Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

Sceptile is also a gen 3 starter and all signs point to a remake in the works. Plus the sanctity of grass/water/fire must be upheld.

Sanctity is a dimension that Sakurai's using to make character decisions?

I agree with several others on here recently. Charizard has been a popular pokemon since the early days and was given renewed life with his special Mega Evolution in X and Y. Greninja makes sense as the rep for the newest generation, giving us a spread of historically classic characters and a modern fan favorite. There is some sense in adding a grass starter, but not if none of them are particularly popular and I hardly think it would be considered a requirement for a fighting game roster.

but why gen 3 in particular?
that part doesn't make sense
It's very possible that Game Freak is actively working on remakes and might want a Gen III rep in for advertisement purposes.

Perhaps more importantly in this case, Sceptile is really the only viable grass starter we could have. Venusaur would be redundant with Charizard, Meganium would be awkward, Torterra could work but would be a bit redundant with Lucario as the Gen IV rep, Serperior would be awkward and is effectively deconfirmed by Snivy probably being a Poke Ball Pokemon, and Chesnaught would be redundant with Greninja.

If they want a grass starter to even out the trio - and I hope they do because it would be just terrible if they didn't - Sceptile is pretty much the only choice.

So I didn't know who this Sceptile was that everyone spoke of, so I googled it.

I then googled a list of every grass-type Pokemon.

Conclusion: starter grass type Pokemon have pretty shitty evolutions outside of Ivysaur.
I'm sorry, but Torterra proves you objectively wrong.

X and Y reference literally every generation (most moreso than Gen III), and the guy who makes the facilities comment later goes on to state that he wasn't speaking of any past region.

It's fine to want remakes of games, but the zealousness Hoenn fans show for the certainty on something that hasn't at all been alluded to happening is one of the more bizarre things about the current Pokemon fandom.

Everyone expects a Gen 3 remake soon. Also, for all we know Sceptile has a Mega evolution in the works. Plus I think most people consider Sceptile the best 'fit' for smash as far as grass starters go.

The last time everyone was expecting a Gen 3 remake we got Black and White version 2.

The last time everyone was expecting a Gen 3 remake we got Black and White version 2.

Which is really weird because Dive and all that other evidence. Personally, it is stretching it, but it's a pretty safe bet at the same time. With two remakes under their belt already, you would think GF would remake Gen 3 eventually.

Without a Gen 3 remake/Mega evolution for Sceptile, his inclusion makes almost no sense. If for some reason there is a Gen 3 remake in the works with a Mega Sceptile, (and we know GF/Nintendo picks the pokemon for SSB) it makes perfect sense. But that's a lot of assumptions and I wouldn't hold my breath on it.

Stop using anime for references guys. Ivysaur makes as much sense as Squirtle and Charizard in Trainer's lineup back in Brawl.

Still an odd choice for an event Mega-evolution considering all the other alternatives.

It might not even be an event, since they just like pulling the two out of the vault fairly often. Still popular with kids, I suppose.

I'm just saying, it seemed more likely that the next region we're hitting up is something brand new if we're going based on "hints" in the game.

It makes me very happy that some people are recognizing the greatness that is Torterra. Seriously though, if we do get a grass starter it should be him. Enough with the bipedal pokemon.

Greninja being in is pretty sweet though.

I doubt it since the one thing Sakurai has been doing is forcing Smash characters to walk up straight (Browser, Yoshi, etc.) If we're getting another Smash Pokemon character, it's going to be Blaizken, Mewtwo or another really popular Pokemon, that can stand on two feet.

If we're talking Gen 3, the only grass type we need is Ludicolo.

Would the RAM needs be more or less than the full secondary movesets needed for transformations?

More. All assets associated with character moves are required to be in RAM to be accessed quickly enough for gameplay. Transformations swapped out the current character entirely and loaded the new one from the disc on demand. There's a decent chance that they were axed this time around solely because HD assets have ballooned the data size of a single character past the point where they can be efficiently loaded mid-match.
