"Backtrack that or die." - Microsoft

Perhaps this was one bandwagon from Sony, Microsoft shouldn't have followed!? s/

On a serious note probably just trimming the "perceived" fat.

The hell is going on with Microsoft Game Studios?

Is there some sort of massive restructuring going on or something? Last E3 MS made it look like everything was peaches and cream and that devs were excited to work on new hardware. Cue talks of hundreds of studios lining up to work on Xbone.

Then the layoffs at MS Game Studios in Redmond happened. More to come!

So what the hell is going on? MS seemed to be making a X360-like comeback, well they certainly advertised as such with the Spencer promotion, and with Xbone sales lagging behind the PS4 you would think first party games would be a lock. But damn the wind has just dropped from the sails.... kinda depressing all around.

This must mean ms as a company is doomed and the entire gamging industry is fading into irrelevance. I have explored every possibility and only this one makes any sense

People were overreacting about SONY, but people were leaving SONY this people are getting layed off little difference. Sad people lost their jobs. but they handle third party stuff so maybe MS is weighing less on that

Not surprised, the games division at MS may appear to be doing well but there have been cracks appearing at MS for a long time. Selling game studios to Amazon, having to install Windows on their games console to compete, heads like Don Mattrick leaving. The writing was on the wall for a mass exodus of talent.

all this laid off in the industry...
question.. i mean it's fine (not fine, but it's a consolidated practice, so w/e) that they lay off "temporary" additional staff after major milestone are reached (like they lay off some art staff when the game is just missing the last qa phase and gg)...
but were these amount of laying off THIS common in the industry even before? i mean, i don't remember seeing game staff getting laid off like this (much) a few years ago.. bad economy hitting game company too, or they have changed they restructuring policies so they lay off everyone once they are no longer necessary in a project lifecycle?

From those 2 guys CVs it looked like they were both part of multimedia/marketing teams.

That loughman guy seemed to deal with the kind of art you'd see on POS or boxart

What studio did Microsoft sell to Amazon?

Windu

never heard about the cat, apparently
2 people in a company of about 100k. They probably let go 10 times that many people every week.

I think it might be a combination of a) companies trying to balance workforce with the ever-increasing costs of development, and b) growing social media avenues like Twitter making it easier than ever for these stories to break, where a number of years ago they may have been able to slip under the radar more often.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not. My detector is broken.

Memes are making it increasingly hard to have a reasonable discussion on this forum.

This is your first post in the thread isn't it? If there's something you want to discuss here then perhaps you should just say it.

Not actually saying anything makes discussion even more difficult, surely.

I wonder what Druckmann thinks about this new meme.
He became the boogieman of the industry!
Now that it's become a joke, it has taken pretty much all of the actual pressure from the initial situation off of him, so I'd imagine he's just fine with it.

It's sarcasm. the posts you quoted are based on some actual speculation posts about Sony after some layoffs, including one of the Uncharted 4 directors. The Druckmann joke comes from an IGN article erroneously suggesting Neil Druckmann influenced the firing of that director.

I'm honestly amazed Nelson is still there.

I doubt very much his corporate mouth piece action actually generates revenue for the xbox brand.

I dont think he meant it in that way, nintendo gets by without laying off anybody and isnt in a position where they have to, infact hiring more people would be the better thing to do.

Yup. As insane as Iwata can be, he understands this. If anything, Nintendo needs to expand even more.

I'm getting to the point where reading about layoffs doesn't effect me. This isn't exclusive to the game industry. No one works at one company for their life and retires in this age anymore. I entered the workforce a couple years ago and have already bounced around companies, same with everyone I know regardless of their field.

Up in the air, again and again!

After Sony Computer Entertainment WWS, then Microsoft GS, the next one shall be NINTENDO! Look out, Iwata. Alert is on, and on. (Just joking on the recent news...)
