I hope every character gets an alternate suit like Wario got, not just different colors. Considering that Wii Fit Trainer will have the male version as well as the female version, I think it's likely that this will occur.
 
There seems to be much debate surrounding the possible appearances and nonappearances of certain characters in Smash 4 as I can see from all the Smash threads. (Yes, I've read all 6 threads in their entirety) I think a few people have already done this but I am going to go over several characters that people seem to constantly bring up. Some mentioned here are probably guaranteed but I go over them anyway. The following speculation is my opinion, not fact. (Although I would like it to be)

I know that some of you have brought up this whiteboard.

I personally think every Brawl veteran on this whiteboard will remain in Smash 4 for obvious reasons. I mean, why put them on there in 2012 if they won't be in?

The original 12 will always be in Smash, even Jigglypuff.

In order of likelihood: Will, Probably, Might.

Wario - He's going to be in. Ashley is already represented in Smash 4 and why have her without the representative that first appeared in Brawl.

Sheik - She will be in. Sheik has been in 2 Smash games already. Although maybe the Phantom is Zelda's down-B and Sheik is separate, we just don't know. That might happen for both Zelda and Samus, their transformations might become separate characters.

Zero Suit Samus - She will be in. We've already seen the Zero Laser and it remains to be seen if Samus will transform or if ZSS will be standalone.

Meta Knight - He will be in. Meta Knight was in the Brawl E3 trailer. He was revealed befoer Dedede I think in brawl. Why have Dedede in Smash 4 but not Meta Knight? He will most likely be nerfed. (lol)

Falco + Wolf - Both will probably be in. Fox and Falco have been in for a while, it might be easy to port characters from Brawl. Wolf is rather difficult to explain for his possible inclusion.

Pokemon Trainer - He will probably be in. Personally I believe they will have Pokemon Trainer then a Hoenn or Kalos Trainer. Charizard is very iconic and Game Freak has made him shine with Mega Evolutions.

Lucas - He will be in. Nintendo has made recent efforts to make the Mother series relevant outside Japan. Earthbound finally came out in Europe. They even made a Miiverse community for Mother news...which hasn't been active in a while. GBA games are finally going to be on Wii U and I think they will put Mother 3 on it in English by E3. Lucas will probably be revealed next month as Mother 3 came out in April. It would be weird for him to be shown before Ness, however.

Ike - He will probably be in. Fire Emblem has become more popular in the West these past few years. (Despite that I've only played Sacred Stones) Some might question his possible inclusion in Smash 4, but I believe Sakurai said he wants no cuts fro Brawl. I do find it odd that Roy wasn't in Brawl even though he's in the files I think. I hope Ike and Roy will both be in Smash 4.

R.O.B. - He will probably be in. Nintendo's popularity in the start of their venture into video games started with the NES which had R.O.B. bundled. He's here to stay.


Now for some characters that haven't been playable.

Mii + Pacman - They will both be in. These 2 have actually just been discussed so I don't need to make a case for them. We all know the "rumor" which will eventually be proven true. No one guesses Wii Fit Trainer.

Palutena - She will be in. Kid Icarus has been revived and it was showcased in the Smash 4 reveal. All the franchises in the reveal have more than one character in Smash except for KI. We also have a "leak" that occurred a while ago that might further prove Palutena to be in Smash 4. Sakurai even mentioned how great it is to have a lot of women in Smash 4. Not to mention that stage with her statue.

Ridley - He will probably be in. Hoo boy... We all know Sakurai is a gigantic troll with this one. In an old Nintendo Power (RIP in peace) Sakurai mentioned he could be in the game but "he'd have to be a little slow, is that okay? (laughs)" It's time Metroid had another rep, and in fact villains are featured in the 3DS eShop, including Ridley. Wily is there too...why is that relevant? Mega Man is in Smash. Oddly enough it's Ridley's NES sprite but it makes sense because clicking the banner leads to the original Metroid.

Takamaru - He might be in. I'm sure we all know that in Nintendo Land there's a minigame with this franchise. (I have no idea about this franchise much) Just like with Sakurai putting Pit in Brawl, I think Nintendo is trying to make more games in his series. I believe there's also a trademark for a VC game, I'm not sure on that one. Sakurai is known for putting "retro" characters in Smash including Ice Climbers, G&W, and R.O.B. So Takamaru might fit the bill for this in Smash 4.


And one more:

Mewtwo - He might be in. Game Freak has included 2 Mega Evolutions for Mewtwo in XY. I think Sakurai might want to put Mewtwo back in Smash 4 after a long hiatus. We haven't seen anything relating to Mega Evolution in Smash 4 so maybe it could be his Final Smash.


EDIT: Of course I forgot someone.

Snake - He will probably be in. If Sonic can make it in, so can he. Some might argue that Snake only has a few games on Nintendo platforms unlike Sonic who has a lot. (Twin Snakes, MGS3D) But Kojima is good friends with Sakurai, and I just don't see him being cut. A lot of people seem to believe Snake was a one time deal as people thought with Sonic, but I don't think that's the case.

Huh, I'd forgotten about that. The fact they trademarked it so long ago and yet nothing has come of it is odd.

Maybe they'll reveal Takamaru in a direct and then announce Mysterious Murasame Castle on the eShop RIGHT NOW to warm up the western audience to him.

Edit: and just to clarify, it wasn't just a trademark, the game was RATED by the Australian Classification Board.
 
I've been reading the Archie Mega Man comic series for a while now. I really enjoy them. The huge crossover event with Sonic was good as well. Now they are starting a Mega Man X/Classic Mega Man storyline.

It was very good reading. I agreed with all of your comments and I sincerely hope that we would get all brawl characters.

Many people speculated that we are getting Isaac for April's Nintendo Direct. I really want that to happens but I seriously doubt that it would happens anyway.
 
There's two Brawl characters I don't mind losing if I had to choose. One is Wolf, and the other is a Ike, providing he got swapped for a different fire emblem character. I really want everyone else to stay, including Snake and R.O.B.

We seriously debated about that old leak again? How could anyone think Wii Fit Trainer was obvious? Most rosters I see people post follow the same patterns and almost no one is creative anymore. No way was she obvious.

It bugged the hell out of me that people were butthurt as long as they were.

She sure wasn't a safe choice, but after she got in and I thought about it for a bit, it makes absolute sense that she's here. Nintendo changed quite a bit last gen and Wii Fit is a big franchise to Nintendo. She's a Nintendo All-Star just as much as the other characters are.

Still shocks me we had this conversation today though. She's the most left field thing I've ever seen announced in Smash next to Snake.

I don't think anyone would disagree with you that Wii Fit Trainer is a Nintendo All Star, or Wii Fit itself as well. I don't think people are being butthurt about Wii Fit Trainer right now. People were argued about how safe or unsafe Wii Fit Trainer is before E3 reveals.

I think people should behave better since there are few people mentioned the argument we just had in other forums. Come on, we were suppose to set the examples for other forums. ;P

I like the way you think. The only thing I have to add is that it wouldn't be weird if Lucas was revealed before Ness. Remember that's exactly what happened during Brawl's development, which cued the Ness death wagon.

Also I just want to say Roy was probably cut due to Sonic. The only obvious cut with no intention of being brought back I'd say is Pichu. The fact that Roy, Mewtwo and the others were actually being worked on gives me confidence that Sakurai didn't just look at all the old characters and start singling those guys out from the beginning. He intended for Roy and Mewtwo to be back along with a few new faces but Sega's last minute ok for Sonic caused things to get flipped upside down.

Oh and Ridley will be in the game as a full on playable character. The time is now and man will he shock the community in a way that not even Sonic or Snake could!

Now about Wii Fit Trainer being predictable or a logical guess. Hindsight really is 20/20 but even if she was predicted, before the reveal of this game the thought of Wii Fit Trainer might have been as laughable as the Villager because for all we knew at the time, Wii Fit didn't lend it's self the violent nature of Smash Bros. I mean that was the direct reason we got no Animal Crossing rep in Brawl and for any logical thinker the same would have applied to Wii Fit Trainer. Anyone saying otherwise is just spouting BS.

I really hope cuts are left to a minimum (if any) for Brawl to 4. The cuts for Melee to Brawl made sense. Roy, Pichu and Dr. Mario were more or less clones although I'd argue that Roy was on the same level as Falco for 'Clone that's different enough to justify existence' (Although Mewtwo's departure was a bit upsetting). I just don't see those same types of characters in Brawl's roster, so here's keeping my hopes up for #nocuts
 
I admitted that I never read old comics from BITF, so I decided to start to reading all of the comics. This one was just perfect. You can't really play Sonic vs Mario or Snake vs Mario.

From what I've heard from reading up on the game, The Mysterious Murasame Castle had shared a lot of gameplay mechanics from the NES The Legend of Zelda, so I'm curious to see if people would actually warm-up to the game. That is, if it will ever be released in North America and Europe.
 
I honestly kind of think we'll get 50 characters. 35 (possibly 34 if Snakes cut), 10/11 total newcomers, and the 5 cut from Brawl, not counting alts/transformations (remember, Dixie and Toon Sheik/Tetra would've likely been alts/transformations). The reasoning for this is simple: 50's an important number to hit. Sakurai would likely want to include as many characters as possible, but also have fun designing movesets. The 5 that were cute likely already had a lot of work done on them (especially considering 3 of them are from Melee), so they wouldn't neccessarily need as much design work. So they probably wouldn't take as much time to think up and put in the game. The other 10, however, would allow for them to have fun designing movesets and such. Also, as for balancing representation, this would keep things even, with Pokemon, Zelda, and Mario all getting one character through the deleted Brawl files, and one new character. But this is just my personal opinion, and there's not much that can be done to prove (or disprove) that it will happen.

Oh, and sidenote that doesn't really have to do with the above, but since people always insist on it: Pra_Mai is not Plusle & Minun, they would've had seperate files, and none of the other names are abbreviated this much (I believe Diddy or Dixie might not have Kong in their filenames, but that's not nearly as much as of abbreviation as Pra_Mai is.
 
I just watched the new gero blaster trailer, and it reminded me of how a couple of years ago i was convinced the cave story robot and travis would make it into the next smash ... how times have changed.

Man, the Sonic reveal is still my most hyped gaming moment ever. The first thing I set out to do in Brawl was to unlock him, just so me and my brother could have that Mario vs Sonic match.

Do Nana and Popo have seperate files?

Unlike Ice Climbers and the hypothetical Plusle and Minun, Diddy and Dixie would most likely have had different movesets.

It's easier to believe that they would cleverly recycle Pichu's model+animations into a tag team.

Yeah, Popo and Nana both have separate character files in Brawl.

People insist on it because it's most likely true. "Pra and Mai" is a common shorthand for Plusle and Minun in Japan, and since Pichu is the only missing Melee veteran, it makes sense that they would replace it. We don't know how far into development the two were, if at all -- the lack of separate files means nothing.

Gotta source for where Pra and Mai are common shorthand for Plusle and Minun? I've never seen anyone come up with a source that actually proves this before.

There are lots of Japanese blog posts casually referring to Plusle and Minun as "Pra" and "Mai," but if you want a more visual example, go to Google.co.jp's image search and put in "プラ マイ" ("Pra Mai"). Lots of Plusle and Minun pictures turn up. It would be one hell of a coincidence that in a game featuring Nintendo mascots there's an empty character ID slot that just so happens to be named after two of Ruby/Sapphire's most merchandised Pokémon. There are literally zero plausible alternatives for that file name. To me, "Pra Mai" is as obviously Plusle and Minun as "Dixie" is Dixie Kong.

Pra and Mai are supposedly the abbreviations for the Japanese names of Plusle and Minun, not the English names.

Pretty much this. The character might not have gotten much further than the concept stage. If development got further the file may have been renamed to "Plusle" and have a seperate "Minun" file made.

Did You Know is notoriously erroneous. Their videos are fun to watch, but they seem to do very little fact checking. They claimed Meowth, Pit, and Peach were planned for SSB64 despite zero evidence existing to back that up.

The "every player" garbage was started years ago by someone with absolutely no knowledge of the Japanese language, and it continued to persist because Plusle and Minun are generally unpopular characters. There are no documented instances of "pra mai" being used to refer to "every player." It's a completely nonsensical combination of words in any context other than Plusle and Minun.
