Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

It's not. Look at Mortal Kombat (2011) it's balanced for competitive play, but at the same time it's easy for casuals to get in and just have fun.

Smash can do that tenfold with it's general design.

Totally agreed. There is nothing wrong with adding more depth to a game.

I still don't get why Nintendo's E3 was considered disappointing last year. Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and Suoer Smash Bros. were revealed, we got the gameplay reveal of Bayonetta 2, and new trailers for Pokémon X/Y, The Wonderful 101, and X.

Also, motherfucking Mega Man.

What if they pull a Capcom and let only one person in existence play the demo and never release it...

As far as I know, Sakurai and one other person were the only ones who played the E3 demo last year =P

Wait, the WiiU is a whole other new console? I thought it was an add-on.

Right? I bought the Gamepad from this Gamestop employee (whose uncle works at Nintendo) during his 15 while he was smoking behind the store, took it home, tried connecting it to my Wii, and realized that it's not actually a third-party peripheral

Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, and Smash were already known to be there.
Of those, 3D World had a god awful debut, looking way too much like 3D Land (though I haven't played it, and later trailers make me think this probably wasn't the case). Smash also revealed only 3 characters. Not really disappointing to me personally, but I can see how some would be coming off of Brawl's 5.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was hyped up as "Retro's New Project." It was also the only title we didn't know was going to be there.

Pokemon X and Y had almost all, if not all, of its trailers contents leak a month or two beforehand.

So all in all there were damn near no surprises.

3DWorld isn't Galaxy.
Mario Kart is a given.
DK isn't Metroid or Star Fox.
Smash Bros only had three newcomers, and only one was good. Oh and it didn't have a real name.

Oh geez, not where I was intending to go at all with that post haha
I'm still a believer in the U =)

A 3DS only demo, for whatever reason was decided on in a faraway boardroom, will be looked primarily as a confirmation that Ninty is jumping ship on the console by Gaf and the rest of the internet
I figure Sm4sh and Mario Kart will move a good amount of systems if Ninty couples their release with a nice price cut.

No Zelda
No Metroid
No [Insert old, forgotten franchise here]
No New IPs (Platinum/Monolith's shit doesn't count).

Also this.

Oh and it didn't have a real name.

It did. Super Smash Bros for Wii U & 3DS is the final title.

Now, think of how many of these aside from Bayonetta reach outside of the non-Nintendo hardcore.

edit: hell, Bayonetta/W101 fall under "it's Platinum so most don't give a shit" tier already

LOLwut

The game's not even out yet and people are making tier lists.

I think it's pretty accurate based on what we currently know.

You know, I'm under the impression that Smash is actually nearly universally-enjoyed. Sure people may not hype the game up or comb through for any inkling of information like we do here, but I don't recall seeing lots of negativity towards the series in general (apart from "Why is/isn't [name] in Smash?")

I think it's pretty accurate based on what we currently know.

C
Wolf

G
Pac-Man

This list is puddin'-pops good

Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but when this was said;

It implies to me either a limited beta or preference given to competitive players' opinions.

Considering I was being facetious about a scenario that has no chance of happening, I didn't give it much thought.

Upon reflection, I'm not sure a game where the characters are balanced for one-on-one play on "neutral" stages would much affect casual play with items and stages that can kill you.

If all characters were somewhat equally balanced, would casual players mind? Would that ruin their experience somehow? Would they even notice? I don't know honestly, but I'm inclined to think they wouldn't notice or care.

If this happens again, I'm going to personally kick Sakuai's ass.

It's out there, trust me. Mainly from the brand of insecure manchildern who think that anything that anything with colors other than grey, brown & red is for babbys & hardcore fighting game snobs who hate it just because it isn't another SFII clone.

It felt underwhelming because they didn't do an actual conference. I can only imagine the audience hype after the Mega Man reveal.

Real talk: Mega Man reveal during a press conference probably would have resulted in the most visible display of hype at E3 since the '04 Twilight Princess reveal.

I'm officially in E3 Mode.

3 months in advance, but fuck it.

After E3 2012, I no longer go into E3 mode. Last year's E3 was great, too. But the pain from 2012 still remains.

I guess it's about time to throw down some predictions. Might as well post them here, since this thread is basically Nintendo General Discussion at this point. Note that they might announce these at a Direct just before E3 like they did last year.

Wii U:

New games:

-Zelda will be there. I'm hoping it's a trailer, but wouldn't be surprised if they just bring some concept art for this year. It'll be a late 2015 game.
-Super Mario Galaxy HD Collection will be announced for an October 2014 release date.
-Miyamoto will mention that he is hard at work on his new game, but will have nothing to show.
-Super Mario 3D World DLC. Similar to New Super Luigi U, just a whole bunch of new levels. Summer 2014 release.

Old games:

-Their biggest game will be Smash Bros U. It will be playable, and Pac Man will be announced at the show. I'm praying this same build with be playable at Best Buys across North America during E3 week :)
-X will be there, playable. No release date to announce... which is a fancy way of saying 2015 in North America.
-First footage of SMTxFE. Also 2015.
-New Bayonetta 2 demo. Summer 2014 release.
-Hyrule Warriors playable demo. Fall 2014 release for North America.
-Yarn Yoshi will be there, playable. 2014 release.

Everyone will be pissed because most of the games were already announced. Deal with it. January 2013 Nintendo Direct was the once in a generation, god tier event.

3DS

New games:

-Majora's Mask 3D. November 2014. THIS IS THE YEAR BABY.
-New Super Metroid. 2015.
-Pokemon Z. Probably announced before E3, but we'll get some new info. October 2014.
-Super Mario 2D platformer that is not a NSMB game. This is my bold prediction. It'll be two years since the last 2D Mario come this November, and since they've said they only release one NSMB per platform, they're going to create a new 2D Mario series. Gotta keep dat Mario momentum going. 2014 release.

Old games:

-Smash 3DS will be playable. 2015 release. Unnecessary to release two Smash games at the same time, and Mario/Pokemon will be their big holiday games for the 3DS.
-Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will be playable. Maybe.

3DS will kick ass this E3. Unlike Wii U, it doesn't really have many games coming in the near/distant future that are already announced, so I'm expecting this E3 to have a ton of new game announcements.

One question: Did Nintendo announce any concrete release dates for games at last year's E3? I want to say no, but someone help me out.

I'd have to say casual players wouldn't mind. My friends and family just enjoy playing as their favorite characters. To casual players, smash is just a fun party game.

That's fine. I was just giving my opinion on what was said, regardless of how you meant it.

I do think that giving existing competitive players exclusive control of balance would be a bad idea, even in a limited sense of just on no-item, no stage hazard conditions. I am not against an open beta, however unlikely, occurring.

Regardless of whether casual fans would mind the changes or not, I'm against giving preference to one group of people over another like that and, in general, I'm against fan involvement in media creation.

Twitch chat trolls are not representative of any larger population!

Pokemon X/Y and Wonderful 101 were the only ones with specific dates, everything else was either TBA or a certain month

ha, there you go.

So I'm going to say this year we get a date for Pokemon Z and Bayo 2. Everything else will only get a month, season or just the year.

Maybe I'm just a Nintendo fanboy then. I seriously thought Nintendo had a fantastic showing, even if it lacked "surprises."

I would agree, but the terrible stream and lack of on stage presence diminished the impact. If they had a normal e3 conference I think more people would have been positive about it. It may not seem like a big thing, but crowd reactions to announcements like monoliths x and megaman in smash would have made the conference seem much more exciting.

last year's e3 was the best since 2006. I don't know what everyone was whining about.

Lack of "new' stuff I suppose. No matter what they brought, they were destined to be the odd one out considering the other two had new consoles to show.

I personally thought it was pretty decent.

Maybe the fact that they confined themselves to a Direct for some reason?

Nobody initially cared that it was a direct, infact one of the positives of the direct was that there was way less talking about stuff we as gamers didnt care about, and we were right, there was way less talking and way more focus on games and details about them.

The buffering was very bad tho. Especially for megaman.

bullshit
Maybe among the hardest of hardcore Nintendo fans, but not among the wider audience.
Also, the fact that Super Mario 3D World's initial reveal sucked didn't help things post-E3 Direct.

Maybe the fact that they confined themselves to a Direct for some reason?

yeah that sucked but it's not like I was at the show so I couldn't care less

the fact that they had fucking demo units set up at best buys that very WEEK more than makes up for their lack of live press conference

they better do it again this year with smash

yeah exactly, but the "new stuff" happened at the January 2013 Direct. how much more new stuff do people want? realistically speaking, of course. f-zero/metroid/star fox ain't happening for Wii U, so don't even get your hopes up =(

I wonder what the reaction would have been if they saved all the stuff they showed in January for E3...

the most disappointing stuff was lol 3d land port and retro working on FUCKING donkey kong, but it was still a damn good show for Nintendo standards.

Mega_Man_Legends_3_-_holiday_wallpaper.jpg

They need to add a trophy or sticker or something to acknowledge Mega Man Legends and HINT at Mega Man Legends 3 at all. Come on Capcom, spite Mighty No. 9 and Inafune and do it. Sakurai you gotta keep the dream aliveee.

The buffering was very bad tho. Especially for megaman.

I agree the buffering was bad, but I was in a skype call with other friends and was linked to a better stream and so I was mostly able to watch everything from when I was linked
