Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

Like

..... Waluigi?

I admit I preferred Waluigi simply because to me he'd be another joke character and could sort of represent the spin-offs of the mario franchise: Kart, Tennis, Strikers, Golf, etc. Aside from him though we could take something like Kamek who plays a big role in a few games, I'm personally biased towards Geno as well, and even Paper Mario if you want to have something of a unique character who's more important than her. It's just a really weird inclusion overall and after her being shoehorned into 3D World, we now have her here too.

Of course her being in the sports titles makes sense, it was her inclusion in 3D World that made me feel that way. It was the next Mario platformer, it made no sense for her to appear given that it has nothing to do with the Galaxy games. They're giving a lot of importance to her and I just think it's odd.

Villager - 7/10
Wii Fit Trainer - 9/10 LOL She/He seems fun to use and totally WTH char
Mega Man - 8/10
Rosalina - 10/10 I always liked her so I was just talking with a friend that I would love to see her in Smash and BEHOLD!
Little Mac - 10/10 I always liked his character and was expecting him to be playable
Greninja - 6/10 Seems OK and cool but I still need to see more gameplay I was expecting another character reveal and not this Pokemon (I have played X&Y while they're good games maybe another Pokemon would have been better???)

Dont fully understand whats going on here but sweet

awesome, thanks.

In Melee you could change the trajectory of enemy projectiles with Marth's counter, effectively making them yours (KOing a foe with a "countered" Super Scope shot in team battles is just about the best thing ever). This looks similar. Maybe it's got something to do with that mechanic?

In SSBB countered projectiles would just vanish in a poof of smoke :/

Funny thing, this gif shows exactly why Dark Samus would work pretty well as a character, being also different enough from Samus. Well, guess there's always Smash Bros 5.
Yeah, model and animations look a little too good for an AT. Oh, what could have been...

My brother and me were looking for it when Sakurai was talking about Pit's Up Special change. It's hard to tell but it looked like it was there....
Well now I am sad. :(

sorry gamexplain but DaBoss already made your work a lot ago, and he did it better. Your post was really helpfull DaBoss.
Can you link to the post? I've enjoyed some of the move analysis from DaBoss that I've seen, would like to see more. Or I guess I can just not be lazy and go dig through the post history myself lol.

Also, Dark Samus was so good as an AT. Wish she was a character. Gave a lot of personality with that limp.

Thanks, but don't be rude like that. They've touched upon things I haven't noticed or mentioned. It takes a lot of work to make a video and edit it and stuff. If they were to do it the same way I do it, they probably would have finished before me.

Most of Greninja's moves are pretty straight forward. Only thing I'm a bit confused about is what special corresponds to what buttons since it can be interpreted in different ways.

I like all newcomers. Greninja definitely surprised me and has left me curious regarding other Pokemon representation (a grass starter? Mewtwo?). Jigglypuff will probably survive but who knows...

Favourite newcomers are Mega Man and Little Mac. Mega Man because of the character and Mac because he looks damn fun to play.

How was she shoehorned into 3D World? You have to beat the game to even play as her. Most people didn't know of her existence in the game upon purchasing it. All that she is is a fun unlockable bonus character.

Marth is doing his down air in the gif, not his counter.

<dalek>EXPLAIN</dalek>

Kidding, not really offended, but yours is one of the only posts I've seen not rating Megaman 10/10 (or higher) and I'm curious what your reasoning is.

Most of Greninja's moves are pretty straight forward. Only thing I'm a bit confused about is what special corresponds to what buttons since it can be interpreted in different ways.
I'm pretty sure his special moves are mapped as follows:

Standard - Water Shuriken
Side - Smokescreen (horizontal smoke teleport with kick)
Up - Aqua Jet (I don't know if this is what it's supposed to be, but the name matches)
Down - Substitute

How was she shoehorned into 3D World? You have to beat the game to even play as her. Most people didn't know of her existence in the game upon purchasing it. All that she is is a fun unlockable bonus character.

Shoehorned because why was she chosen over somebody like Wario, Yoshi, etc? Makes no sense in putting her there over characters more historically important than her.

Considering the fact that she's being shoehorned into a bunch of games, are you seriously going to tell me you don't see a parallel?

The only reason you say that she's "shoehorned" is because she was created after the SNES or N64 era. She had a large role in Galaxy 1, due to her sidestory and the ending, but she only had a cameo in Galaxy 2, as the "automatic play" feature and after gathering all stars. She was completely ignored by the NSMB series, and barely appeared in Mario spin offs back during the Wii. Mario Kart quickly picked her up, but most other series ignored her for quite a while.

She also didn't appear in 3d Land. Then she was added as a secret playable character in 3d World (and all secret worlds had a Galaxy theme to go with her), and only now has consistently started appearing in Mario Spin offs aside from Kart.

Shoehorned because why was she chosen over somebody like Wario, Yoshi, etc? Makes no sense in putting her there over characters more historically important than her.

Wario has only appeared in one mainline Mario game (the Mario 64 remake). I don't see why you'd expect him at all in that position. It's clear that they favor characters created in the main series itself over people from side games. You have a point about Yoshi, but Rosalina wasn't just randomly added there. The entire world map design of the secret worlds, and even the visual/design of quite a few original maps there clearly was based on the idea of a Galaxy homage. Rosalina was just part of that - even her unique point is just Mario's spin in Galaxy. Yoshi, in spite of appearing in Galaxy 2, wouldn't really fit in the same way. Also, in main games, Yoshi has only been playable as a completely standalone character in the Mario 64 remake too, so it's like he has a big tradition as a standalone character either.

Wow, I hadn't even noticed as I was too irritated by Samus to examine Zelda's new design properly. They literally just up'd every female character's breast size. That's awful. :/

orrrr they're just more detailed because of better hardware, got something against breasts man?
(im catchig up in the thread)

EXTERMINATE LOL

While I do like Megaman and everything related to the games (I played a lot of X while I was a kid and Battle Network too) I did not feel overly exited over him becoming playable in the game, maybe I'm weird..
But neverless I'm happy Nintendo took the character and he is in Smash is just that... I kinda expected it? I think he works much better in this game than Sonic

At this moment of reveals, My Present Mains:

1. Little Mac - I'm fully dedicated to learning this guy in and out. Punch Out is one of my favorite series' and I wanted Mac in since Melee. (Brawl AT was a crushing blow to the heart) I know I will be dying ALOT.... But I should be scoring just as much if not more with Mac.

2. Greninja - Oh hell yes... My starter became a full on Smash Contestant?! And he knows friggin Substitute??? Its on..... Its Onnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!

3. ZSS - Looks like she's packing alot more oophm this time.... (hehehe) But seriously, she looks like she hits harder and is more agile. I hope her Final Smash is awesome as that would round the package off nicely.

Looks like I'm all about speed. Speed and Agility. In Smash, I like to stay very mobile and active. I may not get to put massive damage on others as frequent as I would like but the trade off of not being hit is worth it. I often keep my distance and rush in when necessary and it looks like these 3 are designed for my playstyle.

New pac-man tin-foil-hat theory (by me):

Pac-man stage is going to be in the game. Maybe pac-man isn't, but his stage will be.

What's the most famous part about the stage other than the characters and pellets (and power pellets!)? The fact that you can wrap around once you go through the edge of the screen. Nintendo knows this, so they had to make code that allows characters to wrap around from left to right and right to left.

This is something NEW, not present in other smash games.
The 'Mario Bros.' stage SHOULD have allowed for this, but didn't.
stage26_080212a-l.jpg

You died if you hit the edge of the stage, making this not fun. While, in the original Mario Bros game, the wrap-around was a mechanic, it wasn't FAMOUS for this mechanic.

Pac-Man *IS* famous for this mechanic. Everyone knows that. Tons of pop culture references to it. Futurama refers to it in the episode 'raiders of the lost arcade.'

It's so famous, it has to be programmed into smash 4 for the pac-man stage.

Now, nintendo is thinking, well, what franchises do we have that also incorporate this mechanic, maybe we can implement it into stages from those franchises.

As they're going down the list, the come across this game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSKXykKsIiA
Balloon fight. This game, too, features this mechanic.

now look here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpT0gLC7-vU#t=286
What's that? Peach and samus wrap around? Well of course, balloon fight does that, but it isn't FAMOUS for that.

So that's my theory. The wrap-around mechanic was created because of the Pac-Man stage, and therefore implemented onto the balloon fight stage.

*Takes off tin-foil-hat*

I'll be here to quote myself when pac-man stage is revealed and has a wrap-around mechanic. Thanks :)

Down - Substitute
Yea, that's how I got it down too (and Smokescreen is a much better way of naming it than what I have).

But the bottom 3 could be rearranged and still work. Aqua Jet (GamXplain used Hydro Pump) could be Down and cause Greninja to move up. Smokescreen could be Up. And Substitute could be Side. Though there is the precedent that counters are Down. I don't really see anything as 100% till it is 100% unless it is obvious.

But isn't always the recovery moves UP B?
That would be kind of messy to my muscular memory LOL

I really like that he is really fast using all those dissapearing tricks and everything

I want one of those plushies so bad.

Villager - 9/10

I love Animal Crossing and this character screams my name. His moveset looks fun and that's all I needed to be sold.

WFT - 7/10

Seems pretty bland design wise, her moveset looks great but generally just not interested too much in her.

Mega Man - 6/10

I don't like his style of play and I'm not the biggest MM fan out there.

Little Mac - 10/10

I fricking love this guy and his moveset looks fantastic. Landing them combo punches will feel SO good!

Rosalina - 7/10

Pretty meh on her, but the Luma interests me, so we'll see how that pans out.

Greninja - 4/10

Couldn't care less for it. I had zero hype when I saw him and his moveset looks average. Pokemon just don't really do it for me.

For Pokemon representation, I feel like we're gonna get Jigglypuff and Mewtwo with Ivysaur and Squirtle getting cut. And I'm quite happy with Greninja's inclusion.
He's essentially the Charizard of Gen 6.

And I also gotta say I get a kick out of watching people's live reactions to the newcomer reveals. Some are so funny.
This one being one of my favorites.

If that stage didn't kill you when you went off the sides how could a match ever possibly end?

orrrr they're just more detailed because of better hardware, got something against breasts man?
(im catchig up in the thread)

I'm not gonna weigh in on the actual debate, but I would quickly like to point out that increased resolution is different from a larger bust.

In other words, more detail =/= bigger, and the poster you quoted was complaining about an apparent and unnecessary increase in size.

More detail means higher res textures and more polygons. Bigger just means they pushed those polygons out a little further.

If that stage didn't kill you when you went off the sides how could a match ever possibly end?

It wraps around left to right and right to left. You can still fall through the water (in balloon fight) and get knocked off the top of the screen.

They could also implement an acceleration check when hitting the left or right edge, where if you're going above a certain speed (clearly you've been smashed), it counts as a KO.

But isn't always the recovery moves UP B?
That would be kind of messy to my muscular memory LOL

I want one of those plushies so bad.

They're limited edition, I think I remember getting one for 2500¥.

You can find Chinese knock offs that look similar for a ton cheaper. I guess they look similar except for maybe different fur and stitching.

We don't know if Smokescreen can allow Greninja to go in different directions, but I imagine it will. It could be like Sheik's recovery with a similar effect to Meta Knight's Down B.

And many characters have recovery moves on things other than Up B. Meta Knight is the best example of this where every special could act like a recovery.

If that stage didn't kill you when you went off the sides how could a match ever possibly end?

For the Mario stage, you would have to knock them over to the ceiling. This would be fun in a Hyrule Temple sort of way. Also would be really amusing to knock people hard left or right and watch them fly across the screen multiple times lol.

doesn't like=shoehorned in
you should know how this works

Way to put words in my mouth. I enjoy the character herself in the one game she was important in: Super Mario Galaxy. In the sports titles I have no problem with her, I just find it odd to see her in Smash and in a mainline title.

I didn't know about the secret worlds so that's interesting, guess that sort of makes a bit more sense now at least.

You forget that Wario came about because of a main game, I believe he was created in one of the Gameboy Mario games as the antagonist in two or so and then became his own character. His roots still are as one of Mario's rivals though.

True enough, still to me I feel like there were other Mario characters who should have been included before her in Smash. Doesn't matter now though, like I said before I feel like she was shoehorned but I don't despise her as a character or her moveset.

My favorite shown newcomer would be Greninja.

I was a Sheik main in melee but her nerfs in brawl just made me dislike the character.
Greninja looks to have a similar stealth appeal and it's my favorite of the 3 starter evolutions.

Funny thing, this gif shows exactly why Dark Samus would work pretty well as a character, being also different enough from Samus. Well, guess there's always Smash Bros 5.

Hopefully they'll at least add the look as an alternate costume for Samus.

Shoehorned because why was she chosen over somebody like Wario, Yoshi, etc? Makes no sense in putting her there over characters more historically important than her.

Considering that she brought with her the Galaxy-specific Air Spin ability to 3D World, it makes sense she would be brought in because she brings something unique to the table. If historical characters get preference in every single game over new characters, least they be considered "shoehorned in", then we'll never see any new characters. She didn't bump off any of the original Mario Bros 2 cast, and imagining someone else in her place as a bonus is just fantasy booking. Besides, she's been coexisting besides Wario and Yoshi and co in Mario Kart and Smash as an addition to the roster without "bumping someone off", unless one simply perceives any instance of Rosalina as being in liue of [INSERT FAVORITE CHARACTER HERE].
