What will Nintendo do at E3 2014?

Iwata:

Well, If John Harker is to be believed(and his tag is certainly a good point to start), then we should expect a Direct this year too...

edit:Last year, when did Nintendo firstly reveal their E3 plans?

At the end of April.

If nothing else, we will know after E3 whether Nintendo plans to try one more time with the Wii U, or give up on it entirely.

Regardless of how great X and Zelda Wii U are, they will be of that I'm certain, I think this will be a key take away from this years E3 for Nintendo. They can still show great games but the tone and direction for the future will be key. At the moment I think the last batch of games announced will be it and they'll stretch them as best they reasonable can. If they can't be bothered to invest in actual marketing for the system I don't see them investing millions more in a new set of games for the Wii U.

That is an excellent point. For how long have we been hearing about this expansion procedure?A year, maybe more..The thing is that we haven't yet seen something concrete coming out of this expansion. At least, some b-tier games, could have come out, in order to fill up this horrendous lineup or its lack of..

Because a game, especially a Nintendo one with the care and polish they put into it, takes over a year to develop.

On stage presentation.

Zelda U
Smash 4 newcomers (including Pac-Man)
X full reveal, story trailer, title etc
NFC stuff
Animal Crossing U
Majora's Mask 3D
Metroid 3DS sidescroller

This...actually seems pretty reasonable. Aside from the Metroid 3DS title, that is.

I can't imagine E3 passing this year without Nintendo showing *something* from Zelda U (not the musou)

LOL what?

Do you seriously believe that? That's not the case at all.

I feel if that was too subtle that's perhaps an indication of the quality of the thread. Yes, it's outrageous but it's practically pieced together from other posts.

I find this idea that Nintendo is not working on games to be rather absurd but people in this very thread believe it. I'm not sure why but they do. I guess I'm trying to explore the mindset.

I undestand fully what you are saying, but at a certain point and I think that this point has been reached, some compromises need to be made, especially when you consider the scarcity of games.
For example, a version of Super Mario Strikers HD with some decent online functioning. Why would you need the extra time to polish it?Or some Gamecube HD ports?

Thanx Effect. At the same time, this year, we will be getting this: Apr. 25, 2013, Fiscal Year Financial Results Briefing.
It will be very interesting, to say the least, to see their targets for the next financial year.

Why must you do this to yourself?
Nintendo doesn't love us that much.

What do you mean? Metroid and MM3D may be questionable, but the others aside from Animal Crossing U are almost guaranteed. And there's a good chance Animal Crossing U gets announced too, since the plaza expires toward the end of this year

I've no idea...but then I'm not stating as a fact that the E3 Direct got more or less viewers than the press conference usually does.

If people are claiming it as fact it had less viewers......then people should back that up with figures....rather that just making things up to suit whatever they believe.

What I do know is a pre-recorded Nintendo Direct was available in multiple languages at the same time.....meaning it had a larger potential live audience worldwide that could instantly view and understand it.

The idea that the Nintendo Direct had more viewers than the E3 Presentations is a laughable claim in itself, and the ease with which Nintendo could have carried out both compounds this.

Yea their booths were awesome!
I thought their whole road apperances were done well in 2013.

I really don't think them doing a Nintendo Direct instead of a conference is that big of a deal.
I mean, I've been to over 10 of these E3 jams. I thought leading up to E3 last year it sounded bad they weren't doing one, but at the end of the day - they probably get more coverage with an ND anyway. And they launched the playable demos and kicked off the best buy kiosk program immediately after, I'd argue that was a more impactful deal than just having closed demos at their booth.

That said, I dunno if they are doing a press conference or not this year...
I just know where they aren't doing one.

Do you have "insider info" on the subject ? :).

I still believe Wii U can have a solid showing this generation. With continued price drops they need to continue to have unique titles that differentiate from Microsoft and Sony.

Ultimately, Wii U will probably end up being like Dreamcast. A brighter legacy after the fact in spite of less than ideal contemporary performance.

Is E3 the place to announce a price cut?

I think they might drop it by $50 around the time Mario Kart 8 launches, so a bit before E3. If not then, around the holiday season with Smash Bros.

I think Iwata has said they don't really think they'll be able to cut price this fiscal year.

I didn't think e3 meant a whole lot to nintendo.....thats why they do Nintendo Directs. better question is what they'll announce during the ND before e3.

Sit in a corner and cry. There will be no hype train this year and you know it. :P

First, this is impossible, since the hype train is already being repaired (took some heavy damage from the last ND) as we speak and will be fully functional in a couple of month.

Other than that, I expect Nintendo to show & announce games. I don't have any particular expectations outside the normal (and crazy) wishes every Nintendo fan has. Of course, we always want them to announce EVERYTHING and blow peoples minds, yet somehow we forget what we already have/know.

I personally am quite happy that I already got 1 out of my 4 most anticipated retail releases this year, DKC:TF, with Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2 and Smash 4 following. Then I already have a backlog of some awesome 3DS games I plan to play as well as probably 10 highly intriguing indie games on my radar (of which I already backed 2).

In other words, If Nintendo manages to show a couple "suprises" at this years E3, then I'd be more then set and satisfied.

Eventhough I'm not gonna be able to resist the hype a couple of days before the conference OR special E3 ND - whatever it will be -, I will definitely know what to "realistically" expect, with a good chunck of me - of course - hoping for more.

Likely a Direct. They have nothing that will stand up to the VR madness of this years E3.

This gen is lost they need to release their new platform ASAP, likely next year. It needs to be more powerful than PS4 even if slightly, ready to go with VR, and maybe a QOL thing or two to differentiate. WiiU is dead, don't waste energy trying to revive it.

I could somewhat rationalize E3's lack of press conference last year due to the PS4 XBone hype, but they desperately need a presser this year. Even if its all QOL info, just let the masses know you are still a relevant player in the industry. At the very least, a keynote accomplishes that.

I get the sense they're going to be limping through E3 this year. There will be a couple of decent announcements to keep it from being a complete embarrassment, but its going to be another year or two before they have their business in enough in order for anybody to say that Nintendo "won" E3 again.

I could see them doing another direct, saving the return to the stage for when they have a stronger slate of announcements to hype. We'll definitely get our first look at Zelda U. Aonuma has confirmed as much. We'll probably also see a few hype-worthy Smash newcomers. I'm not expecting much beyond that, though.

If you look at where are on the timeline compared to the Wii's lifecycle, this is the Wii Music year.

I just think they will look so inferior if they try to go up against the VR experience. They are in a tough spot.

i hope it's a good thing to have the zelda tech demo fresh in the memory. i think the style may be a little less realistic, but if the detail and lighting, the general atmosphere is on that level, we'll be onto something really good.

If they do a Direct, at least don't do it with just Iwata in front of a white wall, like last time.

Make it special. And watchable, for God's sake.

Viewers that had to be interested in what Nintendo was showing already and go to their website to view it. As far as mass market was concerned Nintendo was never at E3 and they still dont know what the hell a Wii U is or why they should buy it.

Wonder how people would try to rationalize Nintendo making a good move if they dropped even Nintendo Directs.

"Well see if they stopped then it would give Iwata more time in the office to get work done and advertising for marketshare is pointless anyways"

I don't think they'll talk about QoL at all, because it appears to not be a gaming platform at all and E3 would therefore be the wrong venue. I think they might tease or even announce their future platform, starting with the handheld. They might sell it as another "3rd pillar", considering I don't expect any backwards compatibility.

I'd hope so, but they also said Miyamoto is producing flagship ,,software'' for QOL right now, so it might not be as out of place. Wii Fit was at E3 too...

But it's the fact that FPSs are dominating the market, not the fact that Nintendo doesn't even bother to show/try to show they're relevant anymore.

Come on Nintendo! Market the shit out of SSBU! Surprise in a conference to the masses, not just the hardcore fans that are going to buy your games regardless!

Hopefully they can produce SSBU without going in the red for production costs.

They will though. Nintendo USA has no voice here to just go out and announce a thing in a non-gaming atmosphere. Seeing as Nintendo is seeking the 'deep blue American workout ocean", they'll most certainly use E3 as a medium to market it.

They'll show off a fitness app that vaguely represents a game, tell their consumers they're listening to their wants, and call it quits there. And Nintendo will be ridiculed for it.

I wouldn't care about that as long as it's WATCHABLE. They need to find a streaming service that can handle their Nintendo Directs, let alone a potential E3 Direct. The amount of people tuning in live once they start is just so big that it literally breaks the stream. I have very fast internet, but I've had huge problems watching the last few NDs, with many people experiencing the same problems in the chats.

Last time (Little Mac reveal) they had a Youtube stream that was working pretty much flawlessly while Ustream was having a hard time.

Maybe, maybe not. I think people have a very wrong idea of what's going on at Nintendo.
