Even after ~50 hrs I still can't seem to get the hang of the lock-on behavior. Sometimes my swing goes where I expect and then sometimes I fly off into a crazy angle and I don't know why. The only consistent way I've found to always hit the spot I'm locked onto is to take both thumbs off the control sticks before attacking.

You aim in the direction you're pushing the analog stick now, which wasn't the case in DS1 when you were locked on

Ok, long post of stuff I built up over the weekend.

Question about KV:

I just defeated Velstadt this morning and walk down the hallway to find a very sad looking King Vendrick. I didn't have much time before work, and I have read many times accidentally that KV is an optional boss, so I'm assuming he won't aggro if I walk in since I need to get the king's ring. I see the item on the corpse behind him and wonder if that's it? I was in human form and sitting on 80K souls so I didn't want to just rush into a situation that I didn't properly have time for.

So basically, will he aggro?

Trophy Questions for those who have finished the game or are interested in trophies

I want to try and get as many trophies as possible on my PS3 playthru, but plan on switching to PC permanently once that version comes out, so I know it's not realistic for me to get all of the trophies. I know that hexes, pyromancy and miracles are out of the question, but I want to get as many as I can.

Is it possible to learn all gestures on the first play thru? I have almost 2 rows of them.

I need to discover the covenants of the bloodthirsty and the ancient. I'm assuming I just haven't made it there yet.

Light all the fires on the map in majula. I think it's just killing all the bosses or is it lighting all the bonfires?

Inheriting equipment:

I think I read somewhere that Benahrt and Lucatiel just require themselves to be summoned for 3 successful boss fights, and that using a bonfire ascetic for the same boss counts towards this. Is that correct?

How does it work for the laddersmith, Captain Drummond, and Blacksmith mcduff?

Last question, I have a lot of people in majula now but haven't got the trophy for increasing the population. How many people do you need?

KV won't bother you as long you don't attack. Ascetics on the same boss do work for the npc story lines. Majula map fires are based off boss kill one including the very last boss. Not sure about the rest.

Yep, join or leave at any time. No issues.

Bell Covenant is fun. Though slightly annoying at times when people literally sit on top of you when you spawn.

O it's annoying for you? Really now? This game is absolutely idiotic with those sections (thankfully both are short). Nothing like getting to an area you haven't been, thinking you are hollow and thus, safe, and getting invaded. Then a respawn to immediately get invaded again, but only this time by TWO people. People have said you can't get invaded twice in a row, but I've found that to be utter bullshit.

For the last one.. I just got this trophy on another playthrough less than halfway through the game, so I definitely don't have everyone.

The Pyro lady, ore lady, blacksmith, haggard merchant, laddersmith, the cartogropher are back at Majula. I don't remember if the spell merchant from the Wharf came back to Majula or not

Holy crap Amana was one of the most frustrating experiences ever for me with my STR build and no ranged fighting options. I basically had to keep killing everything until it stopped respawning. not fun at all.

I have a plus 7 ultra great sword but some runs it al.most breaks. Really unsure of which str based boss weapons are worth it, any suggestions? I only have the first boss weapon seller available.

Right now I have the
giant rat giant spider and chariot bosses
available to try next

Hmm, maybe he does because I didn't go back and talk to him after fighting the boss and i have everyone else you mentioned.

Okay, *deep breath*

First off, you CAN learn all gestures in one playthrough. Google a guide if you are having trouble.

Same with the covenants. Bloodthirsty is tricky (not really) because
you have to kill one person using a cracked red eye orb to join. You get a token for doing so.

Lighting all the fires means
killing all the major bosses including the final boss. Speak to Cale in the mansion afterward until the trophy pops.

You are correct on inheriting equipment.
Benhart and Lucatiel are the only ones you inherit via summon for bosses. For Laddersmith Gilligan, buy his most expensive ladder (12,500) then talk to him. For Drummond, defeat the Giant Lord then talk to him (you also get a gesture from him, the last one you'll likely need). For McDuff, spend around 14000 souls buying stuff from him then speak to him.

For the Majula achievment, you need the following NPC's:
Carhillon (mage teacher in No Man's Wharf and 8 INT). Laddersmith Gilligan (Earthen Peak). Woman that sells stones at the beginning of Harvest Field. Rosabeth (pyromancy teacher at the beginning of the Shaded Woods, need a branch of Yore to unfreeze her; also, DON'T PULL THE LEVER or she might die from the ensuing ambush). Merchant Hag at the second bonfire in Forest of Lost Giants. Finally, Cartographer Cale who is in a cave in the Forest of Lost Giants between the second bonfire and the very first Pursuer encounter mid-level. So six total; exhaust all dialogue with each one to get them to move back to Majula.

Essentially,
All achievements are possible in one playthrough. Learning all spells is do-able via Bonfire Ascetics (which bump the game to NG+) for that area but the tricky ones come from doing covenant rank ups. Chancellor Wellager in Drangleic Castle sells these spells in NG++ alternatively if you don't want to kill hundreds of people online in one playthrough.

Hope this helps!

You aim in the direction you're pushing the analog stick now, which wasn't the case in DS1 when you were locked on

iirc, the large slow weapons could be re-aimed in ds1

The painful difference now seems to be that instead of hitting attack and then aiming it with the stick, if you are tilting the stick when you press attack, that attack will go in that direction. you have to press the attack while neutral and then let it get into the second stage of the animation while neutral to take advantage of targetting. Its a pain in the ass. I liked it in ds1 where it only seemed to see where i was aiming it when it hit the second half of the attack animation.

The point of re-aiming, at least for me, is to anticipate lag stabs and rolls, or to try and hit 2 enemies at once. pretty effective too.

Edit:
in ds2, you can even re-aim the jump attacks, which is hilarious. I doubt a lot of folks I've invaded expected to be hit after side rolling, but 90 jump twist with a great club is... fun.

So, there are no Faith/Int scaling weapons ? But instead Lightning weapons scale with Faith right ? So if I infuse lightning to weapons they'll scale with faith ?

I have a plus 7 ultra great sword but some runs it al.most breaks. Really unsure of which str based boss weapons are worth it, any suggestions? I only have the first boss weapon seller available.

Big fan of the Smelter Sword. It's probably outclassed by normal +10 STR weapons, but it's a lot of fun to use and it looks cool.

so leveling up in the rat covenant is pretty slow, i summon a guy every 10 minutes it seems :( At this rate its gonna be a long time before i get the ring that disables notifications. Also firestorm is pretty damn powerful you can almost stun lock people.

Only true for the heaviest weapon classes I believe. Awesome change since switching attack direction on the fly makes up for its lack of speed-- it's saved me a bunch of times when I got surrounded. Another cool change is you can run in any direction while locked on, too. I don't remember this being the case in previous games, but it's nice to be able to run full speed while not having to constantly change the camera to keep the enemy in view.

Asked this last night, but don't think I got an answer: Is there a place to farm for Petrified Dragon Bones?

One fairly effective way I found to do that is use a bonfire ascetic in
Dragon Aerie. The dragons I believe have a guaranteed drop for Petrified Dragon Bones, and it will also respawn all of the crystal lizards, all of which have a chance to drop it as well.

Ok, thanks. I have a feeling that won't be fun starting this on NG+ though, lol

Gotta upgrade that Curved Dragon Greatsword though ;_;

Btw: For the joining of Bloodthirsty covenant, you actually don't need to invade anyone or even go online. You get the item needed, same as for invading, within a chest.
at the very very bottom of the huge hole in Majura

Yup, glad they did that. I don't care about invading anyone. You can also find a Token of Fidelity in a chest as well. They knew not everyone would play online.

Rosabeth dying after I had already gotten killed by the poison guys was pretty damn evil. There's no way for me to even level up my pyro flame without her?

I got to say that getting new weapons kinda sucks in this game because they are guaranteed to be worse than what you already have. You have to get everything you need to upgrade them and even then your not always sure that the weapon will be better than the peak level sword your using.

Do red summon signs essentially summon an invader to voluntarily fight? No reason not to do it if it's near the bonfire and you're already hollow right? If you win, souls. If you lose, carry on as you would any other death?

Pretty much. I'm curious if it counts for a blue sentinel victory though....

You can get the guy in No Man's Wharf, Carhillion of the Fold, to join Majula. You need 10 intelligence for him to speak with you though.

Sorcery guy in the warf (who eventually moves to Majula) will do it also.

My BF nearly took her out when the poison guys came out - thankfully he didn't. Now that I know that can happen, I make a point to reload the area to get her to move.

So I started over, trying to play around with magic this time.

With staffs, am I understanding correctly that the only important stat is cast speed, or does the magic bonus power up my spells in any way?

For Pyromancy, the normal hand will scale with my Int, correct? Will the Dark hand scale better with if I'm always fully hollowed?

Are there any particular spells I should check out? So far I've been using mainly Dark Fog and Great Heavy Soul Arrows (plus Dark Orb and various Soul Arrow levels to kill fodder). Affinity and Dark Hail (and sometimes Darkstorm) seem alright for punishing bosses, but not very general purpose.

Doing a challenge mode dual rapier build for fun. This is melting some bosses so damn fast.

I used to use dual falchions but switched to dual rapiers and I love them. It's a good moveset for a build that has to constantly dodge and it does some pretty good damage.

So I got an extra cast of Flame Swathe by invading
Belfry Sol
and picking up an item there, no doubt dropped by one of the
dwarf enemies
. I know as a phantom or invader you sometimes pick up lifegems, so I thought that's what it was. Talk about lucky, haha. Even better, this happened on my mage build.

Never had to worry about smelter. Summoned two people and nuked him from afar with lightning. I actually
never knew he is "hard"
lol, didn't get hit once.
Duh?

So I think can fight the final boss and beat the game now, but I'm gonna try and go to the extra areas I haven't been to (think there's only 2?), go back through the world and see if I missed anything.

Also, about King Vendrick...
.when I saw him brainlessly dragging his sword around and the music there kicked in, I got chills.
You know what it reminded me of, for some reason?
Pyramid Head.
Anyone else, or am I crazy?

I don't think summoning 2 guys makes them "casuls". It's just more fun with more people. Aren't bosses supposed to get harder the more guys you summon?
Yes and no. It depends on the boss. They get more health, but their attention is massively divided, giving you ample time to retreat and heal, for instance. But for some bosses this doesn't work because their attack patterns are AOE-based and will likely get everyone at once anyway, so it just gives the boss more health. The Ancient D
ragon
is a good example of a boss that's no doubt much harder in coop than solo. His AOE has massive range and dividing his attention won't make him easier.

That said I wouldn't call anyone a "casul" either, but it's true that coop on most (not all) bosses make the fight really trivial.

15 times. do you know how long 15 times is? 15 boss tries alone. the despawn doesn't really change anything.
It kinda does. Retried Sm
elter
often enough that the run to him was suddenly empty. Same with the A
ncient
D
ragon
, and the mobs before him are actually pretty hard (those golden knights, argh).

What boss was it for? I've only had that happen to me when dropping my sign in front of the U
dead
C
crypt
boss, but I'm not sure it was necessarily trolling as much as people trying to summon for
Vendrick
.
Can you not summon/coop for
Vendrick?

It has been known for quite some time now that you can still be invaded while Hollow. If you ever thought you were ever safe, you were simply wrong. ;)

I find it weird that a Ricard's Rapier dropped for me from an enemy. Thought it was a unique weapon from that chest.

Rosabeth dying after I had already gotten killed by the poison guys was pretty damn evil. There's no way for me to even level up my pyro flame without her?
Carhillion
, found in NM'sW, also upgrades it, but you need 10 int or he thinks you're too dumb and won't talk to you. Otherwise exhaust his dialogue to make sure he relocates to Majula.

So I started over, trying to play around with magic this time.

With staffs, am I understanding correctly that the only important stat is cast speed, or does the magic bonus power up my spells in any way?
It does. My sorcerer staff is at +9 and deals decent damage even with Great Soul Arrow.

For Pyromancy, the normal hand will scale with my Int, correct? Will the Dark hand scale better with if I'm always fully hollowed?
Slightly yes, to the first, and I believe yes to the second question (otherwise what's the point).

Sounds good. I'd suggest Combustion for close-range desperate hits, and Flame Swathe as your go-to nuke in case you have big enemies with lots of HP after you. In the place where you find the pyro trainer
Rosabeth, I had no good crowd-control sorcery and you get ganked by those poison ogres and that basilisk and I was in trouble, then I panick-cast Flame Swathe and the whole place went boom. Very satisfying. :D Also saved my ass when I was attacked by two big ogres with clubs in Earthen Peak, soul arrows would take too long to kill them (unless they're alone then I can just back away), again Flame Swathe saved me. So I consider it my emergency nuke. :)

Just got to Dragon Aerie, really is awesome looking... and then
5 crystal lizards
?!!!!

Is it just me or is the Mace overpowered in this game? I feel like I'm doing major damage and it's only +3

It is quite OP, makes the Cleric a great starting class - Especially for Heides Tower.

Can you not summon/coop for
Vendrick?

I doubt it. You can't put a summon sign inside
the Velstadt boss room and putting one outside of it will only summon you for Velstadt. If the host tries to go through the Velstadt fog door (which always appears regardless of whether the host has killed the boss or not) and they've already beaten him, it'll just kick you out.
