I am trying figure out what the blurred boxes could mean. Three of four are blurred.

Oh, well spotted, I'd missed that. I can't find a way to make that fit with Slave Zero, so unless it's a photoshop error, it's not Slave Zero.

That said, I can't think of anything else it could be right now, so maybe photoshop error is a factor :-)

Link to these boxes?

Wow, I am glad to see Retro City Rampage receiving continuous updates. They are also current on GOG.

We have uploaded the latest version of Retro City Rampage to your game shelves. Please download at your earliest convenience the new installer ( setup_retro_city_rampage_2.11.0.27.exe ) in order to get version 1.19 of the game.

• The music jukebox will now continue playing even if you switch to
other applications.

• ADDED MUSIC JUKEBOX
- Listen to 148 of the game's tracks, almost 3 hours in total.

• PRISON STEALTH MISSION
- The last guard now stops looking once you're a reasonable distance away.

Escape Goat 2 just released, not a whole lot to add other than I had to double check and see that yes, Escape Goat 1 is also on GOG from a while back.

Huh... weird to see it added in the middle of the day.

I played through Escape Goat 1 about a month ago. It's actually a really solid puzzler. I'll definitely be picking this one up, and from the screenshots, I think the visual style in the sequel is a lot more palatable.

It is the latest enigmatic hint. Basically a hint for a upcoming game.

Looking at it again, top-right is blurrier than the others, too. Bottom-left is clear, top-right is extremely blurry, the other two are somewhere in between.

I still think Slave Zero, but the blurriness is intriguing.

Edit: Also, they're not quite the same image each time. Each is slightly translated from the rest.

Phew, just spotted and caught the Theme Park classic gem promo at the absolute last minute.

And now today:

Slave Zero ($5.99)

(Also the official release of Ether One)

Edit: Maybe not the official release of Ether One? There's a banner up, but it's 404ing.

Edit2: It's up now.

Oh man just tried out Mean Streets. NOTHANKYOU.JPEG
That game is just far too old for me to play and actually enjoy. I had no clue it was old old school DOS. Tex Murphy 2 i'm fine with though so i'll just play that. Which doesn't seem to be a issue since that seems to be considered the actual start of the series.

It's Slave Zero. I'm not disappointed.

Edit: aaaaand bought. I remember this game being once of the first to have bump mapping in it, and it required a Matrox Mystique to get all that, I think. Or at least, it was kinda the poster child for that card. Anyway, I'm in the middle of Shadow Warrior right now, but I'll dive into this once I'm done with that. Only took me 14 years.

Can't run Slave Zero fullscreen. It just stays there in a small box, can't find a way to change it. I must be really dumb, but am I missing something here?

[EDIT] Contacted support, seems it cannot run in fullscreen on Windows 8. :(

Teslagrad has went on sale, half off for anyone after it. I played the demo and thought it was a really nifty little game, but I have too much to play :(

Are there any rumblings about a D&D (forgotten realms) bundle any time soon? (I ask since I wanted to buy BG and Icewind dale series altogether).

They run sales constantly. I can't remember how long ago the last one was but it definitely will be on sale before summer or maybe even a special deal during a summer promotion.

Thanks mate. I am looking to download BG1 + 2, Icewind Dale 1+ 2 & Planescape Torment. It seems waiting for a bundle is a wiser choice in contrast to spending $50 outright.

One indie, one preorder

Unholy Heights ($4)

I've seen this mentioned in a few places as a borderline tower-defense genre-breaking simulation. Kind of. Sounds interesting, and seems to have earned a few enthusiastic comments around here. Wonder if this means other Japanese indies might be on the way; we already have La Mulana, of course.

I think it also may have the honour of being the cheapest (non-sale) game on GoG.

Moebius ($30 normally, $24 preorder)

This is the graphic adventure Kickstarted with Jane Jensen's Pinkerton Road Kickstarter from two years ago. I funded it at the time, but I've been steering clear of the betas to go in fresh at launch. That said, I believe I've picked up that the production values are pretty ropey but the gameplay is solid.

Unholy Heights is fun for 2-3 hours, then gets repetitive really fast. It's one of the better mobile games but those don't really hold up on the PC.

How long will the pre-order be? I won't get my pay check til next week =P

"Approximately April 15th". I don't think the release is completely set in stone, but that's the expected date.

Edit: Oh, looks like the first couple of chapters are available to download now if you purchase it (Makes sense, those are the ones that would have already been through significant betatesting). Mind you, it's described as a 'demo' but I think it's more early access, since I can't see a way to get them without paying.

Interplay sale on. Some good games in this one, too, quite a few having had the recommended treatment here; Descent, Freespace, MDK (Nice timing, Minsc!), Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Kingpin, Sacrifice.

I have, though I wouldn't recommend it without the nostalgia. I loved it when it came out, though I played chess a whole lot more back then as well to be fair. It's basically just chess, running at VGA/SVGA resolutions in DOSBox, with little else going for it. The animations are amusing for the first time or two, unless you're a kid perhaps, then you may not mind seeing them the 30th or 40th time as much... but I'd probably pass on it.

Anyone got any impressions/memories of the Screamer racers and Subwar? Also, please tell me if Redneck Rampage is worth it, I want an alternative Build-engine FPS fix.

Anyone got any impressions/memories of the Screamer racers

I have both Screamer games. They are fun to boot up and play occasionally for nostalgia reasons, but neither has aged particularly well. Screamer 1 is Ridge Racer-esque and Screamer 2 is more Sega Rally. GoG has included some nice Glide-wrapper style functionality into Screamer 2 so you can crank up the resolution to modern standards.

The big problem is control. It just doesn't have the feel of a good RR or Sega racer and so after I've gone through the tracks a couple times I'm ready to play something else.

Lord, if an arcade racer can't even feel as good as Ridge Racer (lol), it better have something else up its sleeve to be worth something. Going to pass on these for now, the videos I've just looked up don't seem promising. I'd rather play Re-Volt instead.

I have a Mac, so no Freespace 2 for me (I'm assuming I can't convert the DOSBox file to Boxer), but Freespace + expansion sounds fun.

You should play Freespace + expansion in the Freespace 2 / Open engine via Freespace Port though, then you'd get a much nicer experience. Freespace 2 should work by extension of Freespace Open working. See here I guess?

Freespace Open is by far the way to go for playing Freespace 1 or 2. And make sure you have all the graphical modules installed / enabled... it's a common mistake to just start playing without enabling them lol. There's guides in the GOG forums on how to set up FSO, I'd probably try following one of those along with a set of good mac instructions.

Ok, thanks for the impression. I'll skip it for now. Maybe I can get it even cheaper in the future. I defintely won't be playing it anytime soon so it is safe to skip for now.

I have a question... I already own Freespace 2 on GOG. Does this mean that thanks to Freespace Open I don't need to buy Freespace 1?

Technically, it does not seem like you need the files from Freespace 1, just Freespace 2 to install FSO, which FSP requires. Legally, I'm not entirely clear on the matter. I mean Interplay is selling the game on GOG, so it does seem odd they'd do that with all the big green arrows the community points towards FSP... I tried reading up on it a little, and I saw FS1/FS2 was released as open source (or perhaps had the source released... maybe not open source), but I'm not clear to what extent. Really, for me, I will just buy FS1 (well, if I hadn't already, I bought it from GOG a while ago) and use FSP, then I know I'm in the clear. Maybe it's not necessary, but it's only a few bucks, so at least this way I don't have to worry about pirating something unintentionally.

Yeah, I just decided to buy it anyway using this very line of thinking.

Yeah, Screamer 1 is kind of like Ridge Racer, while Screamer 2 is much more Sega Rally. The series did continue after that, but those games aren't on GOG, and at least in the US weren't nearly as popular as the first two; I remember the first two, but not the later ones. I've never played Screamer Rally or Screamer 4x4. I do have the first two games, though, which are the two GOG has.

Screamer 1 is definitely kind of dated. It's a decently okay game if you like mid '90s racing games, but don't pay more than a few dollars for it; wait for a sale for sure. The graphics aren't great, though; this is an early 3d title with somewhat ugly visuals. The tracks have that mid '90s style that has not aged well, too. The controls, while okay, could be better, but it is an okay game and does have some merit, for the time at least. The music's not bad (if the music in the GOG version is the original?), and the gameplay can be fun. It's simple, but can be fun. Also, at least it has more tracks than Ridge Racer, for sure! Six versus 1.5, big improvement in that at least. Screamer 1 isn't the best game for sure, but it's from a transitional time in the genre. If you want a quality game sort of like this maybe pick up Whiplash, but that's not quite the same; it's got somewhat crazier track designs... and it's not on GOG apparently. Too bad there! As dated as its graphics are, I like Whiplash.

Anyway, Screamer 2 is a big improvement over the first one overall. First, the graphics are much better. Screamer 2 still looks kind of nice, either in software mode or 3DFX (if GOG supports that, not sure; I have both games on disc). The biggest issue this time is getting used to the controls. Screamer 2 is Sega Rally now, and is maybe even SKIDDIER than the Sega Rally games somehow. The incredibly slippery controls take a lot of getting used to, and I don't know if I would call them good... but if you put some time into it, there is a pretty good game here. With good music, good graphics, nice variety between the tracks, and some fun gameplay once (or if ) you manage to start figuring out the controls, I would recommend Screamer 2. Maybe wait for one of the frequent sales though. But it's definitely worth playing for anyone who likes Sega Rally-style games. You just need to stick with it a bit -- don't give up, it is worth it!

Six games added this week, and since there's some valuable back and forth from me listing the ones that don't make the cut, I'll be doing that as well.

Speaking of games that didn't make the cut, that brings us to the first game on the list, SiN Gold, thanks to Dragoon En Regalia's help it went from not quite having enough impressions to get listed, to on the list. :) SiN's biggest flaw perhaps was launching right around the same time as Half-Life (well ok, it was probably the numerous, awful bugs at release), but it definitely leaves a positive impression with people. Has that classic FPS feel to it, where you're encouraged to mess around and find stuff out on your own. Since then, it's reappeared in a new episodic format that hasn't made its way to GOG, and just like the Half-Life series, it didn't quite work out the way people hoped.

Then we have Shadow Warrior (2013 remake) / Shadow Warrior Classic Complete. The remake actually seems to stand out better to people than the original, with Flying Wild Hog doing an amazing job, bringing that classic feel, while vastly improving on their prior FPS, Hard Reset. Really, people who absolutely loathed Hard Reset, end up quite liking Shadow Warrior 2013. Sword fighting gets mentioned most often as being the best thing about the game. The classic Shadow Warrior games don't have quite as much feedback, so they get the warning, but are generally viewed positively. The combination of the humor and running on the Build engine work to its favor, and present a unique FPS experience.

Escape Goat is next, and from the sounds of it, is another I'll be adding to my wish list (which is the down side to doing this comprehensive searching). Probably the best regarded game out of this week's bunch. Pretty much radioactive-like glowing positive impressions from anyone who plays it, commenting how perfectly it nails that old-school genesis feeling (but bringing innovative and constantly changing gameplay) and the outstanding music as well. Even has Feep's stamp of approval, what more could you want?

Lastly, the two Tropico entries on GOG. Both carry warnings, really just for the repetition found over the series; Tropic 4 is often said to be too much like Tropico 3, and Tropico 3 is too much like Tropic 1 (aside from 1 being 2D and 3/4/5 being 3D). So, more of a fair warning. The Tropico games (except for 2 and 5) all come highly regarded in the sim genre, often compared to The Sims, but said to be more fun, the type of games you easily lose track of time in.

Then for the games that didn't make the cut: Unholy Heights (quickly becomes repetitive, few impressions), Slave Zero (not enough impressions), Escape Goat 2 (will revisit later for more impressions), Ether One (will revisit later for more impressions). Well, that's everything. Feedback is always appreciated to get more games on the list if you have a favorite not there. :)

Slave Zero seems like Expendable..or One...or Wild 9, or any straightforward action game from the late'90s that wasn't MDK and thus got overlooked. Even SiN has more presence on GAF. :(

Does Escape Goat use saves or does it play more like an arcade game in structure (based around no continues)? I'm fine with the former if the game's Solomon's Key-levels of hard.

It tanked on release and got pretty bad scores across the board, so it's not too shocking, even for a Dreamcast/PC title. '99 was a packed year. It was fun, but not particularly memorable, whereas, say, Sin was fun, but also ridiculously (comically even) broken upon release, and had a sequel several years later on Source engine.
