Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Snake tomorrow then?

Don't get my hope high for that please.

Battlefield isn't really shared though. The Wii U and 3DS versions have completely different designs. The boxing arena is the first one that's just downscaled for the 3ds.

It's floating ruins for both, the Wii U version wouldn't have been quite as visible at a lower resolution. The downscaled boxing ring can just as easily be seen on both.

It's a fair point, though.

I'm pretty sure that Smash Layout will be in there but I'm trying to make a point that Sakurai probably want every playable franchise to have their own stages in 3DS and Wii U despite the fact that they don't have any games on handheld or consoles.

The problem is that we don't really have much to go on besides this stage and feelings for either point, since we've only got one stage that adheres to both possibilities so far. It's just too early to say either are happening for sure.

So glad people are starting to recognize this now.

Is anyone else starting to think that Tom Nook might actually end up being playable? He was sort of hinted at in the reveal trailer, he was a fairly popular request before Villager was confirmed and a well known character, and despite all of the people in the Smashville background, he still hasn't shown up.

I think he'd make a great unlockable character.

I would love this but I know it'd anger quite a lot of people. The trailer definitely hinted though.

That would be neat, though he could also be an AT I guess if he's not in the background

Yeah probably haha. For what it's worth, he hasn't appeared since then, not even in Villager's art (we got Isabella instead).

I suppose AT is a very real possibility too. I'm hoping Resetti sticks around though.

I already recognized it long time ago when Little Mac got announced. I brought it up in the past but no one bother to discuss about it. (Correction: I brought it up in SmashGAF IRC)

I would be absolutely fine with Tom Nook. I always support him to be playable character ever since Brawl Hype, but Villager is pretty good character as well. I wouldn't be disappointed if Tom Nook didn't make in.

Yeah I'm thinking it's a reasonable assumption, especially considering how popular New Leaf was/is. I also suspect an Animal Crossing Wii U game around the corner, so there's that too.

Yeah, you could easily argue that it's not really necessary with Villager around. I think that Animal Crossing is a big enough series though that it could get two newcomers (which has been done before for new series), while still having multiple playable character options that wouldn't be as redundant as say, Alph, while still being similar enough that it would make an easy newcomer (Lucas, Roy, etc).

Pretty sure a lot of the Tom Nook speculation was a result of Villager originally being de-confirmed. Now we have Villager Tom Nook really isn't needed for AC representation.

K.K. would be a better rep as he at least has his guitar to hit people with and can become DJ KK for a final smash.

But you can only select him after 8pm.

I'll take anything to get the DJ KK remixes in my game. I used to stand in the club and hook my 3DS to the speakers.

Sure.

Not a comparable situation at all lol.

What are they?
Villager attacks more with items that you carry around, such as the net and turnips, as well as NES moves. Nook could be more based around furnishings/finance, which is a pretty significant part of Animal Crossing.

Maybe every time Nook lands a hit, he collects money, making him stronger, but when he gets hit, he loses them and gets weaker.

I see. My experience with Animal Crossing is limited so yea, not really sure what Tom Nook does other than the guy you have to pay.

That would be something else. He can maybe use different designs of furniture as he attacks that is chosen randomly?

Neat idea.
What would a Villager even do? Pull up weeds? Catch you in his bug net?

It's a silly argument.
I said it isn't comparable because Captain Falcon's moveset was completely made up in SSB64 like most of the other characters. Sakurai is much more consistent with source material which is shown by Villager.

And I was asking that as a genuine question too, but some people get defensive about it instead of answering the question.

I would absolutely love Nook. Has more definite character than Villager, and Animal Crossing is certainly a big enough franchise to warrant two additions. Two additions in one instalment though? Eh.

I wasn't really pointing out the Falcon comparison, rather the whole "what would x even do" argument that Villager has kind of thrown out the window. Apologies for not interpreting your post as an actual question.

Maybe Mabel is a new playable character and when you play as her on this stage Sonic takes her place in the background.
No, today's screenshot is just an illustration of Sonic's new design. He didn't like all the sports tape covering him up, so Sakurai went hard in the other direction and now Sonic's only wearing an apron.

Kept the blue arms, though.

Well seeing as the villager is you in the game his moves would be based off of the player's actions that can consist of
Fishing
Bug catching
Watering flowers
Planting flowers
Planting trees
Shaking trees
Chopping down trees
Digging up stumps
Digging up things
Burying thing
Pulling weeds
Picking up items
Putting down items
the list goes on

Nook on the other hand sells items, house extensions and occasionally drinks coffee.

It really isn't a good comparison.

The weird thing is that Villager only does a few of these. We haven't seen a fishing rod move yet.

i actually came up with a moveset for him a while back

Snake tomorrow then?

Revealing him in conjunction with Ground Zeroes' release takes away from Smash Brothers itself, it'll appear as part of GZ's marketing campaign. If Snake's back, I think they'll announce him down the line, to distance themselves and keep the focus on Smash.

I can practically guarantee that Tom Nook won't be playable. There's just no reason for him to be included. The fact that a lot of people once thought Nook was the most likely Animal Crossing representative has always struck me as absurd. In Smash Bros., the first character to represent any given franchise is always the playable protagonist (if it has one) -- Animal Crossing's equivalent of Mario, Link, Samus, and Olimar is the avatar Villager. On the other hand, Tom Nook is a shopkeeper NPC. I suspect a big reason that people want/expect Nook is because he's a "real" character with an actual name.

Entertaining the prospect that Animal Crossing would get a second character (which won't happen), I don't see why it would be Tom Nook. Nintendo issued character popularity surveys for the first few games in Japan, and K.K. Slider came out on top. Tom Nook was something like #5. K.K. Slider's also the only character to appear on all six Japanese box arts. He's the closest thing the series has to a "mascot character."

I would say that would be his grab move, but damn does that sound painful. Even Links hookshot would seem tame compared to it.

Exaggerating of course, but as someone who fishes a lot... having that happen to me would be my nightmare.

Maybe it's a grab, a la Link or Samus?

Huh, what were the odds we'd both post the same suggestion back-to-back at the end of a (50ppp) page?

I just think people want to beat him up.

Villager's grab is the bug catching net, but I have a good feeling he'll use the fishing rod in his Final Smash (and maybe a taunt).

Regarding the stage differences between the 3DS and Wii U versions...

Why is everyone so sure that we're going to be getting all different stages between both versions? Sakurai never said that all stages will be unique between the two versions, and clearly the boxing ring stage confirms this. Similarly, Sakurai never said that the Wii U version would only have stages from console games, while the 3DS version would only have stages from handheld games. He only said that there would be more stages based on console games on Wii U, and more stages based on handheld games on 3DS. The Palutena's Temple stage and boxing ring stage confirm this.

I imagine quite a few franchises with more limited locations for stages or less games to pull stages from will end up sharing the same stage on both versions. I could easily see franchises like Wii Fit, Ice Climber, Game & Watch, etc. only having a single stage. Maybe even franchises like Mega Man, Star Fox, F-Zero, and WarioWare, too. I could even see the Pyrosphere stage being shared across both versions, since it's appeared on 3DS in Dead or Alive Dimensions, lol.

This. Animal Crossing is represented well enough with just Villager, anyway. We don't need Nook, and there's really no good reason why he would ever become a playable character. I think the main reason people ever supported him in the first place is because they didn't think a customizable and non-specific character like Villager would make sense (dunno why), so they turned their attention towards a specific Animal Crossing character, Tom Nook.

Maybe every time Nook lands a hit, he collects money, making him stronger, but when he gets hit, he loses them and gets weaker.

That would be interesting, it could be like Frank West in UMvC3, where he levels up and gets stronger/different attacks. And if he uses furniture in his moveset they could gradually make it more expensive looking as he gets more bells.
