Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

I posted this earlier but it got (understandably) ignored because of new thread hype, so I'll repost it here:

Can we take a moment to appreciate the sheer amount of items in this game? So far we have every item that appeared in Brawl except for the Party Ball, Fan, and Cracker Launcher , plus 20 or so new items. Plus the new items look really awesome! My favorite being the Firebar from Mario and the Jetpack from PilotWings.

Seriously, the items in this game are awesome.

number of items has me excited. Hope their distribution is done right so the most powerful ones aren't super common like Smash Balls in Brawl.
How did the "Ridley is too big" thing start anyway?
Most common argument against him being playable in Brawl. And every time people thought the argument was settled, someone would bring it up.

I believe Sakurai mentioned it when he was confirmed to be only a Boss in Brawl, as to why he wasn't playable.
It started long before that. Here's what Sakurai said.
I think that would probably be impossible. [laughs] If we had put our best efforts into it, we may have been able to do it. But he might have been a little slow. Would that have been all right? [laughs]

Sorry that's what I read here iirc I have no idea where that originally came from just that it was the reason people were taking their 48 and 4 cuts comment seriously
Forgot about that rumored number. If we take into account the solid 48 number: we've got the 29 confirmed characters + 15 unannounced Brawl fighters + 6 possible remaining leaked newcomers (Mii, Pac-Man, Shulk, Palutena, Chorus Men, Chrom) totaling 50 characters.

I'm not sure whether Pokemon Trainer's Squirtle and Ivysaur would count as one or two cuts, but either way, this could lead to maybe 2 unannounced characters... maybe Dixie Kong/Mewtwo/
Ridley
. Oh lawd, I'm in rumor speculation hell...

Old topic but it does involve Ridley

ere are some things that Sakurai has said that I think the rest of this board might find interesting. This comes from the Sakurai interview in the May 2008 issue of Nintendo Power:

Nintendo Power: How did you go about choosing which characters to include in the final roster? Were there any characters that you really wish you could have included, but weren't able to for whatever reason?[/I]

Sakurai:Of course there were some characters that we couldn't include, but we've decided that we're not going to talk about them. [Laughs]

As far as choosing which characters, we had to really look at the series that would be represented in the game and create a balance that would make fans of all the series happy. We didn't want to have all Mario characters, all Pokemon characters... We looked at each series and tried to pick the characters that would have the widest appeal to the largest fan base. And of course, we looked at games like Animal Crossing and Nintendogs, where there aren't really any characters that lend themselves to fighting, and we decided not to include characters from those series as fighting characters.

One thing that was kind of a challenge is that we haven't had a lot of new characters from Nintendo since Captain Olimar [that could work well in a fighting game]; a lot of games have been Mario titles or new iterations of existing series.

Nintendo Power: There was a rumor at one point about Ridley being playable. Was that ever a consideration?

Sakurai: I think that would probably be pretty impossible. [Laughs] If we had put our best efforts into it, we may have been able to do it. But he might have been a little slow. Would that be all right? [Laughs]

This is actually a good point. The item balance in Brawl was horrible. Smash Balls and Dragoon popped up WAY too often. Hopefully they fix that this time around. Apparently item balance is a huge focus in MK8, so hopefully Sakurai takes note of that and does the same thing here. :P

Another thing I hated was the distribution for PokéBalls. Lord knows how many times I've seen fucking Gardevoir, yet I've only seen Manaphy once in the six years I've owned Brawl. But the whole PokéBall/Master Ball thing should help in that regard a lot.

Because apparently the Japanese competitive scene really likes Final Destination.

I think we need to let go of the idea that For Glory is intended to be for what we consider to be competitive players anyway.

It seems like it's meant for kids who take the game way too seriously online moreso than someone who is actually familiar with the intricacies of the game and plays on a variety of fair stages in a tournament setting.

So the whole reason of the final destination-itized stages in for glory mode is because winy brats want all the stages to be the same in order for them to not blame the stage for them losing and instead of their skills?

Damn, I was hoping for an Animal Crossing character. Guess I'll have to wait for Smash 6.

They need to stop pretending Smash is one of their anime games like Street Fighter.
I wonder what happened to the Japanese Melee scene. Are they keeping it alive?

A reminder that the Chorus Kids are adorable and worth including:

Thank you.

The Ridley is TOO BIG meme started WAAAAAAAAAAAAY before Ridley was confirmed a boss in Subspace which IIRC wasn't until after the game launched

It's common sense. Ridley will never be playable because he's too big.
Olimar will never be playable because he's too small.

Like seriously, give the size argument a rest, there are better ones.

Ugh. It was really bad. Some items seemed to barely appear at all; Super Spicy Curry for example.

There needs to be a way to set Pokemon rates. There were way too fucking many Munchlaxes, Gardevoirs, Bonslys, and Gulpins.

We need to get back on track. Why doesnt For Glory have Battlefield? Cmon Sakurai.

#BattlefieldForGlory on miiverse and twitter. I'm doing it as often as I can (no more than once per day). Send it to nintendo/sakurai. :) Any hashtag works, just try to let it be known you want more than final destination. I'm pretty sure i'm the only one doing it, but the more people, the better.

Don't get me wrong, I love Smash Balls, but I feel like they should be just a bit more rare. They appeared a bit too much for my liking. I mean it's a super powerful attack, don't you think it should feel special?

Agreed with pokeball pokemon rates and dragoon.

That's another thing. Make the Final Smashes better. Donkey Kong's just looks pathetic.

Agreed with pokeball pokemon rates and dragoon.

I'll bring it up again, and I know a lot of people are opposed to it, but maybe once you see all of the pokemon/assist trophies once, you enable an item switch type thing for pokemon.

The inclusion of the 'master ball' tells me this likely won't happen (if you want rare pokemon, disable pokeballs and enable master balls), but it would be nice.

Smash Balls really were way too common, to the point where they were usually turned off whenever i'd play with items. They needed to be a lot more rare.

Item setting rates would be really cool. Even more so if we could set Pokeball and Assist Trophy rates (no more Goldeen! :D).

Olimar will never be playable because he's too small.

Olimar makes sense because he's the only character from his franchise. Making Ridley only a little bit taller than Samus is going to look weird.

I get the feeling DK's has changed. I base this on nothing except everyone everywhere forgetting Donkey Konga has ever existed and the possibility people on the 3DS are not playing with sound.

That would be dumb, why would they do that.
Smashers need to be able to fight. What next, a character from Wii Fit?

It's not even that we want legendaries, it's that the normal Pokemon suck compared to Melee's. Too many gimmicks, not enough Pokemon that straight up attack.

*dead*

MM > TP > OoT > SS > tWW

Mid-tier Zelda. Obviously an amazing game judged relative to the rest of the industry, but among its peers?

TP better than OoT? SS better than WW? You gotta be kidding me, we can't be friends.
:P

(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

Yes, it would.

Olimar makes sense because he's the only character from his franchise. Making Ridley only a little bit taller than Samus is going to look weird.

Correct, that would be like making one of the pikmin bosses playable, but then scaling him down to olimar's size, when in his game they're much much bigger.

That's another thing. Make the Final Smashes better. Donkey Kong's just looks pathetic.

I liked that Donkey Kong's needed you to interact with it, if you know how you can do it and it's pretty fun. The one I never understood was Jigglypuff's.

Pikachu is a bit over 1 foot tall, does he look that small next to the 5'7'' Charizard or the 6'7'' Mewtwo? Again, the size argument makes no sense.

I'm hoping for individual frequency switchs for each item. Brawl had both the global switch, and individual switchs for on/off.

But really, so many awesome itens! And a lot more than Brawl. Until now, there's around 74 itens itens revealed while Brawl had around 50!

Someone with clout in the competitive community should start a #BattlefieldForGlory social media campaign and petition so that Sakurai and Nintendo get wind of it.

I feel like the final smash should be huge and happen not every game. The fact that it was possible to have a smash ball appear, you kill everyone, fight for another minute and then another one appears is what killed it for me in brawl. Hopefully they get those fixed, i think smashes should not be happening that often.

Ridley isn't that big. The wings don't need a hitbox.

Y'know, this picture kind of bothers me. In the video it looked like the shadows were facing away from the screen, but the main light source in the room (the lava) is projecting light towards the screen.

I liked that Donkey Kong's needed you to interact with it, if you know how you can do it and it's pretty fun. The one I never understood was Jigglypuff's.
Jigglypuff's makes sense (She's the balloon Pokemon) but it always looked lame.

Donkey Kong's just looks lame (I've never seen someone play the bongos in such a boring way) and it's not that great even if you synch up perfectly.

Y'know, this picture kind of bothers me. In the video it looked like the shadows were facing away from the screen, but the main light source in the room (the lava) is projecting light towards the screen.

Ridley is too big to be a boss, literally he's just a background character.

Correct, that would be like making one of the pikmin bosses playable, but then scaling him down to olimar's size, when in his game they're much much bigger.

This argument is awful, if only because most of those bosses are unimportant whereas Ridley is an actual important character in his series.

Olimar makes sense because he's the only character from his franchise. Making Ridley only a little bit taller than Samus is going to look weird.

Sakurai literally said in one of the Daily Pics that size and scale in Smash Bros. don't matter. So fuck off.
