I feel the same. Even more if the game is scheduled for holidays. Way too soon to hype it, it will all vanish out until the next SSB direct (one month before the release).

They're gonna give a rough estimate of what period to release the game, which can be from in the summer to the holidays, if that estimate is in the summer, than it would be around the time nintendo would start hyping a game and releasing more info about it and that would be a solid reason for the direct at this time, we really no jack shit about this game, we hardly even have real gameplay vids to go off of

Even if they say Summer 2014, the fact that they don't have yet a clear date means it would be rather September. And even for September, the fact that they are not sure on a clear date means that it might end up in October or November, as obviously there are still things to be done. And they would have just presented this at E3 anyhow. We still don't know shit about what's coming after MK8.
I mean, I want to see a gameplay video, I don't really care about characters, but I want info about online, but if this game doesn't come out in the next 3 months there is not really a point for a special SSB direct. This could have been part of the regular April direct as well. Building hype for a game with a special direct more than 3 months away is like stating that there is nothing between MK and this.
I hope that I am wrong. I hope that this is just my bad mood today.

Well there is a difference Between realistic expectations and some of the more negative postsI think negative hype cycle work for people because its their coping systems. I don't know if I should expect anything "fantastic" since I think I am going to watch direct with low expectation so I can ended up being happy with the trailer.
To me, this Direct will give me new info regarding Smash. What kind of info? It could be anything.

They're being developed in tandem, and they will release at the same time. You'll definitely get 3ds footage.
Also, if this Direct doesn't have a new character or the firm release date, it will be a fail.
I don't think i'd expect a release date till something like E3 unless it's sooner than that, but things have happened before.
