Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

That's part of the game though. It's like with Pokémon. You could have survived a hit and put in a final blow to the opponent, but the opponent manages to get a critical hit thanks to random chance and defeats you. It's part of the mechanics of the game.

2 words.

Double Team.

Don’t see why you’re talking about Shulk. It’s obvious he's not making it into the game.

Sakurai is clearly going for the protagonist of Monolith Soft’s new game X!

I like Shulk, but the Monado is the reason i want him in.
Plus, he can bring some amazing music with a stage with him.

He should be in simply because he's the main character of a new Nintendo IP that has a sequel coming later this year, it would definitely help make X much more visible to people with a character from it or related to it in some way being in.

If Sakurai is able to have/retain/add characters from dead or dying series' (You all know which ones) then a series that is actually active with something of a future should definitely get a representative. Of course this is Sakurai the person who after 3 installments in the SSB series just gave Metroid a 2nd (Dubious one at that) representative. Even after the series has had at least one entry each generation (Barring the N64) with 2 of them being among some of the highest revered Nintendo games of all vs Starfox having 3 representatives while being a more or less dead IP. So i wouldn't be surprised if Shulk doesn't make an appearance at all.

If Ridley is a stage hazard boss, Sakuria would've confirmed it during direct. But for some reason he didn't.

I don't see the logic behind that. Just because you show something, doesnt mean you got to confirm it.

He showed us a shadow of something that might be Ridley...its as possible that he hasnt showed Ridley because he doesnt want to give away how you fight him as its possible to Ridley being playable...

Pic of the day. Samus and Zero Suit Samus!! How will she match up with her new jet boots?

:o neat. freakin jet boots.

I love the Samusesses.

Have been looking at the confirmed character list and deciding who to play as is Snake doesn't make it back.

Right now in no order it's
Wii Fit Trainer(How can I say no to getting fit
Little Mac (Strong character with speed even if his air is weak)
Zero Suit Samus (Because of Buffs and being solo since I didn't link her Smash)
Pit ( Because of buffs and after playing Kid Icarus Uprising)

I dropped Rosalina since seeing how she plays I know I wouldn't be good with that sort of character.

Still my biggest issue is I have no real connection to any of these characters. Which goes a long way for me getting good with someone.

Okay, so I finished seeing the entire direct. Here are my thoughts:

- Do not like the idea of character separation (i.e. Pokemon trainer > Charizard; Samus > ZSS; Zelda > Shiek) Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but since Sakurai's being a jerk and said that the character count will the same as in Brawl, every old character split in two, is one new character that will never see the light of day.
- The new final destination looks pretty fucking sweet. However, I don't know if I like the space motif more than the vortex/wormhole thing that Brawl and Melee had.
- Gray Ninja (or whatever the hell his name is) seems kinda neat, but he's a lame water type. Surely they could have picked a cooler, more powerful pokemon, right? Or at least one with a better element that fricken H2O, am I right?
- Custom attacks. Seriously why is no one talking about this?! These have the potential to make SSB4 more of a revolution instead of a mere evolution for Smash Bros.
- The Yellow Devil idea seems kinda cool, but he takes up most of the platform. I don't know if that would make it fun or just cumbersome.
- Why does Twilight Princess Zelda summon Phantom Hourglass Dark nuts? :/
- No mention of single player modes for the Wii-U version. Boo.

Yeah, Xenoblade is a cool game, but I don't want those jorts + techno boots + vest + choker + mecha turtleneck anywhere near smash. What a complete trainwreck. Put in Isaac if you need a Niche RPG character.

Characters from RPGs tend to translate the worst anyway.
Pikachu, Ness, Lucas, Marth etc... seem to make the transition just fine. If amything rpg characters are much easier to adapt as they have numerous attacks compared to mario, who basically jumps, wolf and falco who fly in arwings, zelda who you typically only see assist in one fight per game at best etc...

Actually that's not an issue, as samurai considered those formes separate characters in Brawl concerning the number of fighters

Because she has the TP look but she ISN'T TP Zelda as identity, but a character that encompasses most zeldas of the series. To begin with, she shouldn't have Nayru's Love, Din's Fire and Farore's Wind as those are OoT techniques, so ST phantoms are not a big issue, considering also that his appearance is changed to fit the TP style

You know Samus and ZSS counted as two characters in Brawl right? Splitting them didn't change that. If anything Pkmn Trainer -> Charizard decreased the count from three to one.

-I don't think Sakurai has ever said that IIRC. Edit: the above link doesn't necessarily say that Smash 4 will have the same number of characters as Brawl, could be either less or more - he only mentioned that they've 'reached the limit' but we don't know what that limit is.

-Mewtwo will probably be back, and Greninja's one of the coolest Pokemon in X and Y anyway.

-There's a thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=799169

Sakurai said last year that SSB4 will have the same character count as Brawl did.

Maybe he counted the character transformations separately when he said that?

Regardless, I'm glad characters don't transform. Gives everyone the same number of moves.

Is this an exaggeration? I genuinely don't know how someone could think this given how many poorly designed characters there are out there.
I'm not sure how should I put it. One of the worst in notable Japanese games from major studios? One of the worst protagonists? One of the worst from supposedly good games?

Let's put it this way: his design is worse than or at least as bad as both Tidus and Vaan.

Shulk is not even close to being the worst-designed JRPG character of all time.

Well if this is your bar for what's bad. Also I assume that this isn't a character people actually like or want in freaking Smash.

I think I worked out how the 3DS HUD is going to work:

n3ds__supersmashbros_fieldsmash_carryingitem_screen_01__large.jpg

It'll be placed on the bottom screen and there'll be four slots, like you can see for Mario here. It'll say P1, P2, etc. and in the little box underneath, there'll be the player's actual name, for example, SuperSah, seen in this screenshot here:

n3ds__supersmashbros_fieldsmash_interimresult_screen_02__large.jpg

The boxes will display the art of the character they're playing as, and the percentage meter will be displayed towards the top, seen in the original screenshot I posted above. So this means the HUD on the top screen will be clean and will allow for a "bigger" field of view, however I can see there being an option to have it like the Wii U HUD.

Sakurai counts Smash Bros Brawl as having 39 characters, not 35. He always counted the transformations with entirely new movesets as separate characters, doesn't matter if they take a spot in the character selection screen or not. 1 moveset = 1 character.

Sakurai said last year that SSB4 will have the same character count as Brawl did.

I wouldn't worry about that. He said basically the same thing during the Melee -> Brawl transition.

"Sorry. I'm not very smart but I can't tell a lie so I'm just going to write it. As for the previous game's characters, some of them will disappear. Definitely.

For the last game, we struggled to assemble 26 characters. We tried really hard and unintentionally reached that number. But, although you'll see characters from the last game, this time, on a significant scale, they will be remade. It is this sort of thing.

For argument's sake, no matter how much staff there is, with just manpower we can't just put in everything, and as my own job does not decrease, there is a limit.

That's a translation of one of his answers to Japanese fans in the pre-Dojo Japanese Brawl site.

I still can't get over the fact that they chose the MM2 sawblade as MegaMan's icon instead of his iconic helmet.
It just looks so out-of-place to me..

Here's a quick mockup of some potential helmet icons.

r0NmokF.png

Does it really look that bad? My first thought it might have been that the hemlet doesn't give a distinct silhouette, but that's not the case. They could also make use of negative space to give the shapes some outlines.
That's not a sawblade. It's a gear. Cuz he's a robut

I like your graphics though

Isn't this pre-Namco Bandai though?

Nope, that announcement happened at E3, long after Sakurai confirmed he was working with Namco.

Actually that's not an issue, as samurai considered those formes separate characters in Brawl concerning the number of fighters

Sakurai always says stuff to keep people's expectations in check.

Later Sakurai also stated he'd rather not cut anyone/hasn't had to do so yet.

Huh, didn't know that was how it worked. Well shit if that's the case, then never mind. Especially as BGBW said, sticking with Charizard frees up two additional slots, so woo!

Sakurai always says stuff to keep people's expectations in check.

Later Sakurai also stated he'd rather not cut anyone/hasn't had to do so yet.

This was from a question regarding bringing back all previous characters of the series in Smash 3ds/WiiU:

“I can answer that: no. We don’t have the time to fully recreate every single character who’s been in Smash Bros at this point.”

“Adding new characters is not a simple addition – it’s really multiplication. The amount of work, adding a character is multiplied and becomes bigger and bigger as you go. We can’t because of the amount of work it takes. However, I do believe I understand that each character has its own set of fans out there who really like that character.”

“So we’re not going to cut characters out of the way, we’re going to put in as many characters as we can, we really want to do that, because it’s good for the fans and good for all of us. But in the event that we do have to cut some characters, I’d like to apologise in advance to those fans

Keeping in mind that the development of this game started by porting Brawl, the last paragraph does make it sound like no one (from Brawl) had been cut yet there. But, it's all pretty vague anyway. Still, compare to his answer about cutting characters between Melee and Brawl, where he outright said that characters would certainly be cut.

ke the space motif more than the vortex/wormhole thing that Brawl and Melee had.
- Gray Ninja (or whatever the hell his name is) seems kinda neat, but he's a lame water type. Surely they could have picked a cooler, more powerful pokemon, right? Or at least one with a better element that fricken H2O, am I right?

To be fair, we didn't have much in the way of a Water user before, barring Squirtle who may not return. Also, Greninja has a second type: Dark.

Also, here's a source for Sakurai saying that Brawl has 39 characters (which means that he counts the transformations as standalone characters). This was after Brawl's launch, June 2008, years before the new Smash Bros games were in development.

http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/4964/sakurai-cut-characters-from-smash-bros/

"What happened in the next year and a half was that we distilled the game down, worked out which ideas we had time to include and which we didn't. Sadly, we had to trim out many great concepts just to keep within the time contraints. I had a lot more characters, for example.. but sadly I can't discuss which ones didn't make it."

However, Sakurai said he wouldn't just create another game to use up these characters. "There are 39 characters in the game this time around and just adding a few more wouldn't be enough to justify a new game in my opinion; I'd have to draw a line in the sand and have a new approach to make it worthwhile. As long as the fans enjoy it, though, that's what matters and in the distant future, I guess that might be something I have to consider."

I don't see how you can find Shulk poorly designed.

Most of the cast of Xenoblade is entirely inoffensive, and sort of come off as bland because of it. Boring, maybe, but not bad.

My reasons for doubting Shulk is that he doesn't seem to be the main playable character in X. I don't think one game is enough for him to be "worthy" of Smash Bros., especially not a recent one unless it sold like crazy. (I'm sure someone is going to post a picture to prove me wrong.) Then again, we know nothing about X, so it could be possible that he plays a big role in that game too.
