Flying Hamster II Kickstarter ($150k goal) - RPG inspired by Wonder Boy/Monster World

I wonder if you can change character anywhere, or if it's like Wonderboy 3 with a fixed location.

Edit: Oh, the frog changed into a snake on the fly in the video, so I guess you can.

WTF? How did I miss this? Backing ASAP. I love the Monster World games and all games like it. I need this game in my life. The awesome graphics are just the icing in the cake.

1.7 million downloads and still needing Kickstarter? Seems to me they were in need of some pocket money instead.

I was thinking that as well.

The first Flying Hamster is a mobile title and unfortunately that probably carries a stigma with a lot of idiot "gamers" out there.

Actually, it debuted as a PSP Mini, and is also available on PS3.

And it's a REALLY GOOD GAME -- if you like shmups and don't mind the cute, it's absolutely one of the most polished and genuinely fun cute-em-ups out there. Game Atelier is good peoples, and I really want to see this succeed -- it looks amazing. I hope they reach their goal, if nothing else. I backed it, and I don't back much (basically just this and La-Mulana 2, at this point).

These enemies are adorable :)

Game looks nice (the first one is okay, but not all that great), but this isn't going to hit its goal unless something amazing happens.

Yeah, I've become disillusioned towards backing successful kickstarter games (or ones that are on track to be successful) as the developers can't guarantee that the higher-tier incentives will carry over to Steam (Double Fine's utterly piss-poor handling of Broken Age's soundtrack vindicated my passive perspective), but I absolutely love the Wonder Boy inspiration on display here and will back it if necessary.

I will increase my pledge if necessary, but I'm still hopeful it will catch on soon. I think their kickstarter page looks great. Good video showing gameplay, lots of information and art showing what they want to do with the game. I think they're just failing at getting the word out and they need to work more with this if they want their kickstarter to succeed. The game looks good, but has only 418 backers. They need to fix that.

This really needs to get a mention on something like 8-4 Play. This seems like a game that would be right up some of their alleys. Would hate to see all this Monster World-style charm go to waste.

It looks like Game Atelier made most of their iOS games free:

Flying Hamster - https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/flying-hamster/id403533758?mt=8
Flying Hamster HD - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flying-hamster-hd/id408869936?mt=8

I don't have an iOS device, so there may be IAP.

I feel like this is where being a sequel to Flying Hamster hurts visibility. That was a handheld/mobile game, and the majority of big western sites couldn't care less about those platforms, with the mobile dedicated ones turning their noses because the campaign isn't promising them a release.

It does carry a stigma. Maybe they should have gone with a prominent subtitle like the Elder scrolls or Wonder Boy.

I would back this instantly if it meant I got a Vita version.
The reality is on Steam this game would never see the light of day, but I would play the fuck out of it on Vita.

I really, really want to see this game on Vita. Unfortunately, it looks like such a goal is very far off :/ I'll back this if it ever reaches or is close to such a goal

Voted for:

Michiru Yamane
New worlds
co-op mode

PC

I was considering "more side quests" but my mind translated it to "more filler content"

Yes, for me this game scream "PLAY ME ON PSVita !!!!" with all those vibrant colors ....

Vote adequately in their poll :p

I downloaded Flying Hamster HD and SunFlowers. Both games are full versions and no IAPs. (SunFlowers also has a "FREE" version with IAP but those items appear to be free as well for now.)

As I feared, it doesn't seem like this will achieve the initial goal :( Which I guess means handheld versions are not happening - sad because after PC, the systems with the most votes are Vita and 3DS.

Nah, I think it's time to worry. Kickstarters tend to have their best days in the first week so making only about 10-15% of their total goal after nearly a week is a very bad sign. It's very rare to see a project pull out a win after this weak of a start.

It looks great, but 150k is a lot..

I think you have an unrealistic idea of what games cost to make.

Let's go over the numbers:

10% of that money goes to Kickstarter and Amazon, which leaves $135,000.
The kickstarter includes physical incentives that cost money to produce. Let's assume those cost another 10%. (Some kickstarters end up spending much more than 10% on backer rewards - 10% is not out of the question.) That leaves $120,000.
They list 6 full-time staff members, plus a marketing consultant. I don't know how much the marketing consultant is being paid, so we'll leave him out for now. Among the rest of the staff members, we have $20k for each of them. The game is coming out mid-2015 at the soonest, so that's at least a year that that money has to stretch. So that's $20k a year for each of these employees to live on.

Again, that's leaving out a lot of costs. There's the marketing consultant, and there are other business costs that that money has to pay for. (Note how I'm assuming there's no office? That costs money.) Each of those eats into the money. That $20k/year is a really unrealistic high-end estimate based on the other project expenses.

$150k is actually quite a low amount of money to make a game at this level of complexity.

I saw that Kotaku covered the game today, but that looks to have done nothing. : / Yeah, at this point I think it's too late. Funding is so slow that I get the sense that some of the people that are interested aren't backing due to it not being successful.

It could probably use some more exposure. I didn't hear about it until now and I've never backed anything on Kickstarter, but I'll definitely donate to this soon.

WOW. Big fan of Monster World here and this looks so good. And Michiru Yamane? Backed without hesitation.

Too bad it's looking bad for their campaign... :(

Participated in the survey and it looks like there is quite a demand for Vita (almost 50% of the votes when I finished). I think that there is quite a group of backers who back a lot of Vita games and the same goes for Wii U and Linux.

Having some of these in the initial group of platforms might have helped the early traction of the KS.

For PC backers I think you need to have a beloved franchise or be a well known PC developer. The Flying Hamster franchise is neither (PSP, Vita and iOS... that might actually scare of PC backers).

I expect this to land at 60k.

Indeed. Like most game Kickstarter campaigns, they probably aren't asking for enough. $150k isn't very much at all for the size and complexity of the game and their current team.

Certainly they should be budgeting more for their PS4/Xbone tier.

Need to get promoted over the Mighty No. 9 kickstarter backers.

As much as people speak about wanting fresh 2D games, you get one that's VERY well done such as this (obviously many levels more complex than any of their other games), and yet people aren't chompin' at the bit to Donate?! *sigh*

Flying Hamster was probably one of the most legitimately-made "Cute'em-Ups" to ever be crafted outside of Japan. As solidly as they hit the mark with that design, the fact they want to do a Monster World-inspired game is like a dream. Why isn't this zooming to it's initial Goal?! :-/

I can't believe this isn't funded already. I'm sure RPS covering it would help immensely but this is probably too gamey a game for their tastes.

I've been trying mad hard to download the original shmup', but I keep getting an error on PSN. Ugh! I want to be ready for when this never comes out, lol!
