Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

Metal Gear Rising definitely seems like Sakurai's type of game, so I'd wager he has a lot of love for cyborg Raiden. Honestly, if it's an option of the table (playable cyborg Raiden), I'd accept him in an instant. But he should be in addition to Snake, not replacing him (even though I like MGR much better than any MGS game).

MGS2 Raiden as an alternate costume would be nice if he was to get in.

What hasn't been suggested on Miiverse at this point?

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: Sakurai used Cut!

It's super effective!
NeoGAF fainted!

I'd like to chip in my thought on characters being cut:

I don't think anyone will be cut.

Even though that directly conflicts the words of the man himself, you're sticking with this?

You should have known that wouldn't happen after Young Link wasn't cut after Melee/was modified into Toon Link.

If I was to bet on any single character getting cut (besides Snake), it would be Wolf.

Toon Link's existence actually makes me genuinely salty.

Maybe they gave the "flap and blast fire" move to another fire-breathing winged dragon...

Who keeps playing that damned Journey song?!

I don't enter EVERY day, but from my third party list I am pretty sure that I was the first to suggest Bub from Bubble Bubble and L from tetris

To enter crazy-idea land, what if there were actually a Tetris character that could dynamically change shape into any of the Tetris pieces to do different attacks?

What hasn't been suggested on Miiverse at this point?

I haven't been following the Miiverse community at all, but I really hope that for all these people wanting Takamaru, some love is also being given to Nintendo's original fighting game character, Skapon

God I would love to see them manage his animations and moveset. Konaniran!

Wouldn't be surprised if it happened considering how Sakurai managed to get several tracks in Brawl.

That's not that surprising though; Track A was based on Korobeiniki, an old Russian folk tune in the public doman, and Track B was made by Nintendo.

Whereas to base a stage on Tetris, they'd have to get the IP rights. Not that they couldn't of course, but I doubt they even had to contact the Tetris company for the Brawl songs.

Constantly-changing landscape, hazards falling from the sky. Would be novelty stage, not played on often.

While I agree it would be a novelty stage, the blocks needn't be hazards; why not jump right through them?

What's the verdict on the speed of the game? From the direct it seemed faster than brawl to me, around Project M's pace.

It's looking much snappier than Brawl when taken at just face value (character movement and weight, attacks and combos), but until we know how higher level things work (most notably air dodges) we won't be able to guess how fast things will be through the pace of a match.

FWIW, I don't think it'll be anywhere near as fast as Melee/Project M with everything accounted for, but it'll get close to the latter with its own design direction.

I really so badly want a tetris stage in smash bros it would be incredible

One of the reasons why I support Panel de Pon's Lip making the jump to a playable character is to finally see a amalgamation of character designed around directly influencing someone's positioning and to see how zany a stage taking elements from Nintendo's Puzzle League/puzzle game heritage could be.

I'd like to chip in my thought on characters being cut:

I don't think anyone will be cut.

And I think Mewtwo will return.

All of the characters that were in Brawl were rather unique. And certainly, the trend with SSB4 is to make all preexisting characters even more unique. I think Sakurai would rather find a way to surprise us and delight us by keeping characters than cutting them. He put a lot of hard work into those characters and they're now timeless in a sense because of their appearance in Smash -- regardless of how "relevant" they may be in other games (or on Nintendo systems) in the here and now, they're established "Smash Bros." characters the moment they appear in Smash. And in general, I think Sakurai wants to make this Smash bigger and better, which includes pumping up the roster while diversifying the individual characters and providing for better balance.

And here are some thoughts on certain characters:

- Ivysaur and Squirtle: They still represent important Pokémon concepts -- the basic stage and second-stage Pokémon -- and complete the Kanto trio, which mind you was a big part of Pokémon X/Y, since you got to choose one in addition to your Kalos starter. Additionally, Ivysaur is unique as a four-legged fighter, and Squirtle, while a Water-type like Greninja, has a move-set all his own.

- R.O.B. and Mr. G&W: Both incredibly unique characters. Both incredibly clever ways to represent Nintendo's history, which means they'll always be relevant to Smash Bros. Also, staff at Bandai-Namco included Mr. G&W in their whiteboard drawing during SSB4's pre-production.

- Ike: Unlike Roy, Ike headlined two console Fire Emblems and was very unique with his hard-hitting style and volcanic flame motif. I can see them retaining Ike -and- adding Chrom. I suppose it's also possible Chrom could inherit an altered take on Ike's style, but I think Sakurai is clever enough to include all three, with unique aesthetics and mechanics.

- Snake: I can't imagine a situation where Kojima would say, "No, you can't use Snake," nor can I see Konami turning down the free advertising. It doesn't matter if MGSV or GZ doesn't come to WiiU, just as it didn't matter that MGS4 didn't come to Wii (although MGS4 references still appeared in Brawl). Actually, since the 3DS got Snake Eater, MGS is more relevant to Nintendo now than it was during Brawl. But that's not the point. Snake is a huge gaming "celebrity" and a truly one-of-a-kind character in tone and playstyle. He plays unique, which seems to be the most important reason for character's inclusion in Sakurai's eyes. Also, there was that recent incident where Raiden's VA either misspoke or let slip that he voiced Raiden for Smash... which if not a mistake, probably indicates an Assist Trophy, and thus Snake's return.

- Mewtwo: Cut only due to time restraints in Brawl, I think Mewtwo will return because Sakurai was coy when asked about it at E3, and honestly, the Pokémon Company wants to push Mewtwo now because he starred in a recent movie and the new anime and also received not one but TWO Mega Evolutions in X/Y, even appearing in those game's title screen attract reels. I think he'll come back, with his Y Mega Evolution, as well.

I like your thinking, but I think you're a bit too optimistic. For one, the development for this game went way faster than I think anyone expected, which makes me think that they had to cut something somewhere. SSE is a big one, but I don't think it's enough, and everything else seems buffed in quantity and quality, so I wouldn't be surprised to see some cuts for what he sees as unnecessary.

Characters like Wolf or Lucas are still probable, of course, but I'd be shocked if Snake made it back; I think Sakurai is too catious about overcrowding with 3rd party characters for that. Ivysaur and Squirtle, likewise, probably can't stand on their own. Mewtwo would be cool, but with all the Pokemon we've seen so far he seems unlikely. And I think, despite his interesting gameplay, Ike is so easily replaced that I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he didn't return. ROB too. Despite his uniqueness it just feels like so few people care that, if someone had to be cut, he would be on the chopping block.

So, yeah, it sucks, but I'm pretty confident that somebody will be cut for this game.

are you sure, I don't think it's possible to have more ledge-snapping than Brawl ;)

I think Squirtle has enough of a unique moveset to be a standalone, though Ivysaur might get moved for another grass type. There's no way R.O.B. & G&W are leaving, the movesets are too unique to be removed. Ike might be moved for Chrom, and Mewtwo will probably come back as a surprise. Snake just depends on Kojima and if they worked a deal out.

If Snake isn't revealed at or by E3, he's not in the game. He would be a great character to reveal in the conference/Direct, same for Mewtwo.

I agree about Snake, but I disagree about Mewtwo.

I think if Mewtwo is in the game Sakurai will keep him secret. Mewtwo is a perfect secret character.

Actually, they did require some form of permission from The Tetris Company for both songs. Credits list both tracks as courtesy of The Tetris Company.

If a Megaman X tune has to be in is this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JA2AUKr758

The Megaman X series has so many god tier songs, It would be really hard to pick one.

Personally, the one you linked plus

Megaman X2 - Opening Stage

Megaman X3 - Doppler Stage 1

Megaman X3 - Opening Stage

Megaman X4 - X's Opening Stage theme

You know what would be even cooler? A mix of all the opening stage themes from the X series, in one song. The opening stage themes are some of the most consistent songs in the series, being great in all the games, and having all of them in one mix would be great.

I'd guess only because they are literally called Tetris: Type A and Tetris: Type B. As far as I know, there is no reason they'd need to contact them otherwise, unless they have shared ownership of the original's assets (which I doubt, because The Tetris Company wasn't even a thing then), and going by memory of the book, Game Over, that almost certainly wasn't an element.

Oh yeah, just realized PotD returns today!

also, random thought: what if the leak about 48 total characters+4 cuts turns out to be true

I'd be happy with 48 characters. I don't want there to be any cuts, but I wouldn't complain if there were less than 5, unless Wolf was cut.

Listening to Xenoblade's soundtrack right now and my desire for Shulk in the game (or at least a Xenoblade stage) is higher than ever. So goddamn much potential

Actually, according to the US Patent and Trademark Office, The Tetris Company owns the trademark for Korobeiniki when used digitally in a video game. Therefore Nintendo did require legal permission to use the song.

I honestly don't see anyone getting cut. Mainly because Namco is helping out and they've been good at keeping everyone in their games. While I know this is Sakurai's gig he even said he was trying everything to not to cut anyone and i'm sure Namcos helped out with that.
