Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

Even a shitload won't probably be enough, as 35 poise damage (ie. every great sword) seems to be enough to break the highest amount of poise with ease.

So yeah, stacking poise is quite worthless atm.

Shitload of poise can still block falchion-like weapons though. *sigh*

Also gotta wonder why they bothered making adaptibility add pathetic amounts of poise.

I regret killing the NPCs before going to NG+, those blue invaders are seriously annoying. I'm a Blue Sentinel myself and it's the same even when sparring.

I wondered where all the tryhard builds with Dual Avelyns, WotG or buffed MLGS are and it seems I found them in the Blue Sentinel Covenant because it wasn't so bad when I did PVP at the bridge in Iron Keep. Some of them also seem to be mulers, they have WotG even though the Rank 2 aura is missing for example, or maybe they got it in NG++, I don't know. I still have a good share of wins but it still is seriously annoying dealing with this over and over and the only magic you have is Sunlight Spear and Great Magic Barrier as I think magic makes the PvE experience a joke. A lot of them also seem to be on a much higher SL than me, you'd think they are Magic Glass Canons but actually need a lot of hits from my L. Defender Sword to die, even if buffed. The same case seems to be when I'm getting invaded by them since I entered NG+ yesterday. It's funny because when I invade with the blue orbs I win most of the time because it seems that the host is a bit lacking concerning the SL.

60 hours in, I'm still guard-breaking when I mean to attack :(

That is happening to me too, but I think it's because I'm using the Greatsword which requires you to orient yourself for attacks so if I'm in a situation where after backing away, I have to push forward toward the enemy for an attack and I will occasionally do a Bash instead of normal attack.

Are all the big slow weapons like that? I was SO damn confused the first time I used a large club, until I understood how it worked. I'm still not sure I like it. I guess it's more flexible but when I want to play like that I usually unlock, and now they mess with my locked-on gameplay... argh. So many whiffs with my large club and gyrm axe, got me killed a few times too. :( Maybe I'll stick with claymores and shit for this str build, lol...

So (ultra) greatswords, big clubs, and great axes have this "feature". I suppose the large hammers are the same?

Any tips about good guides (online or print) for DS2 and DS?
I don't want to spoil me completely or play the whole games with a guide, but I guess its not bad to have something to look into sometimes.

To take time off from farming that final Mad Warrior chest piece (whilst going bonkers in the process myself) and so that I can co-op with fellow Gaffer Stormtrooper, I've made a fisticuffs/faith-only build.

I'm only up to The Forest of Fallen Giants but DEAR GOD... bare handed alone was pretty amazing, but now that I have dual Caestus, I seem to be tearing through baddies at a rate of knots with nary a care in the world. So good! Crowd control takes a little getting used to, but man oh man, this is a revelation!

Any recommendations on what stats to concentrate on to make the most of the Caestus and get a good level of Faith spells? I'm thinking END, STR, DEX and FTH at the moment. Maybe a few bits in Health and Attunement too. What are your thoughts GAF?

It adds 3 +'s to your NG+

Are you sure?
My very first playthrough was on Company of Champions and it really didn't feel THAT hard, it felt kinda similar to my first ever run of Dark Souls 1.
I guess I haven't experienced a non Company of Champions run on NG yet but if what you say is true that would be ridiculously easy.

Caestus benefits from a full warrior build (40 str/ 40 dex). You won't be able to reach that unless you make major concessions with faith and attunement. But then you'll also lack defense unless you invest points in to health and equip load. You might be able to just get by on low attunement, like around 20-30 and pump up your slots with equipment rings. You'll need a fairly high faith to make use of the better spells (Sunlight Blade, Sunlight Spear, Great Heal, WotG), I recommend sacrificing Dex for Faith since Strength also gives bonus defense to help with survivability.

Focus on Strength, Faith and either Vigour or Vitality (I would say Vigour > Vitality unless you like having high health).
Cap Attunement to either 20 (4 slots) or 30 (6 slots), wear Witch's Hat or Southern Ritual Band to pump up slots if you need it.
Stop Endurance at 20.
Pump up Dex to 1.5x Caestus dex requirement if you want to power stance it.
Adaptability is up to you. Sacrifice this for Dex if you want.
Leave everything else.

I fucked up too a few times missing my target and getting wrecked but I got better at it. I also don't particularly like Large Club's moveset but the damn thing has an S scaling with str at +10, I'll try and see if I can get used to it.

Also yesterday I wasted almost an hour at the
Ancient Dragon
like an idiot, at first he destroyed me with his
aoe fire attack
by depleting all my stamina when blocking with my Gyrm Greatshield +6 and after some tries I decided to upgrade it to +10 where I could block the attack and don't get any damage but he continued to kill me and got really frustrated...the problem was that I was too greedy the whole time, after many deaths and unsuccessful summons I played carefully with just landing a few hits when he was to the ground while managing to have some safe distance from him and finally got him. The fight was so easy yet I made it so hard, it was clearly an hour long brain fart but when I decided to use my brain the game rewarded me. God I love the Souls games so much.

Wow! Thanks for the breakdown.

I’m not too fussed about a particular level cap, only in respects to keeping within co-op range with said fellow Gaffer. To that end, I started as a Warrior because their opening stats allow me to power stance dual Caestus without any stat investment.

I kind of want the Faith just to compliment the fisticuffs and open up ranged options. I’m keeping very light equipment wise as I’ll be dodging a whole lot, so I wasn’t sure whether pumping VIG was worth it and just using those points in END instead… unless good Faith equipment is particularly heavy?

EDIT: I'm thinking STR 40 DEX 40 ATT 20 FTH 30/36. Rest in END/VIT. Is that conceivable?

I am terrible with the arced sword or any other large weapon

Shit

What's wrong with it? I'm currently levelling up my Vitality so I can use it without sacrificing agility, since I can never get used to the movesets of the true Greatswords

I can only take 3 swipes with it before running out of stamina, but that's the risk you take with large weapons :P

I raised my END to 28 so I have an extra action with the Greatsword (that's while wearing Third Dragon Ring).

edit:
Theres is literally no point in fighting the Ancient Dragon iirc. Its also an incredibly lame boss fight.
The point is knowing you are better than him.

Guess who's at belfry sol and has all the item discovery boosting equipment and about 15 rusted coins? I'm going to do that mad warrior so I rank up the bells without being ganked. I could give you one when you catch up.

Try the dragon rings and putting points into stamina. I quite far with my mastadon greatsword.

Is that Nappa as Kratos?

Just to say you did it, really. He gives another giant's soul, but V is easy enough without it.

He's actually an easy fight, but his chance of complete randomness with his attacks is a pain in the ass. There are ways to prevent him from doing certain attacks, but it's not 100%.

So, yeah, kind of like you said...lame.

Alright I finally finished NG last night. I am anxious to head on to NG+, but I want to make sure I tie up and loose ends before I do. There was a post in one of the DS2 OTs in which someone made a spoiler tagged list for exactly this reason but I'm having a hard time finding it. Does anyone remember the post I am talking about? Or can anyone give me some similar pointers about things I should take care of before I move on?

So I've fucked up both Lucatiel and Bernharts quest lines.

Are they remotely possible in NG+ or would it be easier to just start a new char specifically for both those trophies?

Also what's the fastest, path of least resistance though the game in NG+? I just want to get to NG++ to get the Wellegar spells.

It shouldn't be all lost, you can try a bonfire ascetic for another go.

The best chime has a faith requirement of 50, but since that is secondary you should be fine with 30/36. Just know that 50+ faith makes dealing 1000+ damage easy and WotG wrecks everything. Also since you're going heavy into dodging I would put some points in to Adaptability, 20 or so.

This plus I have already saw the credits so it was the only boss that I haven't killed before going to NG+, also it gives you 120.000 souls I think which was not bad considering that I had no souls since everyone seems to have moved on to NG+ and I can't be summoned even in the
Drangleic Castle
. BTW do you keep the
Giant Souls
in the next playthrough or should I consume them before starting NG+?

Same here, I want to know about this too before going to NG+.

My dual poison Manslayer build has been ruining people in PVP, it's titanite chunks galore!

Out of curiosity, what is the highest number of flask chugs you've seen during an invasion? I had one opponent this evening who chugged 8 times to try and postpone their poison death. I was being terrible with my stamina management and kept running out, allowing them to sprint away multiple times and escape to chug city.

Thanks again. I've written all your advice down! XD!

I've been thinking about a similar build, though maybe with a bleed-infused side weapon to apply both statuses. How many hits do you need (on average) to apply poison?

The only reason he is of any difficulty is due to his attacks being one hit KO's. Most of the strategies I've seen are just shooting magic/arrows from afar or mashing at his legs etc.

Seems like a very mundane fight. Kalameet was so much better imo.

Besides he seems quite nice :)

Is bleed even any good in this game

Massive amount of souls, very easy, multiple ascetics on the run (so you can repeat ad infinitum), plus I think there's some twinkling titanite that drops too.

Oh so you have to burn an ascetic to reactivate the thing? At the bonfire right before the thing?

Also, does it stack in your inventory (and against the boss whose defense depends on the number of giant souls you have)?

I missed Lucatiel questline too on NG and I am trying it now on NG+.
Flexile Sentry
went down fairly easy with one other summon with me. Next going to try
Lost Sinner
and from what I've heard it might be easier than first time through as Lucatiel has more HP and you have much better gear against it. So atleast it seems possible enough to try to do it on NG+.

Invasions are really common in NG++ it seems, already I've gotten 3 in 2 hours. When in NG+ I got 1.

Theres is literally no point in fighting the Ancient Dragon iirc. Its also an incredibly lame boss fight.
I like that boss, gives an actual challenge. Lot of the other bosses are kinda easy now, with a few exceptions.

Though lame or not, he has a point, a Giant Soul. Plus lots of souls if you are still interested in leveling up. He drops like 200k+ in NG+

Playthrough 3.

When I would do invasions, I almost always won by playing aggressively. It's like the majority of people in Dark Souls are afraid to fight other humans, so I would just pressure the shit of them with a big strength weapon (Claymore/Mastodon Greatsword/etc) while they played defensively. Used guard breaks for the greatshield bros. Worked really well the majority of the time.

I've noticed some people are really too easy to bait into a free guard break. Especially the R1 spammers. :P They somehow seem to think that blocking right after you exhausted your stamina by mashing the R1 button is a good idea. O.o

YEEEEEEES! You are a gem!
Where would you be without me, don't forget I've got your two +5 blacksteel katanas

Hmm, not found a Dragon Ring yet. Funny that I was so happy when I found out we were getting 4 ring slots, but it's still not enough for me :P

And yeah, XANDER CAGE made it for this thread and let me use it :)
I miss havel's ring really it would be so helpful. I've just got that dragon ring, the binding on permanently.

Oh that's cool.

I rolled around in the water by the
Pharros Contraption
at the beginning of the
Iron Keep but the flaming platforms still killed me in about 2 seconds

:(

It's challenging for the wrong reasons. Artorias was challenging not because he hit hard (though he still hit pretty hard), but because he has a good range of attacks, he's mobile and he's aggressive.

Yeah, Artorias, Manus, 4 Kings etc are tough but fair. Ancient Dragon is just like a beefed up version of the bridge drake in undead burg, and FUCK that guy.

So last night for fun I tried PVP'ing in bellbros with dual poison claws (that natively have bleed) with my DEX character. Kind of looked like a Trojan Wolverine. But...hot damn the moveset for claws are terrible. Slow enough that i'm not getting the first hit, terribad reach, no good moves out of the entire 1h/Power Stance set. Shame too, because in my mind, it sounded really fun. The only fight i won out of like 15-20 was when i backed a shield user into a corner and could just let loose with the bleed/poison.

Afterwards, I tried dual wielding katanas, i think it was blacksteel and uchi, but i hated the L1 attacks.

Going to see how i do with a great scythe next. I noticed that if you're up close, the damage is only half of normal, but in PVP you are rarely that close as they're always circling around or backing up. So far, Mirrah Greatsword is my BNB for PVP wins though.
