Joined the bell keepers as I read its a good way to get some quick titanite chunks. Standing in Belfry Sol and I've been invaded twice, killed 1, got nothing and I've invaded no one. I have the ring equipped?
Am I doing something wrong? Found it strange I'm being invaded when I joined the covenant?

Either your SL/Soul Memory is too high or you are having problems with the mp connection. If you don't see any bloodstains for example you most likely have lost the mp connection and have to restart the game.
Also yes, you can be invaded while being Bell bro. I too think that's pretty stupid.
Has anyone solo'd the gargoyles as a melee character? I don't see how its possible because as soon as you have one of em lined up for an attack you got 3 more that beat the shit out of you from behind and sideways. My poor summoned ally died within seconds after stepping out the mist door

That's way too high. There is no chance you get any action in the first area and most likely not even in the second. I would say SL 70-80 for the first bell tower and SL 90-100 for the second get constant invades. Anything above will have downtime.

buy 10 after getting the kings ring and only get infinite at the very end game. Some monsters in the Iron Keep drop them aswell, but as low as 5%. Oh and those large elephant fuckers @ Doors of Pharos aswell.
About your edit: I haven't done it, but I'm 99% sure it's simply the last bonfire before the boss. The one in the cell with a bridge to cross.
Something that would be really useful would be if we were able to switch covenants by using the rings. Like, when you equip one it could ask if you want to pledge your allegiance to that rings covenant. You would still incur the "sin" penalty for switching and they could even have this mechanic cost a set amount of souls since you get the benefit of switching without having to track all the covenant npcs down. 1000 souls to switch.
Except, entering Blighttown the "right" way is the most essential and pure Dark Souls experience there is. I absolutely loved the tension and I feel sorry for anyone who missed that experience on their first playthrough.
It's a shame people missed out on that due to following that "false" popular advice of choosing the master key for your first playthrough.
Now now. Let's not say things we can't take back! I for one do not miss that shit at all. I'd rather circle-strafe all game than deal with that crap again.
Not as dark and haunting? The giants alone are nightmare fuel. The Lost Bastille + The Lost Sinner, the whole D
arklurker
event line, the mystification of the abyss and the Dark, the story of the Milfanitos, the design of the Demon of Song, the end of Undead Crypt are all fantastic things. Maybe I've played Dark Souls too much so nothing from the first game aside from Manus really scares me in any way but you at least have to admit there's plenty of potential here for really creepy stuff once the lore scouts start piecing stuff together.

I get a ton of invasions at SL123 in the second. I'd say 70-80 is the sweet spot though. I don't even have time to take the ring off before I get summoned again sometimes.

Yeah, but that's kind of an "ethereal" place, not an area you want to explore and traverse.
There are other instances as well where the world-design in DS2 makes no sense. Why the hell is the connection between the top of
Earthen Peak
and
Iron Keep
an elevator that goes up? There is absolutely nothing above or behind
Earthen Peak
when you look at it from the outside. I'd call that lazy. Stuff like that really hurts the immersion for me and prevents the game from developing a great sense of place like DkS and even DeS could.
True, but once you jump down there, you have to warp back to a bonfire and start from there if you want to explore further, its the same with Dark Souls 2 in this particular place But yeah, its a boss area compared to a more normal area indeed, that is true (although there isnt exactly that much to explore when jumping down at that place in Dark Souls 2. You might miss a few bodies/items, but nothing too important from what i can remember).
The reason why you cant see
Iron Keep
is because
Earthen Peak (the huge windmill)
is blocking what lies behind. Maybe they could have
illuminated the sky a bit red behind the windmill to get some "mystery" to what could be laying ahead
, but in another way, when you dont see this, it means that its much more a surprise that what lies ahead Its been a while since i played Dark Souls 1, but i cant remember to have seen many upcoming areas to where i was going?
Sorry, i should have mentioned that i ment i regards to what you said about "unrelated standard fantasy bosses and NPCs", that how Dark Souls 1 was so different in this regards to Dark Souls 2.

Do you have a relative low Soul Memory? I had a hard time getting anything done in the second tower when I was there with ~120, mostly because of my overall soul count. Did a shitton of PvP in the first bell tower, at Iron Keep and so on.
has nothing to do with being lazy. It involves more then just travel time as well as the fact that I don't want to watch a bunch of load screens. It would be a simple solution.
Just got blacksteel katana without any item drop increasing equipment. Wasn't trying to get it either, just dropped. Is that lucky? I feel like I read here that it's rare.
Does increasing STR past a certain level give a 2h bonus? i noticed i didn't see one on my claymore but then again i'm only at the required stat level.
Just got to the gutter. This is stupidly hard. Those giant ass dogs hit for so much damage, and have so much HP, and those statues constantly firing at you. I managed to get near the exit and get OHKO'd by a Dark Spirit. Nobody seems to have any trouble with her but me. Fuck this area, it's just not fun.

Well, this is my second large fire, beat her and the Lost Sinner. I originally thought that the key was to move on to the next section, but I was mistaken I guess.
Am I seriously the only person to have this much trouble with the Gutter? I feel like I'm doing something wrong. The dogs are just so stupidly overpowered...

You just need to have patience. Have a torch with you and light every torch you come across. As far as the dogs go, yeah they hurt, but at the same time they are pretty slow. Get your shield out, block their one attack and counter.

You need to either drop into the hole in Majula or go into the crypt leading to Heidi's Tower and have the woman move the switch. If she isn't there talk to her at Heidi's Tower bonfire 4 times

You can see every part of the world you should be able to see in Dark Souls, the world is connected and makes sense. In Dark Souls 2 there are a few vistas like these but generally you just go into a tight tunnel and end up somewhere completely different. The example given above is one of the best, I would love to hear someone try explaining how it makes sense.
Press Y/Triangle at a bonfire to light your torch. There's also a item to activate your torch. Can't think of the name right now, but you should have some.

In something of a reversal, I managed to miss the first bonfire in
The Gutter
with my second character, whereas I managed to miss the second bonfire with my first character. So I've technically been to both bonfires in there at some point, but hell if I could tell you where they are in relation to one another.
For the next game I'm hoping From decides they don't need to
revisit the Valley of Defilement again.
I'm pretty thoroughly ready for them to retire that level archetype.
A few days ago I was helping people with (mid-game boss)
Mytha
and I got a PSN message after a successful victory. The
boss arena was already drained of poison when I entered the game
and it was an easy win. Shortly after returning to my world I got a message saying "
how do u drain poison
" from the person I just helped. I responded, with some confusion, "
You burn the windmill.
" A minute later I get a final response, saying "thx never would have thought of that".
I can't for the life of me comprehend that exchange.
So I've never really liked the whole messaging thing since the game's pretty much premised on transient, silent meetings, and messages like the one you got are part of the reason why. But then I occasionally get one that makes me scratch my head, and it all seems worth it.

In addition to the other advice, be sure to sneak up on the statues and smash them with a melee weapon. They only fire when you are right in front of them, making them easy to take out. If you are careful, you'll be able to get through the area without being poisoned at all.
