Why do I see so many people using the dragonslayer greatbow rather than the long bow? Is it only to be able to use great arrows? Because it seems the long bow deals more damage with a strong DEX build but I don't know.

I messed up, guys.

I got the game the other day, and started playing. Got to Majula, and never actually saw the pathway
near the bonfire to get to the Forest of the Giants
. Instead, I went to
Heidel Tower
. Died, a TON of times (though I did take out that first big guy enough times to make him stop respawning), and now I'm down to 50% health. A friend came on the chat, laughed at me, and directed me to the "right' place.

Should I use an effigy at this point? I hear there are only several in the game. Also, if I DO use it, and then I die again, does HP start trickling down incrementally again, or does it bring me all the way back down to 50%, since I'd been there before??

I just run through as fast as possible, there is a route you can take where you won't get stuck or attacked. Right before the boss door use a moss and flask then enter immediately as the enemies follow. I tried the slow route but it is the only area in the game I can run through without getting fucked up.

What route is that? How do you get past the snake guys fast, don't they pop out and kill you??

Duke's Freja
is absolutely destroying me

When I keep my distance, the beam kills me, when I get close, the stamps and trash mob kill me :(

No shortcut, correct?

edit: Did a little better just there, keep getting delayed on the way to the
inactive head
by running into
legs and spiders

I think beam is always from left to right, or atleast thats what she did with me, so I just forced her to do the beam then sprint to her right till the inactive head. Rinse and repeat.

Dont worry, you will get enough effigies. Also, the HP will go down incrementally again.
Theres a ring in Heide that makes
minimum health be 75% instead of 50%.
Cant remember exactly where it was though, sorry :(

Stay at Heidi then you can get the ring of binding that limits reduction of health when you die.

Is the pursuer ultra greatsword any good moveset and scaling wise?

It's incremental, and it's probably a good idea to use one now. The beginning of the game can be pretty tough since you don't have a lot of Estus yet, so being crippled at 50% health is only going to make things worse. You come across quite a few effigies through the game, I finished my first run with over 70 (although I only used a couple).

If you turn left at the big room with the sword knight and two shield knights, it's up the drawbridge in front of the cathedral (but before the boss door).

Great Club is one of my favorite weapons and carried me through NG+. Smashing motherfuckas never gets old. And the damage on dat 2h heavy spin attack...

I may invest in that. I got summoned into a game where the host was using that and he was hitting super hard on the Old Knights. I was wondering why he even need to summon anyone lol

Now dual wielding two +5 Poison Manslayers... The game is now Poison Souls. It only takes two power stance L1's to inflict poison on any enemy I've encountered so far.

Unfortunately that doesn't stop the hallway before Velstadt from being a big piece of shit, though.

Probably just to go even faster, I did that a couple times in NG+ if I came across a summon sign. I love my Great Club, I can take down the giant knights at
Dragon Shrine
in two hits on NG+.

Nearly finished with Shaded Woods. Took a look at Drangleic Castle to grab the
Faraam set
, well worth the pain that those
Ruin Sentinels
were bringing upon me.

I friggen love this game.

So I beat the
Covetous Demon yesterday , bastard ate my equipment (I was so not expecting that) and then I was like WTF do I do and then I beated him naked and bare handed took me a while but his pattern was easy enough and got him first try and then I realized that my equipment was actually sent back to my inventory so I could have requiped my stuff while fightning him -_-

But I had great fun !

80 hours in and the Blacksteel Katana still didn't drop lol. I've been using the Washing Pole and enjoying it a lot, though.

I prefer the washing pole by a fair margin - the blacksteel katana is actually my off-hand weapon on that hand since the washing pole has fairly weak durability. I'm trying to get far enough into my NG+ so I can get a second one already :D

I went the same way my first time too and while it was tough it was still managable. You will get a decent amount of effigies as the game goes on so don't worry too much about using one, just play patiently and you should be fine.

What's up with Navlaan invading everywhere ?

Fuck that dude. Out of all the NPCs and enemy characters, I hate him the most. Too over powered in my opinion. Too close? He can one shot you. Too far, he releases that hex cloud or whatever it is and if it hits you once, all the subsequent hits are going to land as well. I pretty much had to cheese him every fight, because straight up wasn't working.

The scaling is good, but the moveset is not enjoyable for me. Don't like how it starts with an overhead.

Great, thanks everyone! Cool, I'll use an effigy for sure. I will eventually go back for the ring, but I think I need a bit more practice first. It's weird that I was able to kill the big guard with the sword fairly easily, but just kept getting my ass handed to me by the one with the mace.

I didn't know about being able to invade L
icia the Miracle lady
in my first run. I picked up the C
rushed Eye Orb
in the U
ndead Crypt
and then promptly forgot about it, so NG+ was my time to shine...

Holy fuck,
Wrath of the Gods is insanely powerful! And can hit you from across the room... That fight reminded me a lot of PVP with all the goddamn magic spamming, and such a tiny arena too. Thankfully poison prevailed in the end.

Many questions!

How did you get two Manslayers, was it via NG+? Did you infuse them with poison or do you use their natural abilities? If the former, how are they holding up with the damage reduction?

My favourite weapon from the first game. Great Club + Darkmoon Blade was the shit.

Dunno but it sounds to me that the Defender Greatsword might become my new favourite weapon in this one. I just need to get my hands on it first.

Get her health low, she heals. Get close to her, Wrath of the Gods. Get her health low, she heals...

How is it against all the bosses that require Lucatiel? I just wanna run through NG+ as quickly as possible.

so a little confused on infusing... So if I have a Claymore +6 with C C scaling, should I infuse it with fire (I have no stats in faith)? My base goes down but the fire damage make it slightly better I believe and it still stays at C C scaling. Is there any reason I shouldn't do this? I'm afraid to mess up my prime weapon.

Wow, covenant of champions makes a world of difference with a brand new game.
I didn't realize this until I defeated some of the earlier bosses. I was thinking to myself "Man, this has got to be the hardest entry in the Souls series...". Then I read in this thread that it increased the difficulty of the game so I abandoned the covenant. Now I'm feeling the urge to rejoin since I was starting to get used to that level of challenge.

According to the wiki, enemies deal double the normal damage and have 1.5 the normal defense. I don't know if that's accurate though.

I wanted to go for the added challenge so I took it right from the start. I made it past a few bosses, but I just gave up at no man's wharf. It was making some fights impossibly difficult with my current build.

ughhhhhhhhhhh the fucking "oh you pressed a button? that's cute. i'm going to ignore it" thing dark souls likes to do occasionally just fucked me so bad
been slowly getting better at the smelter demon. i had him down to TWO more hits. maaaybe 3. so i'm like, fuck yes this is it! im finally gonna beat him. i walk in so he can do one of his usual combos, dodge roll out of the way and...wait. WHY DIDNT I ROLL. OH NO. fucking hits me. and that stun locks me so i can't roll out of the 2nd attack in his combo. fucking dead. RAGE

Welp, I finally beat
Darklurker
. After accepting that beating it with pure melee was above my capabilities. I tried to soul spear the hell out of it, for a pleasant surprise, it went down in 5-6 spears.

Boy it felt good.

It's great for
Flexile
and
Smelter
, but I used my Greatsword for
Rotten
. Those three are much easier to keep her alive on than
Sinner
. Overall, I found NG+ to be quite easy and plowed through it in just a couple days.

And protip for just about anyone - abuse the heck out of the R2+forward lunge. If you only have time for one hit, it does way more damage than a normal attack, and covers a huge amount of distance so you don't have to be as close. I use that almost exclusively against a lot of bosses. Staggers most normal enemies as well, perfect for a Great Club overhead swing follow-up.

So I've got all 4 G
iant
s
ouls
yet I'm still doing insignificant damage (around 100) to V
endrick
. Is just this the way this boss is ?

"oh you pressed a button? that's cute. i'm going to ignore it"
I haven't run into this problem actually. Aside from running out of stamina, my button inputs always seem to be registered. The thing that gets me is how big of a buffer there is. It seems like I can input an attack or roll while I'm on the ground or something and then my character will still eventually do it. I have a bad habit of mashing until the character does what I want, so I end up with repeated stuff all the time. Don't know how many times it's killed me because it remembered an extra press of the attack button, from before the first attack even came out.

it happened in ds1 occasionally too. it would just totally ignore an input. but in ds1 it actually would queue it up and whatever button you hit would trigger like 2 seconds late
in ds2 it just totally ignores it as if you never pressed the button

i'm not sure which is more annoying haha

Also, you can power stance that action. is a lot of fun.

My new short term goal in this game is to guard-break stagger a player with power stance great clubs, switch to a dagger and crit to the face. Having goals is important.

Nice, gonna do some clean up before starting NG+

I did both Heide and the area after it (
No Man's Wharf)
before the Forest. I don't think there's any clear path you should follow.

Waiting for a summons in front of the
Black Gulch
boss, I entertained myself with the many, many, MANY bloodstains in the area. Ghosts trying to take a swig of estus and suddenly feeling very very tired (poison), taking a dive off the ledges to get to the lower level and failing to stick the landing...

My favorite was a death from the grabby black creatures who hide in the oil pools - suddenly the ghost gets picked up and dangles in the air for a couple of seconds before falling over. Hilarity.

Haha, I feel your pain. I was a pure Str build and eventually respeced to Faith for Lightning Spears. Went down in about the same and all I could think was "god dammit".
