What will Nintendo do at E3 2014?

Iwata said, in the investors minutes, that the value of the GamePad needs to be shown, didn't he? So can we expect an E3 that gives particular attention to this? I would expect Zelda U and X to be the games (that we know of) most likely to make good use of it. So maybe they will get front billing. Or maybe there's an incoming asymmetric multiplayer that we don't know of yet.

And speaking of the unknowns, the last two Nintendo games I bought (DKC:TF and SM3DW) weren't announced this time last year, so I've got hope for a nice surprise, or two. Even if we have known about several games for over a year now.

Honestly I feel like everyone who hated that it was a direct was either
1. A Nintendo hater who looks for any reason to piss on the company
2. A fanboy desperate to explain why it didn't do well

because the fact that it was done as a direct really didn't have any impact on anything (Other than confusing idiots who looked at a few headlines and never actually read the articles)

I still don't see how the experience would be that different to x and y, except better chat options with strangers I guess
Unshackle your imagination for the limitation of a portable like the 3DS. I know it's wishful thinking, Nintendo probably doesn't have the resources nor the guts to do something so ambitious.

But new IP don't sell at all compare to "an old and beaten-up IP"

it doesn't take much to sell more than Metroid. many new IPs from other companies sell way better.

the issue here is that Nintendo's new IP track record is spotty when it comes to sales and risk. they seem to only try new things as downloadable eshop games.

I dont expect many new nintendo games so i hope se will see more colaborations like that pokken and other possible stuff.

If the rumor about devils third is real, it would be nice too

Again, explain what really differs from an mmo in X Y besides chat options with strangers and that you don't physically see them on the top screen. You could still battle, trade and interact with random players whenever you wanted and tools were in place to even make rematches and such easier

I think what Nintendo will do will disappoint a decent amount of people but still manage to surprise us. I'm expecting them to spend a decent amount of time on QoL, which likely won't interest us very much but I expect it to surprise the general public.

Other than that, I'm guessing info on games we already know about, including ones we haven't seen in a while like Yarn Yoshi and SMTxFE (in addition to games like Smash and X). They'll end the presentation with a Zelda Wii U trailer.

Aaaaand Nintendo confirming that they're dropping the Wii U, 3DS and everything else to go 100% arcade.

So are you guys saying "nothing" serious, trolling or doing a "expect nothing and be surprised if they do stuff" kinda thing?

It's not very clear.

We'll get Smash, Zelda, X and Bayonetta. We'll get a few new 3DS and Wii U announcements but nothing spectacular. Nintendo will then show a closed-door preview of their QOL stuff for a full reveal next year. Nintendo I believe will let Smash and the big U titles come out and then slowly phase out the Wii U in favor of what's next. By that time the 3DS will have had a solid lifetime.

Fully rendered 3D environment, proper scale, visually displayed real time battle (instead of choosing commands on a menu, you would shout commands while the fight was happening dynamically, like a real trainer) , huge world, simulated Pokemon ecosystem, player driven economy, improved breading system, etc.

The franchise would probably need to be re-imagined for it to allow for all necessary changes.

We have no idea what Nintendo is going to do, even moreso then in years past, so even the stupidest predictions are as realistic as the well thought out ones. We know that Zelda's coming, but apart from that, we have no idea what could be revealed.

A few years ago I would have put more thought into what Nintendo might announce, but this year I really have no idea.

the casual audience that isn't buying the Wii U is the one that they would reach with E3.
i realized that when i heard some casual fans that thought Nintendo had cancelled their E3 press conference because they weren't making games anymore. i told them about how they still announced stuff with the Directs but they looked at me like i was talking in another language.

only the really hardcore audience is aware of the Directs and those were going to buy the console anyway even with the bad sales. Directs were fine as a complement but they should have never replaced their E3 conference. the damage from not having a show at E3 2013 was worse than the benefit all the Nintendo directs did last year combined.

The reason this isn't true is because media coverage has evolved and all major outlets will report on announcements regardless of e3 presence.

It's honestly a mixture of all of the above lol.

I personally think they will come with some pretty nice stuff. I expect nothing earth shattering, but then again, it would be foolish to have that kind of expectation going in.

There was also the fact that last year was hyping up 2 next gen consoles. Nintendo would have got the least exposure even if they'd showed up to the Kodak, in my opinion.

They have't used Kodak in years. Although they did show up to Nokia Theatre the morning before the E3 show opened. Except we never got a live stream of it.

Not really convinced that this is even possible even on pcs, let alone wii u. At least not the huge simulated eco system parts. And if we did get something even remotely similar, don't expect it to have anywhere near all the pokemon anytime near the start given the insane amount that exist, and the sheer variety of moves. This just doesn't seem realistic (and would ultimately just be a spinoff). Not to mention the only team at Nintendo that even has any familiarity with anything resembling mmo type battle systems is Monolith Soft (see Xenoblade, X) and they're busy with X

Thanks for the correction.

You're right, though - Nintendo did do three presentations, the E3 Direct, the press briefing, and the business meeting.

The same thing they do every year... Try to take over the world.

I don't know, Brain. How is a tie wearing monkey going to improve my quality of life?

Whatever they do, I'm predicting disappointment from the lapsed fans. Either from working on a IP "no one" wants (Intelligent Systems is working on Fucking 1080) or from the fact that long running series are, in fact, still running.

Also NSMB3. Prepare yourselves for the inevitable, everyone.

Yes, I know its unlikely, but its entirely possible, most of what I described you can find in MMOs or games like DayZ already. When I say simulated I mean convincingly integrated with the world, wild Pokemon would interact with each other, they would spawn at places that made sense, NPC would lock themselves inside a building if a wild powerful Pokemon showed up, creating an opportunity for player to team up and capture it, etc.

  • Hyrule Warriors with a U tease if we are very lucky and the E3 bear treats us.
  • Yarn Yoshi
  • Pokken
  • Next mainline pokemon game
  • QoL
  • Bayonetta 2 with release date
  • Smash with release date
  • X with full reveal and a soft date
  • Previously unannounced 3DS title
  • Sonic Boom
  • Indie reel, maybe a quick announcement of a sequel to an indie game that did well
  • *mystery bonus* we bought/we are publishing/wiiu is now receiving *insert critically acclaimed and/or major upcoming game, or studio, here*

Obviously we'll get a new Mario game, that's a given. But most likely they'll show off the new Zelda U. As well as more info on Hyrule Warriors. All I want, seriously ALL I WANT from Nintendo this E3 is Metroid.

I don't know what exactly Nintendo will show at E3, but it will probly be interesting. I expect to see stuff that I will be interested in, anyways. And that's about as far as expectations go for me.

But put me in the camp with people wondering why it would actually make any difference whether they have a live show or a Direct. People acting like they weren't even there last year just come off as so uninformed, I guess.
They were there. They had plenty of stuff to demo. Live show or not makes no difference as far as I'm concerned.

It would still cost a tremendous amount of time and money to do what you're describing. The are 718 pokemon right now, 721 if we include the three unreleased event legends, and even more once we take into account form changes and mega evos. To give all of these unique animations, attacks, etc that don't look like ass (which is a lot more necessary in an action setting. You can pull the standardized attack animations right now only because its turn based and so it doesn't matter much from a gameplay perspective). So we would need to cut a shit ton right from the start. And since all pokemon, with the possible exception of legendaries, should be playable, you'd need to build an insane amount of detail into each one. It wouldn't be comparable to a normal mmo where you have many different types of monsters, but most only need a handful of actions and many are just palette swaps of others in the first place. And for what you described, you'd need to code interactions and behaviors for pretty much all of them. All this from a studio that hasn't done anything remotely close. it isn't happening. Period

And that's ignoring things like how to deal with server costs and adding more content (which would be a necessity since people aren't going to be happy if they don't at least try to add all the current pokemon in by some point)

All I can say is whatever they decide on doing (Direct or actual press show), they had better make sure it actually streams seamlessly this time. Last year was an absolute clusterfuck of not being able to even see what they were actually saying, so I couldn't really enjoy any announcements they might have made regardless of whether they were "good" or not.

They'll announce that the NNID's are no longer locked to consoles and the end user is free to log into any Nintendo system out there. They've been hinting at this for the past year.

A new Zelda will be announced that uses a new "overclock" mode on the Wii U. It will push visuals that's on par with XB1. It will come with an "intercoooler" like fan that will clip on the back of the system to help keep it cool. The fan will be USB controlled and will be required for the overclock mode.

I was only thinking about the original 150, there are to many Pokemon now and most of them have terribly poor design. The series chose the easy way of increasing numbers instead of increasing the quality of what was already there. There is an incredible untapped potential in this series.

Another lame direct. Can't wait to see Zelda though. Other than that I'm not expecting any new announcements of the games I'd like to see from them. Hope I'm wrong.

For what it's worth, they have an extra booth/meeting room this year: 4822, OFMR 5244 and OFMR 5644.The floor plans haven't been made available yet, so I can't check where 5644 is. But that's at least something (maybe they'll use it to show QOL to key attendees/partners). Their presence at E3 is somewhat bigger than last year.

I believe they will have a press conference this year. Last year's Nintendo Direct broadcast did not work out well, the stream quality was very poor. I think they will present a megaton or two. Not necessarily in the term of games (Shenmue III, Eternal Darkness etc.), but in the term that people will be talking like crazy about it. I mean, they've gotta do something unless they want an angry mob of investors biting their ankles.

I doubt you'd be able to fit even the original 150 properly anytime soon. And there are tons of great pokemon past the originals (and tons of shitty pokemon among the originals for that matter) once you take off the nostalgia goggles. Each pokemon would almost have to be like an individual mmo class to be anywhere near satisfying. Even with tons of overlap, that's still a shit load of classes

I'm so hyped for Zelda that I don't really care about the rest of the anoucements, but it would be nice if it were something like the 2013 january direct, that one was really good.

Posted my predictions in another thread, slightly updated:

Wii U

New games:

-Zelda will be there. I'm hoping it's a trailer, but wouldn't be surprised if they just bring some concept art for this year. It'll be a late 2015 game.

They were close to showing Zelda last E3, they're not going to finally show it and use concept art.

I think like a few other posters think that they will do a Nintendo Direct and skip the whole conference, and if they do have a conference they really need to impress especially with the WiiU .

Just not sure how they can downplay what has been quite a difficult year for the WiiU and I hope they come to their senses and actually releases games that people want to play.

I'll be happy to just see Zelda for Wii U. I don't expect a lot of new game announcements for the system outside of that though. I'm sure they've already shifted the direction of a lot of games that were in development to the next Nintendo console.

I hope they show something interesting for the 3ds.

In my personal opinion the current 2014 lineup is woefully lacking compared to the past 2 years. Part of that I think is the fact that Yoshi wasn't very good, and rumors are Kirby isn't looking that hot either.

Need some stuff on the caliber of ALBW, FE, Luigi's Mansion, AC, Pokemon etc... to come from Nintendo. Doubly so if they plan on riding the system out until 2016.

and rumors are Kirby isn't looking that hot either.

Kirby is fantastic. Solid 60fps, excellent 3D (maybe the best I've experienced on the system), fun mechanics, puzzles, level designs, awesome music. It really surprised me. Where did you hear it wasn't good?

EDIT: I mean, it's a straight-up traditional Kirby game. It's not "innovative", like maybe Canvas Curse was, but it is fun. The biggest disappointment is that, maybe, the Kirby Fighters mini-game has no online mode.

Fossil Fighters is the disappointing title; Vivosaur numbers are cut & no Super Revival.

  • Zelda U Reveal Trailer. 2015
  • Smash New Trailer. Holiday 2014
  • Hyrule Warriors New Trailer. Fall 2014
  • Yarn Yoshi New Trailer. Fall 2014
  • X New Trailer. Early 2015.
  • Bayonetta 2 New Trailer. Fall 2014
  • Miyamoto's new IP Reveal.

  • A surprise.

Not expecting much else.

We got 3D World last year & NSMBU the year before that. I don't think we're getting a Mario platformer on the Wii U for a while.

  • Zelda U Reveal Trailer. 2015
  • Smash New Trailer. Holiday 2014
  • Hyrule Warriors New Trailer. Fall 2014
  • Yarn Yoshi New Trailer. Fall 2014
  • X New Trailer. Early 2015.
  • Bayonetta 2 New Trailer. Fall 2014
  • Miyamoto's new IP Reveal.
  • NFC Something Reveal.
  • Majora's Mask 3D Reveal Trailer. Holiday 2014

If I recall correctly, Bayonetta 2 is due for a Japanese release this summer. I'm guessing this means we're getting it either late this summer or early this fall.
As for X, although I sincerely hope it make it this year, I have a gut feeling that it'll get pushed to next year somehow. Plus, there's also SMTxFE that we're overdue for some info on.

Last time they truly won, was entirely based on their floor presence, not conference based at all.

By using the Direct and Floor combo, they can better control the communication with the larger buying public, and overall purpose of the show. Focusing on the conference never did them good.

Last decade they only won the conference war in 2004.

I thought that was their usual stuff.

I think they'll do a stage show again. Last year seemed like a big enough mistake that even they should get it through their thick skulls.

So they'll open with something big but expected. Presumably Smash. Probably show off a few new characters, do a live demo and give a release date, presumably November.

Then they'll touch on the recently released stuff on Wii U and 3DS, in particular Mario Kart U.

Then they'll do a bunch of 3DS stuff... as always, the handheld stuff will largely be met with this weird combination of excitement and eagerness to get past it. I'm not too sure what's coming out of 3DS this year, but they'll talk about upcoming indie/eshop games and have one surprise reveal for it. Maybe a new Pikmin or something like that.

Moving back into Wii U, they'll show off SMTxFE, but won't mention a release date. Probably not releasing this year anyway.

Then Yarn Yoshi will get some loving. After that they'll launch into a quick demo reel sort of thing detailing future Wii U titles that aren't announced.

Then they'll move on to Bayonetta and give it a release date. Probably September or October.

After that they'll give X a real name, story details but no release date as it ain't coming out this year.

Then they'll show more of the Hyrule Warriors Zelda game. Give it a release date of "this year" and release it in either October or, more likely, push it back to early 2015 eventually.

The penultimate reveal will be the new Zelda for Wii U. I have no idea what to expect from it, though.

Then they'll do one last surprise reveal... MAYBE Retro working on Metroid... but there won't be much to show beyond like a little video teaser and some juiced up alpha footage. In all likelihood, it'll be kind of a disappointing end of the show regardless of what it is.

And there you go. That's your standard Nintendo E3 show: Big, expected opening, portable stuff, a bunch of other console games in between, a huge penultimate reveal and a big but slightly disappointing finale.
