Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

I wouldn't be surprised to see Ivysaur and Squirtle not make it back in, not because of something as silly as "too many slots" but rather because it's harder to reconcile them into fleshed out characters than Charizard (admittedly Ivysaur moreso than Squirtle). It feels like the three of them were picked to complement each other more than they were designed to be reps on their own, and they could cover a lot more ground by picking characters without that.

Charizard's a special case because he's practically one of the series mascots and got disproportionate amounts of love in X&Y.

When did Sakamoto do that? The Prime series is prettily self-contained to begin with

Perhaps non-canon was an extreme way of putting it - Other M's universe seems to be built around a story where Prime never happened. The original interview with Sakamoto kind of implies that he heavily neglected Prime on account of never working on it and assumed that Other M could fit despite it retconning things in Prime (mostly Prime 3 stuff like Samus doing joint missions in the past, and the Galactic Federation not being incompetent idiots and actually considering Samus a valuable asset).

we will know the full roster in the summer when the 3ds release

so the summer release June , July or August

all bets are on August late August

Oh man, the smash OTs will probably die down a bit, and the smash website will become super lame, since we'll know all the newcomers :(

I'm sure he'll still show them off little by little so we can see their Wii U character models before Wii U release, but most of smash hype will die down. Sad times :(

People are using the Pokémon via PokéBalls as evidence of over exposure. They're just extensions of an item. You don't see them complaining about Mario or Zelda items being too plentiful. Pokémon has one item in the game (now two but they do the same thing).

The whole thing is ridiculous. Pokémon is Nintendo's 2nd most popular franchise. Hell, it's the world's 2nd most popular franchise.

And last night's Direct even makes me want that Pokken thing to be true.

I agree. I keep seeing people saying they should cut Pokémon, and that it doesn't matter that it's a big franchise. Seeing people say things like "Pokémon should stick to its own series" and that they shouldn't be in it because it's "not a Nintendo franchise".

I honestly don't get people. They don't check facts and I honestly don't get the hate for Pokémon in this.

People just think someone is going to get the shaft, and a lot don't want it to be Mewtwo again. Seems like the Pokémon fall into this pecking order:

Mewtwo > Jigglypuff > Squirtle > Ivysaur >>>>>>>>>>>>> Pichu

I didn't sleep well tonight thinking Ness & Lucas might not have made the cut. I think I might have to seek professional help if both my mains are removed from the game :(

Ness is probably in, seeing as they need at least one Mother representative. Lucas, I'm not so sure, since there's only 10 spots left.

It's silly opinion and baseless conjecture. Nobody knows or can say what Sakurai's guidelines are for characters, he's never made it as clear cut and as simple as everyone seems to think it is. Whether it's franchise rep, uniqueness, how relevant a series is nowadays, etc. None of those things have been proven to be as true indicators on how the roster is made and determined.

This is why I think roster predictions are silly. They're fun to do, sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's really not much logic or reason put into putting someone like Greninja in the game other than "he's popular". Amount of characters per franchise, as far as I'm concerned, has no bearing on what characters get in the game.

It's really a combination of development time and ideas that make a character happen (and I guess popularity) coupled with probably Sakurai's own personal judgment on the character. None of this "it's mathematically proven that the Mario franchise has TOOOOO many characters to include Bowser Jr." or "F-Zero hasn't had a game in a decade, therefore Captain Falcon is gone". Maybe that would be the case if you were making the game but you're not lol. (Not you specifically, Joe).

I have no issues with them including more Pokemon or excluding Pokemon as long as the roster is not weighed heavily towards one franchise. I thought Brawl had a good number of Pokemon.

Is there actually a chance Cap Falcon and Ness won't be in this game? I mean there's a chance, but do we think it will actually come to pass?

Doubt it. The original cast are his babies.

Na, it's more than that. As said in my edited post, people want Pokémon cut. Some say no more than two reps, others say just one and no PokéBalls.

One person even said that because Pokémon is popular and gets representation because of it, then they may as well include GTA characters. I can't even follow that logic.

Well remember that there will still be exclusive WiiU modes to show off as well. And who knows, Sakurai might use the 3DS launch to gauge whether anything needs to be tweaked or changed.

I'm with you on that. Pokemon is a huge franchise for Nintendo and whether fans like it or not they can't can't say including a lot of them isn't justified. The Pokemon games still sell like crazy and X/Y is a clear indicator of that. For every one person that complains about the amount of Pokemon in Smash, I'm sure there will be a much larger number of people who will be happy. I, for one, am one of those people who say the more the merrier.

Yeah, i'm really hoping that learning from 3DS game can lead to an improved Wii U game. Especially if the Wii U game is easily patchable. Since there is no game-mode or online parity between the versions, the Wii U version's balancing can be totally different from the 3DS version, if they want it to be. Especially if the 3DS version isn't made to be patched easily.

Well, I don't know about that then. Only widespread sentiment I've been running into is the knee-jerk reaction that, somehow, we're only going to get one more Pokémon character when we had six in Brawl. That baffles me. But what you're talking about is even more ludicrous. Never mind the fact that Pokémon is probably the largest series in Nintendo's catalog apart from the Wii series and Mario. Even then, it might eclipse those two in some ways.

Oh man. Just heard about the disparate release dates.

Smart move...now I might actually buy the 3DS version too!

Even without the separate release dates, Smash Run ensured that I would get the 3DS version. City Trial was awesome.

I gotta hand it to Sakurai. Greninja was literally the last newcomer I was expecting. But still really cool.

Yeah, Greninja is fantastic addition to Smash. I really like the ninja vibe in Smash. I can't wait! :)

Yep, I can't wait to see what would be final roster in smash.

I don't think OT will die down a bit, and smash website wouldn't become super lame because of few reasons.

1. Most of us would playing with 3DS so we would ask each other for the battles.
2. They will have to reveal secret characters and stages for 3DS first then they will focus on Wii U features and stages.
3. We wouldn't complain because we will be busy with 3DS :P

The direct was actually so good, that nobody flipped over Midna
AND PONG
just being an AT xD
I don't mind about midna - happy she's in. I'm very sad about pong though- would've loved that as playable character.

Pong caught me off guard, but it's such a great addition.

Even though I'm really hyped and planning on getting the 3DS version, I feel that may be one reason on this version coming out first. Using the portable version feedback to fine-tune the main event.

Polar bears are Smash Run enemies, so it's safe to say that the Ice Climbers are returning. Each of the other 20+ enemies comes from a series already represented.

Oh wow you're right. I completely missed the Polar Bears the first time I watched the direct.

Honestly, I think the reason it'll come out first, is simply because it'll be ready first. The wii U version probably is more feature-rich and developing HD assets takes longer. That said, they COULD have purposefully delayed the 3DS version to prevent it from hurting wii U sales, so there may indeed be a reason why it's coming out so much sooner.

I completely missed that. Of course I never doubted the return of the Ice Climbers, but it's still nice to have a pseudo (Palutena) confirmation.

In the "custom movesets" part we see Kirby do a "ice breath" attack that looks very similar to the Ice Climbers neutral B attack

i called august :D i am still gonna stick to august :P. i think its funny the logos of the games one is fire the other is blue fire summer/winter its like they knew all along.

Color whatever 15 was such an amazing assist trophy.

Also interesting how some of the Assist Trophy characters shown off were popular B-List characters from the Super Smash Bros. Brawl days (Ashley, Dark Samus, Midna, Skull Kid). The only one I didn't see from that category is Krystal. Likewise, I think it's also pretty significant Isaac did not show up in the returning AT montage.

So....are we expecting a separate April direct?

I wouldn't be.
