Let's all talk about Gray Spirit Summoning (again)

If you have the gal to summon me to your game, don't sprint into a crowd of enemies and expect me not to turn off my PS3. If you're going to summon me, fight me one on one, otherwise I'll be a dick back.
You don't lose anything when you die as a gray spirit, and that's the whole point of the covenant.
Edit: also you're screwing yourself in the long run by turning it off.

Man, I got summoned about 4 times last night on my first trip through *mild area spoilers* H
alls of Pharros
. Every time it was in that first open area with the water, big enemy, and annoying little rat that intoxicates you, and every time my opponent either fired magic arrows (chipping through my shield) or nukes (which were hard to dodge because of the connection).

I lost every time, but not before getting in close and hopefully giving them pause for thought with a couple of well-placed strikes. Got them all down to about half health, and in a 1v1 fight I know I could have won. It's no biggy though, because as the poster above me said, you don't lose anything - you keep your souls, you don't go hollow, you don't lose geographical progress in your game. It's purely a way for that covenant to shine in its own dickish way. Maybe one day you can join and show others how to fight the good fight!

Sure people go for the cheap win, but there's no use getting beat up over it. Let the baby have its bottle, I say.

Edit:
It's not really about them having the gall to summon you. Technically, you are stepping on their turf/training ground and getting summoned automatically.
Philosophically, they are proving themselves to their leader by showing how much of a dick they can be to passing players ;)

What do they gain from killing me?

I believe they get a Rat's Tail (which they use to build covenant rank) and the equivalent of your souls (if that). I think you would get a Lockstone if you killed them.

I'm not sure what they get, but just so you know, force disconnecting too many times makes it so you can't coop anymore. You can only be invaded at that point unless you use the bone of order in your inventory, and you only get to use that once on a single character.

Thanks for the info! I wasn't sure how the Bone of Order worked.

Kept trying to do the smelter demon with lucatiel, got him the first time I solo'd him.

Then died 2 time to the old iron king due to rolling into the lava, and then proceeded to kill him the first time I did not roll into the lava.

#thisisdarksouls.

...Don't read them?

Most of them work just by being there, like having a couple signs next to an unremarkable bit of wall, or in places where it's not obvious that they can be reached. I'd rather they disappeared from my game completely, though I enjoy some of the 'funny' ones (lol at whoever wrote 'man ahead' right next to Bernhardt.. so appropriate :D), they're not worth the handholding overdose.

I dunno. There are just as many troll messages that are put in front of normal walls or telling you there is treasure below if you just jump of this cliff.

I like them. I don't see them as hand holding as much as they give a sense of a wider community at play. Do you not like blood stains or petrified statues either? They do exactly the same. Their presence highlights the fact that someone died nearby, the latter of which even indicates how.

I guess it's part of the price for having access to co-op and invasions. You can always play offline if you can live without them, though.

What do you guys think about the Murakama? I've got it on +10 and it does some serious damage but I'm not loving the move set. I still haven't decided on my main weapon after 60 hours 0_0

It's way too slow for my tastes, but then again, I'm rocking a straight sword.

It is kind of slow. I've been using the Sun Sword so far as a Dex/Str build, but the damage from it is just laughable. Do you have any other suggestions? I've tried the Blacksteel on +10, not really digging it either.

You might want to use the curved dragon great sword, you use a boss soul to acquire it. Personally, I use the drakekeeper straight sword. It has the longest range of the straight swords and decent damage when infused.

First timer here, just beat the first (?) boss
last giant
and, as I haven't played DaS either, I have a bunch of pretty basic questions:

  1. What's the purpose of the fog doors? Masking load times?
  2. Any way to compare the stats of my currently equipped weapon / armor with the ones from the shop?
  3. Equipped weapons on the first slot deal more damage than in the 2nd and 3rd slot? What about shields?
  4. Is it preferable to upgrade weapons and armor or to buy new ones?
  5. How do I point my bow / crossbow in first person?
  6. Got the sword from the sitting knight in the
    Forest of giants
, it's weaker than my current sword (120 vs 75) but I see that it deals lighting damage (50 or so). Should I use it?

Cheers, the Drakekeeper Sword looks like a good fit, I'll try to get it.

I just beat D
arklurker
on a pure melee (str) build, on my second try. Feel like a goddamn boss. :) Honestly the A
byss
mobs gave me more trouble, haha. I tried the
Shaded Woods portal
'cause it seemed easier, but those damn thieves got me so I settled for the
Drangleic portal (the Gulch one can fuck off, just too much of an annoyance to reach)
. My strategy was
to buff my Large Club+10 with charcoal resin and infuse the Rebel Greatshield with dark, so that it blocks Dark damage 100%. It worked like a charm! It blocks every attack except their fireballs, which can be strafed/dodged. Then when they split, I had to play really defensively, tanking as many hits as I could and chucking black firebombs every now and then. I dared not swing my club too often because it leaves me wide open and I needed all the stamina I could get to block their magic.

Edit: oh, there's a way to sorta coop the
Abyss
dungeons! YUou can't drop a white soapstone sign there, but
you can drop a red soapstone sign. You then get summoned as an Abyss phantom and the enemies aggro you as well as the host. You have to be careful to avoid friendly fire, and of course the host has to kill you before progressing into the final fog, and of course you can't coop the boss, but it can help for taking out the mobs. :) Just helped a friend with that a few times.

So... Just started the game. Don´t know if I should go pure melee or some kind of Str + faith/int build.

What do you guys consider most fun and not entirely worthless in pvp/pve?

You can respec your character in game so there's no reason not to try whatever you like and change it later.

From my experience (I'm not good though so maybe I'm wrong) Str/Faith is good for PvE but crap for PvP since all the weapons with good scaling to strength are too slow and the faster weapons (that gives you a chance in PvP) are only a few so you don't have many choices for PvP with a Str character.

Dex characters have so many more choices as far as weapons go for PvP. :(

But as maomaoIYP said you can always respec your stats so start with what sounds the most interesting build for you.

1. Fog doors create tension. You don't know what's on the other end of the door until you traverse it. It could be an ambush. It could be a bonfire. It could be a boss (and it often is). It makes for a good fakeout when you think a bossfight is ahead and start to get nervous only to find a bonfire.

2.Unfortunately I don't believe a way to compare weapons from the shop.

3. What slot you have a weapon in does not have any impact on it's damage output.

4. It's not an either or thing here. With weapons you want to find one that has good scaling with your primary stat, and has a moveset that you like. If you find a weapon that you like, then you are going to want to upgrade it. There is no linear progression of weapons in this game. You may find a weapon in the first hour of the game that you use all the way through the end. Or you may find a weapon late in the game that is better than your current one, and then you have to upgrade it a bunch to bring it up to par with your other upgraded weapons.

Similarly with armor, you are looking for something with a good balance of weight and defenses. There is no best armor, because some armor is too heavy for certain builds, while light armor would be too weak for other builds. It all comes down to how much you want to invest in the Vit stat. Or just pick the one that looks the coolest. But when you find a good set of armor, keep it upgraded.

5. When you two-hand a bow/crossbow (this should happen automatically with a bow), holding the attack button for the opposite hand (L1 if you have it in your right hand and R1 if you have it in your left hand) will allow manual aim.

6. Couldn't tell you. There are pros and cons to both. Weapons that have two attack types (physical + an element) have to pass through two different defenses, which means in general they will do less damage than a pure physical attack for pure melee builds. However, if you have a lot of faith, you get a bonus to lightning damage that might partly offset this penalty. Also, the lightning damage will allow you to do damage to enemies even when they are guarding (most shields do not have 100% lightning defense), and some enemies might resist physical but be weak to lightning.

Most dex or balanced weapon types have a version that scales more with str but have the same moveset, like the mastodon halberd, and viceversa. No str based katanas that I know of, though, or dex based great maces.

He's just playing by the rules of the game. You could just use a seed of a tree of giants whenever that happens and laugh your ass off.

Yeah, I said it on the other post, I do like blood stains and ghosts as that gives a sense of wider community like you say as well as subtle clues that are up to me to interpret instead of in your face "Illusory wall therefore bonfire", "Ambush ahead", "Try left and then treasure", etc. It doesn't really matter that a few of them are fake as it's usually obvious which are those. It's like some people are intent on transforming the Souls games into your average AAA experience in which you're told the solution to every situation before you even get the chance to try for yourself.

I don't think I should have to 'pay the price' in order to enjoy invasions and coop, that's sort of my point, just let me disable messages (and only messages) the same way I can disable chat. Easy!

I was wondering if that would work. Thought it was only when you're the one invaded (by red phantoms)?

Would be great, though. Set their own minions on them while they derp around taking pot shots with soul spear/magic arrows.

Do you think their inclusion in DeS or DaS 1 made those games "your average AAA experience"?

Thorough answers to my questions.
Thanks Thanasis!

Too bad about not being able to compare equipment, I suppose that's not the point of the game as every other RPG has this.

I asked about the weapon slots because when leveling up there's a window on the right side which reads Right Weapon and Left Weapon, with I, II and III icons on them, which led me to believe that it meant weapon slots.

sometimes i just dont get the whole summoning thing. i've been trying to find a summon sign for like 15 min now and there's nothing at all. I just spilled 3 human effigyS and it does t change anything. I don't really know wich covenant is best if i'm searching for summons. I'm blue sentinel now. Is it possible that its because i lit up the torch thingies...?

Did you burn the effigies or use them from the menu? You have to use them to become human and then summon signs will appear.

No i didnt burned them. I used one... And while waiting for summon signs i died, thats why i used several. Noone to be found i dont get it. Im human, im sure

Then either no one else is dropping signs or your total number of accumulated souls isn't compatible with the players that are (have to be within 50,000 soul memory). Are you making sure to check at the nearest bonfire and outside the boss fog wall for summon signs? Those are the two most common places where players will drop them.

And the beginning of the zone (the saltfort) where im trying to beat the boss isnt even spawning the enemies anymore (except downstairs)... Whats up with that?

Enemies stop respawning after being killed a certain number of times.

If you're looking for a summon sign in Sinner's Rise, an NPC named Lucatiel will be available to summon at the bottom of the elevator if you exhausted her dialogue at the No-Man's Wharf bonfire.

Yeah ive been staying at the bonfire... I'll check near the boss.

I spawned her once, then got killed at the boss and now her summon sign never appears anymore..
