It isn't, not at all. There's a strong chance it's fake. It is a stretch, however, to insinuate that it's clearly, blatantly, and undeniably fake when the most thorough investigations of these pics come up inconclusive.

What's there to investigate if it's an original hoax? There's nothing to conclude if there's nothing it's based on but original sources.
 
Can we talk about what potential use Streetpass/Play Coins can have on the 3DS version of the game?

For Streetpass, something akin to ALBW or MK7 would be great where you collect the profiles of other users and take them on, but I wouldn't put it past Sakurai to be more creative than that.

As for Play Coins, I'll hazard a guess that the trophy minigame from Melee will make it's return and that the coins can be spent there. Or maybe you'll be able to purchase items for your customizable whatever-it-ends-up-being

I really hope that the Play Coins aren't used for the same feature as coins were in Melee. I liked the slot machine, but the 3DS does not give you enough coins to justify a system like that.
 
I've no idea what to expect for this picture of the day. Lately, they've all been new info, but I am surprised by how long it's been since a veteran reveal. There's been a lot more info on the 3DS version too!
 
Sakurai is going to show us a picture that contains nothing new, and you all know it. Then on Tuesday he'll show of Ridley as an assist trophy.
And when he returns home from work on Tuesday, he'll look at his calendar and think "Oh, crap, it was April Fools day yesterday. I should have done something special with the Pic of the Day".

True. Admittedly that was just the first ide that popped into my mind so I wrote it down. Thinking back to KI:U, isn't this what the play coins were pretty much used for?
 
Sakurai should show a picture on the Pyrosphere of something new, like an assist trophy. But noticably, in the background of the picture, should be a shadow that is obviously either Charizard or Ridley, but incredibly hard to tell which one. It'd be so god damn evil.

1. Path of least resistance doesn't work because there's more elements that go into play than just the acquisition of the pictures for something under NDA like this. It's not as simple as saying "some guy in Japan took pictures of a game in development" doesn't work because there's too many other factors going on.
2. Palutena's face is noticably off in the hoaxes compared to other KI:U characters. Pit and Phopshora are faithful recreations of their KI:U artwork, Palutena is not.
3. Mario in the picture has bizarre inconsistencies with his outline. Pedantic sure, but it's inconsistent in thickness and shade compared to even Palutena in the same image.

Proof? Of course not, I'm not developing the game or have any hand in it at all. I can say that should be far too much inconsistency in the image based on what we've seen or known to say without reasonable doubt that they can be real.

Either way this is one of those conversations that devolves into a circlejerk. BGBW posted a lot of insightful material on the subject before that ought to cast significant doubt on the subject, but that gets willfully ignored for these silly hashtag crusades. But whatever, I'll eat crow if it's real and stay mum on it if it's not. I'm just really tired of that dumb hashtag.

You forgot to mention that Palutena's shield in the "leak" lacks the strap that the original model has.

I think those images are fake as well, but I can't shake the feeling that she'll be playable in the game anyway

Actually, Japan tried to pull an April Fool's Day prank back in 1903. The prank involved telling the Americans they weren't celebrating the day. They thought it was hilarious, but the humor was lost in translation and haven't had the heart to correct themselves since.
