Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

I've been invaded 4-5 times in 60 hours. 3 of those were in Doors of Pharros (covenant pvp area).

If you want to pvp, you can...if not, there's only a couple of zones where it could be a pain in the ass, but still nothing major, IMO.

It should be mentioned that rat covenant pvp isn't an invade, it summons you, and you lose nothing if you die (as the summonee).

I rolled a new alt and I was going into bastille at level 45 or so, and I got invaded by someone decked out in what looks like full havel's, and an exotic looking sword I didn't recognize, and he two shotted me. lost my human form to that nonsense.

Iron keep, farming the Alonne Knights question:

I seem to have killed them all, in the area
before Smelter Demon,
and so far no
blacksteel katana
. There are still I few Alonne Captains I can farm, but do they have a chance of dropping
the katana as well?
Will there be more knights after
smelter demon
or have I missed my chance?

:(

Somebody answer this guy! INQUIRING MINDS NEED TO KNOW!

The vendor in Iron Keep sells Jester gear. The hat increases item discovery. I got like four Blacksteel Katanas just by wearing it.

Actually the Jester set in general is cool. Hat increases item discovery, chest decreases (or nullifies?) critical attack damage, gauntlets increase souls (stacks with Covetous Silver Serpent Ring +1 I found), and legs decrease fall damage. I think it looks good too in a goofy way.

Worst case scenario, use a Bonfire Ascetic if you run out of knights (probably should kill the bosses first though), but if you have some knights I'd be surprised if you didn't get at least one.

Is it weird that my favorite boss of the game so far is the
Royal Rat Vanguard
? I just like that it was different than the usual boss fight that Souls throws at you and you had to switch up your tactics slightly.

On another note: (different later boss spoiler)
Duke's Dear Freja was pretty easy with summon help. Almost accidentally bit it by getting caught by a baby spider right when the boss had only a few hit points left though. That would have pissed me off.

Also, did anybody else get seriously caught off guard by Vengarl's body? I'd been expecting it ever since I talked to his head, but my thought process was 'okay they surprised me with the Duke it's just going to be the primal OH MY GOD BIG GUY SWINGING SWORDS'

hey quick question as i'm thinking about getting the PC version at some point so long as it's not a shit-show like the last game

i didn't enjoy the multiplayer in dark souls 1 at all and the changes they've made to the invasion mechanic sound annoying as all hell. how did that part turn out?

You'll very rarely get invaded. Actually I don't think I've ever gotten invaded outside of invasion hotspots like Belfry Luna/Sol (both these areas are short too) and Grave of Saints thus far. So don't worry about it.

I got invaded a few times in Belfry Sol yesterday and annihilated people using my Falchion +8. And this was with crazy lag.

Some guy invaded me before I dealt with all the enemies in the area, and he went over to the ballista but didn't get a chance to fire it. He was hanging in the back so I had the time to dispatch the enemies. I went over to fight him and he didn't seem that dangerous. It felt good that even with enemies in my way, he didn't get a chance to do anything to me :P

Another guy invaded me with low HP and he was hanging around the ladder past the roof. I figured he was baiting me, and I got tired of waiting for him so I just went across the roof. Went down, then the dude went up the ladder. I'm guessing he tried to do a jump attack on me or something, but I didn't give him a chance. He had some lightning club which was doing a lot of damage. Managed to heal in time, but the game was lagging so I thought I'd lose with the damage his club was doing. Somehow managed to get some easy hits in, though I wasn't sure if they'd connect with the lag. Several of them did though, and I managed to beat him.

So is it worth it to lower that bridge in the (old saints tomb/ saint something)
rat area
? Does it lead to a new area?

So during one of my co-ops sessions in Iron Keep. The world host got invaded by someone random. Being 2 on 1 should have made it easy to deal with the invader. That is what should have happened. But instead the idiot just ran and hide using a spell to transform him into a moving vase and left the invader to me.... I ended up dying without doing too much damage. I really should of just stood next to the stairs and hit it as he came up instead of being far away. I'm hopeful the host was destroyed by that invader.

P.S. Is there a ring in the game that will extend the aim/lock on of my sorcerer powers?

It lets you get a few items I think. I don't remember if you can access the place across the bridge another way.

I raised both bridges, which I don't think was that necessary, but I found more Pharros stones along the way to use so whatever.

Thanks, man.

Anyone know what the 1.02 patch has changed?

Sorted out the summoning glitch apparently.

The fact that you
can't summon anybody (as far as I could tell)
is a pretty big curveball too, depending on how you play.

So, just my general thoughts on the game right now. I haven't beaten the game yet, so take that into consideration. Also, spoilering everything just cuz.

I'm trying not to be too hard on Dark Souls 2, but it's hard for me to not personally have certain lofty expectations considering Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are two of my favorite games of the last decade. The game still has the feel of a Souls game, but at the same time it kind of doesn't. The weight of movement and attacking feels off to me, like my character feels like he's floaty when he moves but then his attacks feel slow and unresponsive.

The bosses thus far have been total letdowns for me as well. None of them feel especially challenging (thus far), the music for the bosses isn't that great, and there just seems to be a lack of inspiration behind them. I dunno, a room full of Wheel Skeletons shouldn't count as a boss to me, even if Wheel Skeletons are nightmare fuel for me.

I kind of hope the rumors that Miyazaki is making a PS4 Demon's Souls 2 are true, because to me it really feels like his influence is gone here and I'd like it back in the Souls games.

I'm being harder on the game than I know I should, I'm still having fun with it and I don't regret my purchase what so ever. But it does feel like a step backwards from Dark Souls to me.

I was same but the first part of game is very haphazard design wise like they knew game was bigger and just shoved shit here and there fill it out. It really really does get better like that feeling off seeing sens fortress or anor lando for first time better.

It opposite of dark 1 with good first have then shit last half. I think 2 is better due to gameplay changes and armour having capes...what the cloth movement is badass

I hoped they fixed the disconnect from server when the summon to another world fails. I'd really wish they have an option in menu to manually re-connect to the server. Having to quit the game and restart my save is a little annoying.

Edit: Talking specifically about the post above.

Uh. Isn't there literally an item that reads 'restores your link to other worlds'?

Don't use two stones to lower both bridges they go to the same place.

I lowered both, total brainfart because I'd already been in after lowing the first one! I hate not knowing what they're going to do though since the stones seem finite and it's easy to waste them on traps or as lightswitches. :|

So when you want to try a new playstyle (like going from sorcerer to big str weapon build), what is the best way to do that after you beat the game (i'm not there yet, but just thinking ahead)? Is it better to start NG+ and just use a Soul Vessel to redo stats or is it better to start over completely so you can choose a new class with better starting stats? I've never done NG+ on a Souls games because I usually have too many new games to play, but if I did want to replay DS2 as a new class, what would be the best way to do it?

Being able to heal in B
lood Covenant duels
sucks ass.

At worst fights last 15 minutes when everytime you get some damage done opponent spends minutes running away and chugging.

I was so pissed Felkin the Outcast wasn't selling a Staff I could use by the time I finally found him that I killed him. Never killed a friendly NPC in all my hours of this series before. Any negative effects coming my way?

Need some experienced Sorcerer tips as this is my first. I kinda don't see the value in wearing robes, even as a sorcerer. The movement restrictions aren't as bad as before, and light armor seems much more useful. I also think I should raise STR a bit to upgrade a useful shield. Am I completely wrong and bringing in my melee bias against a caster and shouldn't be equipping him this way?

The more I play, the more I fall in love with this world. I was unsure for hours where it ranks, but I think I'm ready to commit to my DS2 waifu.
From already has a bias in favor of melee,so you'd just be playing the game how from designed it.

Oh goddamn
shrine of amala
if you expect us to walk in water don't have bottomless pit drops randomly shoved in. The enemies are chumps in this area but goddamn it gorgeous but fuck water pitfalls

BROKEN STRAIGHT SWORD aka THE PAIN TRAIN

Okay, I looked for this in the last 15 pages of the thread and didn't see it so I must have seen it on Reddit.

There was a person who was praising the BSS and he called it The Pain Train so I am just mentioning that to give credit where it's due.

The BSS uses very little stamina per swing so you can swing your weapon more often. This has been represented in other Souls games, where the cheap hollows go hyper-aggressive and swing many times. It works for us too.

I compared swings between the weapons I have used in this playthrough. My character has 100 Stamina and with that I can get 7 swings with a shortsword, 6 swings with a longsword or 5 thrusts with an Estoc. I get 11 swings with the BSS.

The difference impressed me so I drank a bit more for courage, plowed some titanite into this piece of shit weapon, and took it back to the Lost Bastille. The thing is murderous! I do a bit less damage but attack for twice as long. Enemies get stunned and then don't recover. I shudder to think what a high Stamina character can do with this thing.

The moveset is alright and the range is better than other small weapons. It also looks pretty cool in a busted sort of way, it has a nice line. It's at +5 right now and has replaced my other melee weapons. I'm thinking if this weapon is made poison it could be even worse.

There is so much to learn and discover in these games!

The one area in the game I've found the torch helps is not for darkness, but seeing the edge under the water.

Is that what it does? I forgot I had that on me. Thanks for the heads up.

Is that actually what that does? I assumed that reversed the effects of burning a human effigy.

Saw this on the wiki:

Usage

After a certain amount of illegal disconnects from a multi-player session (usually while being invaded) the game puts a penalty on you. This penalty makes it so that you cannot summon or be summoned by other players. You can however, still be invaded. The bone of order is used in order to fully reconnect the player's character to the server.

Amazing! Have you considered dual wielding...?

I have made my sorcerer a pseudo-battle mage personally. I leveled up STR and DEX enough to equip certain swords (Fire longsword) and enough to use Drangleic shield which requires 16 STR. That shield is one of the best shields you can use early on if you want to remain light - it has 100% physical block which is very rare for medium shields. I've only seen one other 100% block medium shield, but it's a while before you can get that one.

As far as killing Felkin, well.. you can always revive the NPC can't you (I don't know how it works)? In any case, he sells a very nice staff if you have a certain amount of INT and Faith. The staff requires a bit of Faith which is unfortunate, but it has nice INT scaling. I'm still using it (upgraded).

Yeah, for all the talk about hollow invasions and whatnot you're going to find yourself invaded a whole lot less than in then first Dark Souls. Part of that has to do with the fact that there's no infinite use invasion item anymore, just a red sign soapstone that the host has to agree to first and cracked red eye robs which do invade but the supply is finite. Basically covenant members have to earn Tokens of Spite from using the red sign soapstone and then use those to duel other covenant members for cracked red-eye orbs, so there's two barriers to entry. The only areas where invasions are constant are the bell tower areas. And by constant I mean hilarious unbalanced, getting a new invader every few seconds until you're dead. Then there's the rat covenant areas, which are usually so unbalanced I just throw myself at the nearest trap in order to leave as soon as possible, much to the amusement of my host I'm sure.

Brightstone Cove Tseldora:

I don't know what to think about this area. I
really liked the peasants, spiders and half-spider mobs. They were all super creepy and well animated, but not very difficult. In general though the area looked pretty rough, and just funneled me down to the boss. What was up with Prowling Magus? It was over so fast.

All the spiderwebs down to the main boss were cool, and reminded me of the Chrystal Caves in DaS. I took it slow and got through the entire level without dying once, or even really getting into trouble. I summoned the NPC (Ashen Face someone) and without thinking about it, summoned a sunbro as well. I kind of wish I hadn't because they annihilated Duke Dear Freja super fast and I barely got to see it's attack pattern.

What was up with the Duke (?) and the swordsman right before the primal bonfire?
I feel like I missed tons of lore.

Either I'm over leveled or really good because I'm not dying much anymore and I'm making tons of progress. In fact, I don't know what to do with the souls I got here. I'm thinking of just upgrading my gear, and backup weapons.

Good deal, thanks soul bros.

Headless Swordsman was the body Vengral. Did you talk to his severed head (lol) at Shaded Woods?

I like the look of your girl W!CKED. I should take some pictures of mine later tonight.

Mine currently has the Fire Mage (Desert Sorceress) Hood & Top (hurray for +3 int for the hood). Couldn't get the skirt or gloves from the same set sadly. Hopefully I can get them in next playthrough, unless they show up later again in the game. So for now, to keep my load low, I am using a Penal Skirt and some random short gloves. I like the look, even if it's a little skimpy. :P

If you have less then 50% load and more so less then 30# load, you go farther in your rolls right?

Damn this game is amazing. In Lost Bastille right now, I'm at about lvl 65 after 15 hours or so.

The torch is my favorite addition. I'm OCD about setting all the lights around the levels. Makes the areas look nicer and helps both visibility and seeing where you've been.

Difficulty has been a bit on the low side but feels like it's starting to ramp up a bit.

My one complaint is that leveling up only being possible in Majula is a baffling decision. With fast travel from the start it does nothing except put a couple load screens between you and leveling up.

And I've never been invaded and recently feel like it's more difficult to find anyone to summon. Which is boring, the online stuff is a big reason why I play these games.

Do you think raising both INT and FTH is viable and/or useful? I've completed the game for the first time with a STR build and I'd like to try a magic-focused character without restricting myself to just some kind of spellls. Since there's an abundance of soul levels and the soft cap for many stats is lower than in DaS, bringing both INT and FTH to 40 seems doable. Do you think it could work?

Brightstone Cove Tseldora:

I didn't like the area immediately out of Doors of Pharos. It only really improved once it moved into the spider cavern with the webs.

There's a lot to be inferred about the church, the spiders, and the duke. I got the impression that a cult formed around Freja either under the direction of the duke and his love for his 'pet' or from the church and possibly seeing Freja as an ancient god. Lots of the structures in the area had spider motifs on the doors.

Man the "L's"boss is my only path right now and it still Jill's me when he has 5% health every time. About to snap and hope for someone to summon.

Ok I need some directional help. I'm assuming this is a mid-to-late game spoiler:

I got all 4 great souls and the bonfires lit. The Herald is telling me to head to the castle. Only problem is I have no idea where it is or what zone you get there from. I think all of my bonfires that I can travel to are now dead ends but I must have missed something.
