Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

Some of these bosses are ridiculous for casters. I'm stuck at the Doors of Pharros boss,
Royal Rat Authority
. The moment I get in, I get jumped on by the damn
rats
and killed right away. I really need an AoE spell for them.

I've managed to kill three of four before they can get to me with a great soul arrow each, and then kill the fourth with a swing of my magic mace.

I definitely think that with the exception of the Ancient Dragon, Dark Souls 2 is mostly easier easier. Also I don't really see there being more traps or stronger enemies. The actual design of a lot of the game was simple enough that I beat a lot of areas and bosses on my first try, which is something I didn't even manage to do in my second runthrough of DaS consistently.

Is it possible you learned a few things from having played the series before? Give yourself some credit, I doubt new players to the series will be doing the latter bosses in "1." That said I still haven't faced anything like
M
anus or
Kala
meat yet, although I ass
ume
I will. Which do you think is easier to solo,
sentinels
or
Oand
S and M? Pretend you were coming in fresh. Pretty hard to choose there I think, very similar fights.

So I have come across a game breaking glitch that others are reporting on the internet.
Drangleic Castle entrance right statue won't open :(

FUCK

The description of AGL clearly says "Boosts ease of evasion" in the game itself. If it truly doesn't effect rolls that's a very poor description. I thought Dark Souls 2 was supposed to get rid of inaccurate descriptions like that.

Raising ADP gives your evasive roll invincibility frames.

I'm SL 103 and still have never been invaded outside of covenant nonsense.

that's because cracked red orbs or either pick up or won in the convenant arena

since there is no normal red orb anymore, invasions are scarce. I was just invaded in iron keep and it was the first "legit" one for days

Just looked it up.

why is this a thing
It's pretty bs in PvP (don't have any qualms with it for those who like it with PvE). I once had 2 go off multiple times at the same time around me when I was doing a sweeping attack with my club, annoying shit.

Only twice for me a in 40 hours.
One guy fell off a bridge in lost Bastille, other guy one shotted me while I was talking to a merchant.
Hope NG+ brings more invasions.

Had a feeling it would be. That's why I chose cleric for my faith build over knight - worst case scenario the stat is useful and I've got some catching up to do, best case I have less points wasted in a pointless stat.

I'm not going to echo the sentiment that adaptability is as useless as resistance, but my soul levels are precious, dammit!

ADP isn't quite that bad.
(Well, agility specifically which you can get through ATT too.)

Just looked it up.

Prevent stun locking. Its actually a great addition.

Poise is pretty much useless in this game. You will get stunlocked by Katana's even at 100 poise iirc and the only way you can get out of it is by high ADP. Having the Sun ring means you don't need in ADP.

Finished the Sh
rine of
A
mada
. At first I was like "wow this looks incredible. And I don't get what's everyone bitching about.". Then the magic attacks happened. Still thought it was great level that demands the players to change the pace. It actually made me really use the torch. Amazing atmosphere too. A bit bummed about the boss. Probably one of the most interesting boss designs in the game, but sadly it was way too easy.

I'm now in the next area, but I need to take a break from the dreariness.
I have to give From kudos though, because it seems the late game levels in this are actually the stand out levels, unlike Dark Souls 1.

Personally i think this is the worst Dark Souls game for pvp because it takes for fucking ever to get some action. They too it way to far anti invasion wise... and poise doing nothing too for pvp too. I though it was a beta glitch or something but that isn't the case. Miyazaki i miss you ;_;

My first Souls game, and I'm 26 hours in, level 76, and I just beat
The Old Sinner. I guess that story-wise places me at that saint's grave place, but I had already seen and lost to the boss at The Gulch
. As for my guy, I'm running a strength focused knight, using the Dragonrider Shield and a +5 flamesword that I picked up in that lizard cave. I also used phantoms on two of the 7ish bosses I've beaten and grinded as a phantom 5-6 times, but I haven't cheated or done TOO much looking up outside of basic mechanics. The game is really fun, and I'm happy with my progress so far.

Some observations based on my limited experience:

1) Is it just me, or is this game really linear? I mean that more in like a Pokemon style way than in a bad way, but it seems like the game is funneling you through one main path. There's tons of stuff on the side and multiple ways to go down that path a la Pokemon, but I'm a bit surprised by how straightforward the game is for an action-RPG.

2) For all of the talk about how fucking difficult and hardcore this series is, and while the game gets tough and downright cruel occasionally, I'm also surprised at how not-insurmountable this game is. IMO. Anyone with reasonable ARPG experience and the patience to get through 10 hours of learning the ropes could probably deal with this and beat it eventually. I hear DSII is at least somewhat easier than DaS, which is in itself easier than DeS, so maybe this game is the exception. I honestly love how this game can be both really accessible and have a nice bite to it at the same time.

3) This game is insanely addictive. Like, 8 hours played today like nothing.

Ummmm, WTF just happened? I walked into Belfry Sol to do some invasions since I'm in the Bellkeeper covenant, and lo and behold I get invaded by other players of the Bellkeeper covenant.

WHAT

Thx... but how many times did you kill him?

I just spent the last hour and a half famring him, I've killed him like 20 times and he has dropped items twice (one time the legs and one time the chest).

I'm using the jesters cap and something serpent ring +1 to get higher drop chance :S

35 times and got his helm, chest, and legs.

Man I wonder what From what thinking with the first bonfire in S
inner's Rise. Whenever you teleport there or just spawn to the bonfire, you have like 3 crossbow dude aggro on you immediately. It's a pain in NG+ when they actually kinda hurt >.>
.

First thing I did there was just farm them to extinction.

WHAT

The game doesn't care if you're in the Bellkeeper covenant. If you enter one of the areas there is a chance you'll get invaded. If you want to invade you should wait outside somewhere.

Camera control on the right stick has some kind of x-axis acceleration or something, and it's pretty annoying...

If you're in the bellkeeper areas you're fresh meat no matter what. If you want to invade, stay away from that area.

Complete opposite for me. There are constantly lots of different areas to progress in and all of them have multiple paths and secrets.

I've been killed at the same time I killed the world owner by it. Thing is annoying shit, however it does give a slight warning before the explosion happens, except I have yet to recognize the warning as a pre-explosion tell in any of my fights so far. Just enough people use the ring to be annoying, but not enough use it that I look out for the tell.

Out of all the things in PvP that ring is one of the least infuriating.

The
Demon of Song
was the most bizarre boss thus far. Absolutely amazing idea for a boss. I wonder where From get there inspiration from.

It's actually super non-linear but some of the other paths are non-obvious; I got to 40+ hours in before I only had one area I *had* to clear in order to make story progress, after I'd already done the other three old souls and a bunch of optional areas. Before that I had always had at least two or more areas I could tackle.

How is it that I've been invading people for hours, most of them ending with me successfully eliminating the invaded, but I haven't gotten a single hate message? Only thing I've gotten was when I spawned right next to someone and immediately rolled from above into quick sand, with the message being "lol."

Oh, and I had gotten a message with subject "leave covenant now" saying "go join the buleboys wit dat pussy running" after a duel, but that's just funny.

This came as a surprise to me as I invaded people ALL night yesterday and was never invaded by other players.

At Bellfry Luna? Were you, by chance around the bonfire or in the room down the ladder?

You can't be invaded in those areas, you have cross the bridge into the Bellfry to be invaded.

I've been finding the levels themselves to be fairly linear but the actual the choice of which levels to do first and the order in which to kill bosses very non-linear.

Just beaten the final boss for the first time. It's definitely my favorite entry in the series. Next up is the 1000G. A big thank you to all you kind phantoms that helped me out along the way, wherever you may be.

I once got a message saying my character boobs were pretty.... lol.

I turned off messages from strangers after that

For the record, I don't mean linear in a bad way. I just mean in a Pokemon style way (DSII is obviously way less linear, but the comparison is fair).

So upset that since this is my last semester of graduate school, I bought the Black Armor Edition, played for 1 hour, and haven't had anytime since the game came out to play it.

Gotta ask the GAF community, how is everyone liking the game? I like what I have seen, but I've barely scratched the surface.

Side note: I was talking with one of my fellow students about the game, (I got him into Dark Souls) and he was thinking how awesome it would be if there was ever to be a "current/futuristic" rpg/action/shooter that was made by FromSoft that would be like Dark Souls. What do you guys think about the possibility of that?

I'd say some leves are quite open. There's often an objective you have to complete to open them up but once you do, they feel more like a small maze than a corridor.

Iron Keep is a good example. You can open up the furnace and skip the Smelter Demon or fight Smelter and get access to another bonfire.
Plus there's the optional short cut that you can open up.
Then after Smelter, there's two different routes leading to the Old Iron King.

I'd compare it to the level design of 1-1 from Demon's Souls. There's a couple branching paths that lead to dead ends and one route to finish the level. Along the way there's a couple shortcuts you can activate that open the level up.
