Do you think raising both INT and FTH is viable and/or useful? I've completed the game for the first time with a STR build and I'd like to try a magic-focused character without restricting myself to just some kind of spellls. Since there's an abundance of soul levels and the soft cap for many stats is lower than in DaS, bringing both INT and FTH to 40 seems doable. Do you think it could work?

From what I hear hexes are just as overpowered in this game as dark magic was in the last, so yes it'll probably pay off.

Nah, I don't think so. Do you have a pic?

Old
Iron King
boss:
What a terrible boss. He one of my least favorite Souls boss, only surpassed by Bed of Chaos.
Super telegraphed moves, incredibly slow, and doesn't do enough damage on any of his attack to put pressure on you. What a disappointment since the prior areas in this path had some pretty fun bosses.

Hex builds require bringing both up. 30/30 is definitely viable, but I'm not sure about 40/40 since you also need to be dumping some levels into attunement (most hexes take up two slots).

Ok I need some directional help. I'm assuming this is a mid-to-late game spoiler:

I got all 4 great souls and the bonfires lit. The Herald is telling me to head to the castle. Only problem is I have no idea where it is or what zone you get there from. I think all of my bonfires that I can travel to are now dead ends but I must have missed something.

Try revisiting
Shaded woods, 2nd
bonfire.

When I saw the area I was already expecting a
Dragon God-like
fight, didn't expect it to be worse than that fight.

I found most of the boss-fights to be pretty bland. They do change things up in NG+ though, so atleast that's something.

Someone asked earlier: I've been putting a good deal of levels into ADP, I'm in the mid 20s right now and I haven't reached a softcap yet. ADP along with END determines poise so I've been bringing them up equally.

It's hard to say exactly all it does, but with poise (abuse) I'm pretty unstoppable in mob situations. And looking at other's videos, I swear I drink Estus faster, open chests faster, etc. The biggest change I think though is any time I gen stunlocked I recover very fast. That used to be super scary, now no longer.

Some pro tips for the three statues at once in the Bastille ? The cleric gets killed (I only have a 85PHY shield so tanking is hard), the guys that I can summon die quickly too.

I'm a bandit with a Rapier+5.

I see, thanks. I guess I'll dig a bit on the wiki for spell requirements and decide. I totally ignored magic in my first playthrough on purpose, I need to catch up on the changes.

I have definitely found that to be the case as well. Having high poise helps keep me from getting stun locked, as well as letting me shrug off attackers. I've slain more that one enemy player thanks to my poise.

The response the game is getting in here is pretty soul-crushing. I feel a bit alone in my corner lol. Just reading some comments is really, really bringing me down, so I think I'll have to avoid this thread from now on.

Still my favorite Souls experience by a wide margin.

As long as you like it, that's all that matters right? I never let other people's thoughts on Rogue Galaxy or FFXII get in the way of my passion for those games.

I assume you mean the
Ruin Sentinels?
I find that it helps to summon a player and the NPC to help you. Take down the first one before leaving the ledge, then jump down to duke it out with the other two. If someone distracts one while you whittle the other down, it can be a fairly simple fight. Once you get it down to one enemy the fight is pretty much over, as long as you don't take to many risks.

didn't notice the title change until just now. Seriously everyone has that stupid hat on.

I'm in full Velstadt cosplay (minus the weapon) because I love the look of it, even if it's pretty heavy. Oddly enough I've had better luck with the 60-70% roll in PVP than with the sub-30% roll distance. I use the large club or dual regular clubs, and I find a shorter roll helps me counterattack faster.

Does anyone know if the likelihood of being summoned in an area decreases depending on the number of times you have been summoned previously or the number of times beating the area boss? I have farmed medals in
Lost Bastille
to be able to get
the sun sword
for about ten hours at this point. The summons have been rare all along, so I think I am a bit overlevelled (sl 76), but the end portion has been especially slow. The last two hours yesterday I got zero summons and now I have played for an additional hour without being summoned. This is incredibly frustrating, because I already have 18 of the 20 required medals and want to move on with the game. Should I move on to other areas?

I think most people like it plenty. Those who don't are going to be the most vocal. I have my minor gripes here and there but I am having an absolute blast at 53 hours in and I'm not even done with my first NG yet.

I'm thinking about respeccing. Anyone have any cool templates for Faith/Dex?

That was actually what I was going for pre-release but actually went for 20/40 str/dex build. Had to dump a lot for VGR/VIT/END/ADP in beginning since I started as Deprived so I didn't have a lot of points for attunement.

Okay, is there any reason that forces you into Belfry Luna? I've gone back there multiple times and I am just getting motherfucking destroyed by invaders 5 steps in every single time. I'm over level 100, and handle everything else in the game just fine, but even when I join the bell convenant I get invaded by 2 people literally non fucking stop, I haven't even been able to make it past the second floor. What is this bullshit.

I've been following both threads since the beginning and I'd say that the negative-positive ratio of reactions is pretty equal. There are a lot of people who say they really like it, but what I've noticed is that the ones who feel negatively write longer posts. That's just how it goes on gaf, I think.

Anyway, I'm really enjoying the game, and I think most people are just playin now and not caring about reactions anymore. It's a good game, so get playing. :)

People will always have different opinions. Personally, I think it's my favorite souls game. They basically took all the good from both Demon's and Dark and put it into the game. There are very few things I can complain about.

You're very overleveled for that area, and your soul memory is probably much higher than everyone else doing that boss right now. Are you actually in sunbros yet? Because the boss in the area after the covenant statue thing should still give you summons. Or beat that boss, move on, and the first boss of iron keep should be fine well into SL120.

I like this game a lot. Every Souls game has its pros and cons and there are definitely some annoying parts in DS2 (esp. around midgame, everything Bastille for example). I really like the endgame of DS2, though.

If Bastille is the low point, then I'm in for a treat for the rest of the game. I liked Bastille a lot.

Hiede's Tower of Fire on the other hand? Pretty, but uninteresting.

Vendrick is pretty easy. Grab the biggest shield you can find, always circle strafe him, block the few of his attacks that can hit you from behind and then hit him once or twice with a good weapon.

Ha thanks for the motivation, changed up my style and actually ended up liking my character more.

If you see the door shade up right when you enter you can make it to the top of the place killing things and ring the bell before they spawn if you are quick enough. Once you ring the bell the gate will open and that makes it even easier, since passing though that fog gate cancels any invasions even if the boss is already dead.

I helped 25 or 30 people at Iron Keep last night. Anything bad I said about the game before, I take it back. Unbelievably fun.

Some people are organized and make a quick rush to the Smelter Demon. Some people obviously never played the level before but are scared (you can tell because the first set of doors aren't even open). And one dude just wanted help getting to through to the Old Iron King, that was one of the most fun runs (and longest).

So many people died in dumb ways:
opening the blast doors, rushing Smelter when he does his big blast AOE, getting destroyed by the big arrows.

The displeased are almost always more vocal, in lots of places and scenarios.

I'm really happy with how this game turned out! There are some things I would change (
I think the decision to have enemies stop respawning is a terrible choice, basically making it easy mode if you keep dying to a boss. Levels feel kind of disconnected, level pacing feels really mixed and unstructured
), but none of those minor concerns take away from the greatness of the game. It's just that we build up these lofty expectations, so that perfection is expected, it's the baseline; anything less is what gets commented on. I think I prefer Dark 1, but honestly all three games are amazing, and if I ranked them they'd be so close that it'd be negligible.

I don't know why but he was honestly the boss I've spent the most time on in the game...well him and
Smelter Demon
. I'm super squishy though so one wrong move and he flattened me. Really liked the artistic design of the boss though, even if the fight was a little bland.

Listen to this man. I farmed the slug right after getting into the sumbro covenant all the way to 30 just by dropping my sign right outside the previous bonefire. Was sl 103 or something too and got enough souls to go all the way over 120 after that. Now I don't know what to do with those souls. Pump my dex to 40 and use the sun sword, or just keep using the greatsword ive been using and get more hp.

Ahhh, thanks. It seems likely that overlevelling has caused this, but it is weird that the summon rate has changed so much over this farming period (from semi-frequent to nothing in hours). Yes, I am in sunbros and have been wearing the covenant ring and received the medals thusfar. Will try to continue farm in
Harvest Valley
. What is soul memory? Some persistent stat tracking how much souls you have earned in an area?

Yeah, helping people in that area is probably my favorite co-op area so far, even if I had way more failures than successes. One of the best designed areas in the game so far I think.

I must have got lucky with an early crystal lizard drop as I've been rocking a Fire Longsword +5 ever since the first boss I beat (Forest of the Fallen Giants). Since then I've beaten the following bosses:
Dragonrider, Old Dragonslayer, Flexile Sentry, Ruin Sentinels and Skeleton Lords
. Although my weapon has felt sufficient for the areas I've beaten, I feel I haven't progressed my gear in about 15 hours. Where can I get some more large shards easily? Would love to take my sword to +6 and try out some other stuff now that I've invested in DEX like the Falchion and Ricard's Rapier but without being able to take them past +3 none of them come close to my Fire Longsword. I've spoken to the merchant at the start of Harvest Valley but all she's selling at the moment is 10 regular shards

Also, when/where can I improve on the short bow? Don't want to waste upgrade materials on it if I might find something a little better in the near future

Sorry for the bump but this thread moves so fast. Can anyone help with this?
