Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

I was thinking about how great a Bionicle character would be in Smash Bros. Bohrok assist trophy, disc launcher item, one of the Toa or the chronicler as a character, that would be great.

...

Why did you have to kill it, Lego? :-(
You guys sure do go through these threads fast.
It's because I always get SmashGAF confused with PokeGAF.
Let's be real Lucas > Ness.
As a character in Mother, yes.

As a Smash character? You better respect the Yo-Yo.

Which is like, the lamest possible reason a character could be included. Kojima was like, "Hey, Saka-samurai, I want to play Smash with my kid!" And Sakurai's response was like, "Yo dawg, a fan request? I know you like Fill-in-the-blank Snake, so I put a Snake in my Smash!"

Because really, that's what it came down to - and why does that fan request get any more attention than any of the other of thousands of people begging for their favorite character to get in? If the answer is because those people aren't friends with Sakurai, that's... not good.

I can think of two acceptable responses to this

#1 - I don't understand how it's not good to prioritize the request of a friend within the industry, especially when it's the kind of fanservice bone people will appreciate anyway

#2 -

Says who? So Sakurai's sworn duty is now to give the same consideration to John Doe who wants his favorite Pokemon in, than that of his friends who's also an extremely successful and influential game designer?

I hate the term "entitled gamer", but really... Developers aren't machines enslaved to their audience's whims.
Yeah, I honestly feel it's better that we have a developer who makes unexpected choices based on any number of reasons than one beholden to the audience's whims.
Hard to make an ugly animal look like a good pokemon without making the animal no longer identifiable.
Poor Lanturn. :-( After Chinchou perfectly captured the weirdness of deep sea fish while also being cute, it was disappointing to get an angler fish that looked like this.

ani171.gif

Hoping for a split male-female evolution that makes up for it.

There's also the fact that Sakurai needs permission to use characters anyway, so getting an industry request actually completes a step in the process, unlike a fan request.

Love the new thread title!

Also, I am SO glad I didn't stay up for PotD last night lol. I guess it's time I finally get back to a normal sleep schedule :P

Okay, so the recent Nintendo Direct revved up my fanboy engine. Like with Ganondorf and Andy before, here's a proposal for Isaac!

ISAAC

n0JHPQQ.jpg

Golden Sun has a battle system that revolves around the unique Djinn mechanic. Adepts can have Djinn set to them, empowering their stats and abilities. They can also use the Djinn for various moves, putting them on standby and losing their equip bonuses. However, standby Djinn can also be used to cast devastating summons in battle, at which point they'll be on cooldown before being reset to their original Adept.

Because this Djinn cycle is so unique and defining of Golden Sun's gameplay, I figured it should be central to Isaac's moveset!

Djinn

All of Isaac's special moves involve Djinn, and they tend to be much more powerful than normal specials. When they are "Set", Isaac is more powerful. His normals and smashes (which often incorporate Psynergy spells like Growth and Gaia) are improved in areas like range and damage depending on the number of Djinn Isaac has set. (If he has no Djinn set, some normals might not even work at all!) Isaac is also easier to send flying for a KO when he has less Djinn.

However, when Isaac uses a special move, the attack "spends" the Djinn, and it is placed on "Standby". Isaac cannot use that move until the Djinn is set again, which involves holding down that Djinn's respective special input for a short duration (during which Isaac is vulnerable). And remember, Isaac becomes weakened overall with less Djinn.

Side Special: Flint

aKrAA8n.png

Isaac leaps forward for a devastating, high-damage sword slash. Spacing is important since hitting the sweet spot deals extra damage, but even if Isaac misses the enemy the earth will erupt with boulders and debris when his sword strikes the ground, giving it extra range and damage.

Neutral Special: Granite

iMjGSPz.png

Isaac empowers himself, granting him super armor and reduced incoming damage. He'll be able to eat attacks that would normally KO him!

Down Special: Ground

noOx5hi.png

A number of large spheres spread out around Isaac and hover in place for a short time. If an enemy touches one of these spheres, they take light damage and are automatically slammed down to the ground (but only if there is a platform somewhere below them). The enemy also receives a debuff that prevents them from jumping for a short period of time.

Up Special: Vine

6QLc5Z4.png

A torrent of vines will erupt from the platform immediately below Isaac. (Even if there is no platform below him, vines will still rise from off-screen.) The vines will grow to Isaac's current position, no matter how high he his. As the vines grow, they will damage enemies and bring them up with them. Isaac can grab the tallest vine and hang from it like an edge, giving him an opportunity to jump again as a form of recovery.

-----

Summons

Besides a manual reset, Isaac can also spend his standby Djinn on a summon! Summons are devastating attacks, spending all Djinn on standby. Unfortunately, this puts all spent Djinn on cooldown, meaning Isaac cannot manually reset them and is thus weak for a short period of time. After the cooldown, the Djinn are automatically set to Isaac again.

Summons are cast by quickly pressing the corresponding special input of any standby Djinn twice in succession.

One Djinn: Venus

HQxRe8e.jpg

A small torrent of magic blasts explode in the area around Isaac.

Two Djinn: Ramses

yADEOaq.jpg

Ramses's fist immediately punches the space in front of Isaac. Similar to a smash attack, it has high KO potential.

Three Djinn: Cybele

Vx4IvAl.jpg

Cybele quickly spits several small seeds onto the ground just in front of Isaac. A rush of thorns and briars erupt from the earth, covering a wide area range and damaging all enemies that touch them. Several platforms and vines will also appear in the growth, which Isaac can stand on or hang from. The seeds will take root even if they land off-screen, making this summon double as a potential recovery!

Four Djinn: Judgment

w84YcZa.jpg

Judgment will fly around the battlefield, aiming at Isaac's foes. He will fire a single blast that will create a large AOE on impact. This move is similar to a Smart Bomb item in that it will deal large, sustained damage before sending foes flying.

------

Besides Djinn, I see Isaac's moveset being fun and unorthodox, with lots of spells and earth-related attacks involving rocks, sand, flowers, and other similar elements. I could see players eschewing the Djinn for souped-up normals all of the time, or going all-in on Djinn and summons! But the average player will probably try to maintain a balance between the two playstyles, spending and resetting Djinn when needed, and summoning during opportune moments.

I feel like this moveset accurately represents the gameplay and spirit of Golden Sun while still introducing a unique style of gameplay to the Smash universe!

(Just please Sakurai, don't make Isaac another slashy swordsman...)

Captain Rainbow, WarioWare D.I.Y. and Samurai Warrior 3.

Nearly year ago, someone spotted that Takamaru's game got review and rated by Australian Classification Board.

I guess they are waiting for right time to reveal Takamaru's new game to be ready for the announcement then they would release Virtual Console version for people in western to warming up to the game.

Maybe we will hear something about the game at E3.

Also someone said its not on Wii U VC anywhere and most classic Famicom games have been released by now.

How long has there been this much demand for Ridley in Smash? I assume before him the most wanted was Mega Man, and since he was announced I kind of thought Ridley would be a given. That was until the last Direct that implied he'd only be a stage hazard...

I did a google search to check this out. Even back in early 2005, before Brawl was announced and people were just talking about "the next Smash game", there were Ridley requests.

Most popular character at that time seemed to be Wario (I'm not surprised).

After Brawl was announced, Ridley quickly became one of the most popular suggestions. The most popular first-party suggestions after Dedede and Diddy were revealed seemed to be Ridley, King K Rool, Tom Nook, a 3rd generation Pokemon (Gardeoir, Deoxys, Blaziken), Lyn, Little Mac, Samurai Goroh, Krystal, Wolf, Bowser Jr., Midna, Vaati, Captain Syrup, Chibi-Robo, Waluigi, and of course, Geno.

Just curious as to why everyone is leaving Lucas out of their lists. Surely Sakurai has the manpower and assets to include the previous roster minus Ivysaur and Squirtle.
Because assuming the "48 minus 4" leak is true, we need someone else gone after the two you mentioned and Snake. I'd guess Lucas is next.

I wonder if Ike will be cut because Zelda's Down B is very similar to Ike's Side B, just like sheik's grenade is very similar to snake's grenade :(

We could get Ike's moves transplanted onto shulk, and make him the heavy-hitting swordsman.

Oh well, 4 months max and we'll know everything.

Those are both good reasons - they're just not the reason Sakurai gave. And Sonic and Megaman both deserve to be in Smash about 1000 times more than Snake, whose iconic games came out on a rival platform, and whose only recent Nintendo release (on the Gamecube) Kojima publicly distanced himself from. Compare how tight Sega is with Nintendo with the Sonic and Mario games, or how Mega Man has been on every Nintendo system.

And to the person saying entitled gamer, wtf? I'm not sure who you're talking to - I was pretty clearly saying that fan requests are a bad reason to include someone in a game, and the reason Sakurai gave for Snake being in the game boils down to a fan request. In other words, Sakura (rightly!) doesn't pay attention to who people on internet forums are clamoring for, and his buddy asking him to put a character in the game (so the buddy's kid will like the buddy's character more?) is, BY ITSELF, no different.

Assuming 4 cuts, with 3 of them being Ivysaur, Squirtle and Snake, Wolf must be next in line. Fox does not need 2 clones.
But Wolf is more differentiated from Fox than Lucas is from Ness, and brings a villain to the table, as opposed to Lucas who brings nothing new at all.

*Isaac's moveset*

Creating a moveset like that is just condemning the character to never be played/liked.

While I aggree with you that they shouldn't go for a "Swordsman" moveset, I'd rather they made him a magic focused swordsman (using psynergy for the attacks like move, halt, tremor, force, sand...) than involving a complex/confusing djinn mechanic.

Edit: Forgot to quote.

Ike's Side-B is nothing like Zelda's new move. The knight is almost like a projectile and is used for spacing, while Ike's move is for getting in and recovery.

Shouldn't Isaac's moveset have the hand thing from Brawl?

Doesn't matter. Wolf is going to go the way of Dr. Mario.
While I don't like Star Fox getting three characters in Brawl, I don't think Wolf is getting cut, especially web after fucking Toon Link is still in.

Star Fox is one of those franchises I just don't get the popularity of.

Its actually kind of impressive that the entirety of the franchise basically revolves around the popularity and success of one game and its remake.

Yeah, I've been hoping that all the Brawl veterans return, but I don't know if I really believe that given a significant number were cut in the Melee-Brawl transition... anyone know how many from Melee failed to appear in Brawl, off the top of their heads? If not, I can just look it up...

We know those (Pichu aside) were destined to be back in Brawl too though, it was all Sonic's fault and due to time costraints. Sakurai's not cut-happy.

Because people seem to be hung up on 48 characters 4 cuts rumor lately so I guess they are trying to figure out who are the 4 cuts other than Ivysaur and Squirtle.
Let's see, 39-4 makes 35 veterans. 48 characters minus 35 leaves space for 13 newcomers. 6 are already known, 6 were probably leaked (Mii, Pac Man, Shulk, Palutena, Chrom, Chorus Kid)... that leaves only 1 open space?

You're telling me that between fan favourites Ridley, Mewtwo, Isaac, Takamaru, Dixie, King K. Rool, Ghirahim and Tingle, only one will be in? Madness. I'm not buying this "leak".

But they will remove a clone of a character who already has a far more popular clone.
Why do you think that? There's no reason to believe this.

You're telling me that between fan favourites Ridley, Mewtwo, Isaac, Takamaru, Dixie, King K. Rool, Ghirahim and Tingle, only one will be in. Madness. I'm not buying this "leak".
It helps that the 48 rumor showed up before the Chorus Men leak and the direct, before it was obvious that Squirtle and Ivysaur would be cut (and would count as separate characters). Also that the Chorus men leak fills up all the slots except for one like you said, with the one spot probably going to Mewtwo because we now have one less Pokemon character than we did in brawl. This makes sense that the Chorus men leak didn't mention Mewtwo, because he's not a newcomer.

Also, Ridley is a stage hazard, Tingle and Isaac are probably still AT, Girahim never had a chance, and Takamaru was never really a lock. I am surprised about the lack of DK newcomers.

Doesn't matter. Wolf is going to go the way of Dr. Mario.

Conversely, he could go the way of Falco, and continue to be differentiated from Fox. Not that he really needs it.

Its actually kind of impressive that the entirety of the franchise basically revolves around the popularity and success of one game and its remake.

I would almost argue that Smash Bros is the biggest reason for the characters continued relevance. Well, maybe not the biggest, but it certainly grants them a lot more staying power.

Someone doesn't play Ike, AT ALL.

Alternatively, they just replace Ike entirely with Chrom. Their ingame stats are almost entirely identical from their respective games anyway.

I love how "clone" status is what people assume equals cut.
By that Logic Snake is in all day since there's no move set like his.

I just want Ike's moveset. If he looks different, that's fine. Chrom's a cool character.

Personally though I'd like to have Ike and Chrom. Ike keeping his moveset and Chrom getting a unique one.
