Facebook has acquired Oculus VR for 2 Billion US Dollars

Yes what happen to that?

Kickstarter is pretty damn clear that your "donation" doesn't entitle you to a share or any interest in the company or its product. The people who gave $300 already got their dev kits. That's the end of the relationship.

Save us Morpheus.

Actually, I think I'm more mad that they only paid 2 billion for Oculus VR when they bought a shitty app for 19 billion earlier this year.

I refuse to believe nobody's posted this yet in the thread but I'm doing it anyway:

I honestly thought the thread title was a troll when I first saw it.

Fuck. Zero interest in Oculus now.

But that's how you run a start up, you gotta know when to sell. Good for them.

Welcome to Farmville VR.

God.. the freak outs are so dumb. Oculus just got a boat-load of cash handed to them to make VR get better and at a faster rate. Give over with pointless meltdowns. Give over I say!

Basically he probably saw it as 2 options: Possibly change gaming forever and maybe make a lot of money in the future, or take 2 billion now. Probably most people would take the money.

From what Palmer said, Oculus will become even better, they now have the clout to set the standard for the future of VR gaming.

This isn't a good thing for Sony, they do not have the clout to back Morpheous the way Facebook will.

Just in what way can Facebook support Oculus? Do you happen to believe that the kind of people who care about facebook will care about some VR bs?

LOL at the over reaction of people on this board. So ridiculous.

Oculus will now be able to release the Rift faster, with better quality and potentially at a better price to reach mass consumption. This wil have no impact on the gaming side as the drivers will still be released to handle games and whatever else Facebook has in store.

If anything this puts Sony in a bad position as the rift will be a mainstream product that everyone will be aware of and potentially buy compared to Sony's niche gaming market.

Interesting.

I in no way see how this is as bad as everyone is making it out to be. If Facebook leaves Oculus to keep doing what they're doing (which it looks like they are) then it should be fine. Oculus are just gunna have a shit ton more resources behind them.

It's not like they're going to make the Rift require a facebook account. I mean Instagram is owned by Facebook and even that doesn't require a Facebook account. Forcing you to use your Facebook account for Instagram makes waaaaay more sense than forcing you to use it for the Rift.

Samsung to buy Nintendo to tomorrow and integrate Mario & Co to their TVs and Cellphones.

I have the feels

In all seriousness this may be grand news for Sony. This has the potential to put VR on the map in a more casual way than ever previously expected. That's good.

Then let Sony be the ones to make it awesome and the gamers dream while Facebook makes it acceptable to the masses.

I still don't see why that makes it a win for Sony.

Because if FB fuck up Oculus in anyway (changing direction away from gaming, cheaper parts, rushing development etc) then that would make Oculus the lesser product and make people look towards alternatives, like Sony's Morpheus, which from what people have said is about on par with current Crystal Cove occulus.

so come 2015 I get to choose between a giant megacorporation knee deep in nefarious exploitative practices to bring me a full fat VR experience and a second giant megacorporation knee deep in debt whose VR solution will anchor me to their underpowered proprietary crap box.

it's not the morpheus itself that's the problem. if facebook take a steamy dump in the creativity pool, i hope sony realise their solution has application beyond flogging rapidly ageing consoles.

I don't care what the head of Ovulus says or the head of Facebook. Of course they will say they won't change direction and just be better at doing what they are doing now. They all say that whether they change or don't.

At this point we will have to wait and see what happens. See what changes occur to the product and the company itself. Whether they will go for cheaper materials and less accuracy in spacial tracking to maximise profits for daddy Zucks or whether he really does want the best of the best in VR gaming and is willing to spend to make that happen.

Will also need to see if anyone jumps ship after this and goes to Sony or Valve to play about with their VR things.

We'll just have to wait now but it's always good to expect the worst in situations like this so you won't end up disappointed if a change in direction occurs.
I'd say Oculus is safe for the next year at least. FB knows they can't scare away the passionate people pushing the development before they have a successful product, or else they'll have wasted $2bn.

The question is what exactly will be this "future" you speak of. Because I don't trust Facebook for fucking shit.

Wow, this comes as a shock! I'm not pleased or disappointed, either way. I just hope that the Oculus guys get the funding they need to create the device they always wanted to create.

A sincere good luck to them!

Remember when Zynga just gave Words With Friends a buttload of money? Man, that worked out awesomely! Or how about all those develoeprs EA and Activision gave a buttload of money to? Yeah boy

Or just play games on a regular display like everyone else.

This is fucking terrible news.

Any corporation handling this will be a nightmare as they have to answer to stockholders, not consumers.

This needs to be owned by a private organization that can take the necessary risks to develop this into the hardware it needs to be.

Yeah what about the kickstarter backers? They give money to this project to get it going, then the makers of the product just sell it to someone else for 2,000,000,000 and laugh their way to the bank while the kickstarters now have 0 say in what is going on from now on?

Man ...

That is pretty low. I dunno. New territory.

Wow, this thread is like KNEEJERK APOCALYPSE.
