Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

That reused Super Scope animation makes me cry :(

fdsLukN.jpg

Yeesh, now that you mention it, that looks pretty bad.

Sakurai specifically noted that he would have liked to do balance patches/DLC for Brawl but couldn't because of the Wii's architecture. I would be surprised if we didn't get that sort of content for Smash 4, especially since SSB DLC would practically print money.

There is a lot of love for Zelda items this time around. I hope we get the Ice Rod!

There's no dedicated Smash team, though. I don't think there's a good way to have people dedicated to making Smash content after release.

Yeah, that's the other problem.

They could just hire iron galaxy to handle season 2 of smash bros, duh.

That said, once the team is dissolved, that is a little sad, but, once the game is complete, they wouldnt need the FULL team to make DLC. They could hire out a small studio to work on the DLC, get sakurai to approve (though the man is so dedicated i doubt that would happen). Unfortunately, smash DLC means no new sakurai game in the near future if this is the case.

Yea that's the only problem... but since Sakurai has full control of the development they might be able to pull it off, with maybe a smaller team, as long as he's involved.

Seeing all this talk about new characters, there isn't a hint of Captain Falcon yet is there? :( Three of my friends are obsessed with him in a non-serious way and I keep telling them "The knee will come don't worry!" and they keep replying: "Just watch, Nintendo will screw this one up..." so it would be nice to put the argument to rest as funny as it is :P Though seriously, Nintendo has no reason to remove him right?

No reason at all. If not we riot on Miiverse.
edit: I never haerd of Sakurai not liking Falcon...

I'd like to be excited about smash brothers year after year, rather than once every 6 years. Smash hype is the greatest hype.

I'm actually ok if they don't do regular balance updates, but being able to fix game-breaking bugs, software exploits, and broken characters (things that are basically bad enough to ban characters from tournaments) would be ideal. That could be done once or twice, and that's fine.

I hope nintendo is learning a bit, but only time will tell.

Yep, only time will tell but it could happen!

wasn't he one of the most disliked characters of sakurai? hence why he sucks in brawl, thou I love the character, I know is unlikely they'll drop it, is one of the original 12, and such an iconic figure in smash, I mean, the Knee!

I'm pretty sure that information is bogus.

is this a stealth confirmation of the super scope though?

It's more likely since I can't really see Super Scope going anywhere but staying in the game.

He was a secret character in Brawl, too. There's no way they're cutting such a fan-favorite character.

He'll be there. He's one of Smash's most iconic characters.

He's one of the original secret characters.

The original secret characters aren't going anywhere.

Well that reassures me and my friends, thanks :) And yes the knee... how can Sakurai hate the knee? D:

It's really about time C. Falco got cut. Hasn't had a single game for more than a decade, and won't be getting any more games either.

This too.

Now while that's quite a realistic outlook in terms of F-Zero games, they also put it into Nintendo Land so I'm sure Nintendo is atleast somewhat aware of the fans behind it plus I don't see why they should annoy the fanbase of him in Smash, I mean it's not like a already established character would ruin the game in any way.

They are probably waiting to announce him at the same time they reveal the new F-zero for Wii U during next Nintendo direct.
Pls Iwata.

I wish, that would be awesome, I mean we can dream...

April Fools was yesterday!

Indeed it was :P

No reason at all. If not we riot on Miiverse.

Well if it happens count me in! D:

The smart thing to do, even though everyone would hate it, is to create all the content on the disc and lock some of it away until a scheduled DLC release date.

Wow, so fucking dumb. Sakurai is just re-using animations and assets and applying them to random items now.

Just kidding, of course. Game's a work-in-progress guys ;) Item looks tight!

I remember I read something like that in a smashboards thread couple of years ago, take it with a grain of salt thou P:

I know sakurai used ganon for some demos when brawl was out, but does he really main dorf? xD

Well if he does, kudos to him I can't play well with Dorf at all, my main is Lucas :P

That defeats every inherent possible value of DLC, so um no thanks.

If you're making all the DLC within the normal development cycle then you might as well have it available on the actual disk - anything else will just make literally every gamer hate you (citation: Capcom). DLC's strengths lie in being able to put additional work into a game beyond the date the date that it goes gold and, as a result, extend its lifecycle.

Also having something like that would mean no balance patches, something a fighting game like Smash could greatly benefit from.

Except it solves the problem that the Smash Bros. team is not actually a Smash Bros. team, so balance patches are sort of a pipe dream, anyway. The SFxT thing you allude to is also sort of preferable to Mortal Kombat's problem where they either had tons of online matches fail because everyone didn't have the same content or forcing large patches on users even if they didn't want the content in question.

That still doesn't help with balance patches at all though. You can't predict balance patches in advance and put them on the disc. And the forcing patches thing works pretty well, if people are really stubborn they don't have to get it.

Since Majora's Mask is an item, when Skull Kid is summoned while another Majora's Mask is on the stage he dons the Alfonzo mask instead! "It's not unusual to leave it to me!"
What can you say about Carlton?

He was Carlton.

Zelda items that might be cool:

Four Sword (came to mind first. Actually the cherry from 3D world might do this better)
Magic Rod/Fire Rod/Ice Rod
Tornado Rod
Hammer (megaton or skull would be cool)
Quake/Ether/Bombos medallions
Probably some Mask from Majoras... transformations would be too much though.
Ball and Chain
Cane of Somaria (drop blocks from who-knows-who-cares)
Guardian Acorn (take half-damage)
Piece of Power (do double damage)
Roc's Feather/Cape (I dunno, third jump?)
Magnetic Gloves (GET OVER HERE)
Seed Shooter (Randomly shoots one of Oracle's seed types)
Gnat Hat (Poison Mushroom at will)
Chain Chomp (Exactly what it sounds like)
Cane of Pacci (cause your enemies to trflip!)
Mole Mitts (or maybe Mogma Mitts, I dunno)
Spinner (Marble Garden Zone top, I guess)

et al

Alienating literally your entire fanbase is preferable to having a few users that don't understand how to download compatibility patches not be able to play online?

Nintendo has done compatibility patches before, they know how to do it. It's as simple as throwing up a little notice for the user to read that says they have to download a thing before they can play online. Heck, they could feasibly even matchmake groups of people without compatibility patches if they're concerned about a large group of their fanbase not wanting to download large patches. There are plenty of ways to work around that.

As for the Smash Bros. team not being a concrete team, it's not difficult to just get a small, dedicated team to work on DLC or balance patches post-release. As I mentioned before, Sakurai himself was interested in doing some sort of post-release updates for Brawl, so there's no doubt that he has considered how he would do it.

If you're putting things on the disk anyway, in this day and age there's no real benefit to locking it away from the user. It just creates significant backlash and will undoubtedly be found ahead of time, ruining any potential surprise/game extension that real DLC could have. Also it's kinda sorta really screwed up and unethical.

I think he listed him as his favorite character for the Japanese website for SSB64. Maybe you're misremembering that.

This makes no sense, if you can lock it away you can release it on launch day to begin with.
Besides I don't understand the concern about not people who don't go online not being able to update, if they want to play online they'll have to download it presumably.

I think people would view it as a "waste of a stage," but I think Oubliette (Metroid Prime: Hunters) would be a perfect scrolling stage for the 3DS. Once you get to the top of the tree-claw thing, the Smash Ball could replace the Omega Cannon! Gorea would be a neat enough stage hazard, floating around and shooting projectiles on occasion. Hell, even the Hunters could take occasional potshots. They'd basically be glorified Topi / Polar Bears like on Icicle Mountain.

I was actually thinking along the same lines the other day. Hunters, for all its faults, does have some pretty interesting locales. Nothing terribly notable in the grand scheme of Metroid, but interesting enough to make for an exciting arena.

On the other hand, a BSL stage that tours through all six areas would probably take the cake.

Someone started talking items and now I'm here thinking up an item list.

Mario Series

Lakitu's Cloud: Jump into it and now you can travel the screen with your own running/dashing ability.
(Midair dash dancing, let's go.)

Flagpole: Placing this at an edge makes it so when you're launched in its direction, your character gets a one time free save (you grab the pole and slide down, SMB sound effects and all). The hard part is lifiting and moving it into place (it's a heavy item).

Kuribo's Shoe: Allows you to bound across the stage picking up momentum the longer the distance traveled. You also gain super armor, however you can only attack people by jumping on them.

Donkey Kong Series

Animal Buddy Crates: Cracking one of these open summons Rambi or Expresso that you can either ride on or agitate into attacking nearby opponents. While riding on them, you can use any item you might have picked up before getting in the saddle. (Jousting anyone?)

DK Coin: Replaces the standard shield for three hits and provides full coverage from any attack. Cannot be jumped out of however.

The Legend of Zelda

Iron Boots: Your weight doubles and you gain the properties of a fast falling character. Downward aerials and attacks involving kicks also get a massive attack buff. Can also be magnetized.

Grandma's Soup: Fully heals the person that collects it and doubles the strength of the next used attack.

Kirby

Crystal Shards: Throwing one of these at an opponent has them "collect" it. Instantly upon contact, Ripple swoops ins and true to the "shard collected" animation from Kirby 64, she attempts to drag the opponent upward and off screen.

Pokemon

Life Orb: Holding this increases your attack strength but damages you regularly for 10 seconds

Leftovers: Heals 1/16th of 100 percent of damage every 5 seconds when picked up for 30 seconds.

Choice Scarf: Wearing this increases the speed of your attack and the recovery on said attack, but you are locked into using that one attack for the duration of your stock.

Eject Button: When the person wearing this is hit with a physical attack, the attack's knock back is immediately applied to the attacker. One time use.

Aegislash: [Not technically an item but still has to be mentioned] When called onto the field, the player can equip it, gaining a new set of normals and King's Shield for a few seconds. Aegislash frequently consumes your soul however.

I gotta think about this some more, this could be fun.

Pic of the day. The Gust Bellows can blow opponents away with its powerful wind blasts. When someone drops it, though, the gusts run wild! Out of the new items, more than a few will be from The Legend of Zelda series. We'll take the most interesting and straightforward ones and reformulate them to match the Smash Bros. world.
*chuckles upon seeing this* Crom laughs at your four winds.

I consider it mediocre at best with some flashes of brilliance (anything with the Timeshift Stones), but the entire thing was such a slog to get through thanks to the padding/Fi and I found the execution of the overworld/plot/most of the soundtrack quite poor.

Pretty much this. My only knowledge of the CD-I games are the now-classic cutscenes and they'd pepper what is very likely hilariously awful gameplay.

It's a shame you let Fi get to you. She was annoying for sure but she didn't take up that much of my time or actually interfere with the game's content. And that content was one of the best Zelda games; some of the best dungeons in the franchise and great use of items and combat. The plot and characters, Fi notwithstanding, were also among the best and did a good job of turning franchise standards on their head; Zelda turning out to be extremely manipulative and in control for most of the game, Groose defying stereotypes and turning out to be an awesome heroic character. The only part of the game that really felt like padding was the return to Skyview Temple. Everything else the game had you do introduced new gameplay elements and were generally challenging. Even if you didn't like them they still didn't take up that much time. The only issue I had with the tadtone thing was that the flooded forest looked meh. That was probably some kind of holdover from Twilight Princess; remember that TP trailer where Link was swimming in a flooded forest?

So this item is blowing out air when it is held by a player automatically right?
Link is probably dropping the item, based on Sakurais mentioning how it operates when dropped
How would Toon Link drop it like that in that position? Wouldn't he throw it forward since he is stopping momentum?

You probably control it with the attack button like other weapon items. Hopefully you can aim around while using it so you can knock people into the air or blow them down off a ledge.

The only way I can see someone really disliking SS is if you're more of a fan of the exploration Zelda's like ALttP. For those people, SS is pretty much the culmination of what's wrong with modern Zelda.

But then they made ALBW so it balances out.

But then they made ALBW so it balances out.

Yeah, but ALBW sacrificed dungeon complexity and challenge to make that happen. It was still a great game but Skyward Sword absolutely kills it in dungeon design. Even though the overworld was divided in Skyward Sword it was really no different functionally from Ocarina of Time where the sky is Hyrule Field and the forest, volcano, and desert are the linear areas you can access from Hyrule Field. The main difference being that those areas are much bigger, more complex, and explorable themselves. I find complaints about the world to usually be splitting hairs because most of the people that complain about it had no problem with OoT. I also think that Link's Awakening is much worse with the "handholding" textboxes but that doesn't stop it from being beloved, either.

Regardless, even though Skyward Sword's problems didn't bother me that much they were still problems. It had some pacing issues that were mostly due to Fi talking too much and would benefit greatly from fixing those. In regards to linear vs. nonlinear, both have their strengths and weaknesses. Personally I feel that linear is better for Zelda because that leads to stronger dungeon design. I think a middle ground between the two could make for a good game.

Glad to see so many new Zelda items. The fact that there were so few in the previous Smashes always bugged me. I mean, it's Zelda, for crying out loud, it's built on items.

I hope we get a different Metroid powerup; Screw Attack feels old.

Speed Boost would be awesome, or maybe even the Morph Ball.

I honestly never liked that an item was basically another character's move. They really need to get rid of it. The only exception is bob-omb, because even though it's a bomb, it's not the same as link's bomb. Screw attack is literally what samus has as her up b.

That said, I can't really think of anything in the metroid universe that could be used as an item that isn't already one of samus's moves. I didn't really play hunters well enough to know if there were any items in there. I'd like to see some more metroid reps as assist trophies. Mother brain was a good start.
