The Gutter and he had only lit some torches. I popped a fire butterfly and lit a few more up. I'd be interested to know if they stayed lit.

And don't pop a butterfly if you're near oil barrels or soaked in oil. :(

You're on the right track.

Bandit. Starts out with high HP (not as high as Knight but still fine), good Str/Dex, high Vitality so you can equip some heavier stuff, and a bow (plus axe).

Bandit also starts with the least wasted points in any of the "magic" stats, so if you don't plan to use magic at all, this is the best class for min/maxing (if you care about that).

Bandit is great, but I learned long ago how to cheese DS enemies with bow attacks. Cheap? don't give a fuck.

You know, I noticed something about the NPC
Rosabeth
yesterday, it's the same voice actress, Carina Reeves, that did the VO of Fiora in Xenoblade Chronicles. Recognized that voice right away.

Thinking of my four rings I wanna go with, so far I'm thinking:

Second Dragon Ring (Ring of Favor and Protection 2.0)
Chloranthy Ring +1 (Improved stamina regen)
Ring of Evil Eye (Regain health on kills)
And the ring that limits HP reduction when Hollow

That sound like a good combination?

Finished it today too with playtime 60+ hours and also skipped them.
Deaths count - 497. Yeah, I had a good roll.

Emerald Herald just says to find the old souls, but no real direction for where to really begin to search.

Firstly, look at what you typed. Up until you ring the second bell, you have no idea it will open Sen's Fortress. This is exactly where I am now gathering the 4 boss souls. I have no idea what they will lead to. Thus, the direction at the beginning of the games is a wash.

Secondly, after talking to Emerald Herald you then go talk to the "new" Crestfallen Warrior and he explains the 4 areas where the Souls reside talking about the Hole in the center of town, a Forest, a Tower of Fire, and whatever the last place is (I haven't gone through his entire dialogue since that first meeting). That's a hell of a lot more direction then "Above and below."

Edit: Beaten by above. Stupid work tearing me away from Dark Souls Thread fun!

What are the actual numbers on Ring of the Evil Eye? Is it better than the one that constantly restores health over time? That's the one I've been using instead, since I'm not always killing something.

This
Belfry Gargoyles 2.0
fight is ludicrously difficult, and the room beforehand routinely fills with invaders.

I love this room. I frequently farm invaders for souls :) Just kill the midgets and then start farming invaders. I heard there is another area later in the game where you can get invaded by the same covenant -- looking forward to it :)

PS. if you want to be cheap, you can even summon a white phantom to 2 v 1 on the invaders a la "Royal Woods" in Dark Souls.

Does anyone know whether things like PvP kills with the Blue Sentinels are saved if you abandon the covenant and come back? My understanding is that it will save my rank, but I'm not sure if it'll remember that I have, say, 115 out of my 150 kills needed for rank 2.

I did look at what I typed, and it shows a progression of short term goals up until the end. All you're given this time around is the end goal without the short steps like before.

I'm kinda disappointed with the first boss in Huntsman's Copse. I knew it contained
bonewheel skeletons
.
I high hopes that they would be as nerve-wrecking as their DaS counterparts and they just weren't.

Less aggressive, slower to attack and they didn't chew through my stamina bar when I blocked their attack.

That's what I'm tied on, personally. All of the other rings I'm set on, but I'm not sure on that, since I have both of those rings.
