Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

What exactly differentiates Villager's "projectile pocket" to G&W's down special? Just that it's potentially quicker and as a result broken?
Villager takes a single projectile and can use it later. Game & Watch absorbs the damage of three projectiles and combines them into his own unique short range projectile. They're... not very similar at all.

Also G&W can only absorb energy-based projectiles if I recall correctly, whereas Villager can pick up anything.

On Tom Nook, I kinda doubt he'll be playable but I would be very much all right with it. Tom Nook is great and I always thought he would make a better AC rep than Villager anyway.

Honestly what we've seen of Villager seems really OP to me. He can grab and throw back any projectile at any time. He has an incredible upwards recovery if you don't get hit. He seemingly has a pretty darn solid forwards recovery even if you do get hit. Plus he can make walls at will, bury opponents, drop crazy bowling balls, seemingly has surprisingly good range on most of his moves...

In fact, a lot of the characters that have been elaborated on seem really, really good. Mega Man and Lucario both come to mind in that regard. It makes me wonder if Sakurai is taking the Brawl Minus approach to balance and just break every character until everything is ridiculous and relatively-well balanced for it, which I for one would be 100% all right with.

You can make literally anyone's moveset sound good if you fluff up the descriptions enough.
Even Brawl Ganondorf.

LOLwut

The game's not even out yet and people are making tier lists.

Link will suck again #truthfact

So I was thinking about how Nintendo could hype up Smash during E3 and rather than having lots of gameplay videos and maybe a new reveal or two, they should release a downloadable demo. Similar to how Injustice was promoted, is what I'm thinking. Two or three fighters and Battlefield. One demo for Wii U and one for 3DS. Furthermore, they can announce the availability of the demo as soon as their Direct/stage show concludes.

Would this be more exciting for you guys rather than info drops or videos?

Well I can finally partake in the smash hype! Any idea when the king, game & watch will be announced?

Welcome aboard the hype train Roxas! =) I've never heard of Wolf being referred to as the King, but he's definitely coming!
=P

Interesting idea. Could backfire easily if people don't like the gameplay though.

Nobody would be ready for the hype tsunami that would follow, nor would the eShop servers.

Smash 4 exhibition tournament to be held a month before the simultaneous worldwide release!

....lol who am I kidding

Maybe, but if developing the demo is going to distract from the development process, then I hope not. If it's going to mis-represent the features of the game (The awful 101 demo), then I hope not.

Can we stop it with the "hype" nonsense? Nobody is hype for this game. Matter of fact Ima make a thread and ask GAF if they're hype for this game.

It's weird to say this, but I don't want a demo. Demos take time they could be putting more into the actual game- and if it was like Nintendo's demos you could only play it so many times before they cut you off. I'd much rather wait for the actual game to come out than a demo.

I used to be all about getting demos out, but usually they only do demos for games that won't sell much in order to try to get people to buy in. Smash isn't one of those games.

I think an in store demo kiosk could be neat to have about a month before smash's release(whenever that is).

Would love one but i'm 99.9% sure they wouldn't release one. If they did tho, it'll only have 5 uses lol.

I would love a demo but Nintendo never do it for their 1st party titles :(

Welcome welcome, we dont know, but mr. game & watch chooses when to show up, not sakurai. As he is the true father of all nintendo characters.

They'll announce the Beta for the end of Evo. That will surely give them enough time to properly balance the game to the competitive scene's liking. Then upon release, Nintendo will start holding their own Smash Bros. Direct monthly tournaments, live-streamed on nintendo.com.

Yeah, maybe once Valve acquires Nintendo.

They're not doing a demo for a game we'll all buy regardless. Now X on the other hand might get one.

Edit: Bayonetta also since Platinum likes demos.

Freezie stahp. Stahp.

As much as I'm sure people will hate me for this, balancing a game for everyone to the competitive player's taste sounds like a slippery slope.

How?

Wouldn't that be the nail in the coffin for the people who say "Wii U is dead"...

LOLOL oh man a 3DS only demo
I didn't even think of that

It's not. Look at Mortal Kombat (2011) it's balanced for competitive play, but at the same time it's easy for casuals to get in and just have fun.

Smash can do that tenfold with it's general design.

better example is probably LoL and Dota, aka the two biggest games out there

I love Freezie's idea of Nintendo promoting an online or competitive Smash scene, but I agree with you that the game shouldn't be balanced for the sole sake of competition. The essence of Smash games lies in fun. Competitive-focused does not equal fun, necessarily

Turthfully if it prevent one character or more more for being outright better than the majority or worst than the majority, I wouldn't mind lol.

Because, in my opinion, it amounts to pandering, it potentially gives the competitive players an over-inflated sense of importance, & it doesn't necessarily result in a better product for most of the players.

An open beta might be ok, but one limited to only competitive players is what I am talking about.

...?
I don't think Freezie KO suggested a limited beta.

True, at this point Wii U is clinging to life support hopelessly.

Oh geez, not where I was intending to go at all with that post haha
I'm still a believer in the U =)

A 3DS only demo, for whatever reason was decided on in a faraway boardroom, will be looked primarily as a confirmation that Ninty is jumping ship on the console by Gaf and the rest of the internet
