I think Impa's chances with her role in Skyward Sword have increased, and Ghirahim also seems to be a fan favorite villain. The trophy specifically says Skyward Sword, not "Zelda series". Up until Skyward Sword, Tingle was really the only sensible Zelda newcomer, and he still makes a lot of sense.

That said, maybe it's not only newcomers from those series, but characters - which could mean that the Zelda trophy could hint at Ganondorf, and the FE one at Ike or Roy. There's no Metroid or Kid Icarus veteran though that hasn't already been revealed, so...

I think Zelda's "newcomer" will be Ganondorf with a more unique moveset that isn't obviously a Captain Falcon clone. That would give Zelda 5 characters, Mario 5 characters, and pokemon either 5 or 6 characters which seems right for the big 3. If any series besides Pokemon is gonna get 6 characters its Mario before Zelda

There's absolutely no way there will be two separate playable Sheikah. Impa's chances (which were already extremely low) died with Sheik's reveal.

I'm honestly a little surprised they didn't take this opportunity to make that change considering how long it's been since anybody's cared about Sheik outside of Smash. She wasn't even a very cool character in OoT to begin with, and she didn't do anything combat oriented at all, where as Impa kicked serious ass in Skyward Sword.

Plus, her final smash could have somehow incorporated her older form or the gate of time.

Luigi has appeared in every major Mario platforming game and spin off since Sunshine, Yoshi is 50/50 on appearances since his appearance including not being in the most recent game 3D World. Rosalina has been in more of the recent Mario games then Yoshi has.

I understand your point and I can't deny that we could very easily classify yoshi as a Mario character, but Sakurai and Smash classify him as his own franchise and thats really the most important thing when speculating the roster

I agree with the fact that with Sheik's return, Impa's chances have significantly dropped. This would've been a good opportunity to drop Sheik in favor of Impa - Sheik was only in one single game, and a minor background character at that. She was only kept because of the fact she was directly tied to Zelda with the transformation mechanic, but that is gone now. Impa inheriting Sheik's moveset instead of Sheik returning seemed like a better choice. Then again, the Smash fans would probably kick and scream if Sheik were ultimately cut.

Luigi is identified as Mario character within Smash (by the way of the super mushroom icon), wheras Yoshi, Donkey Kong and Wario have icons of their respective series. Thus, by Smash's definition of a series, those 3 do not belong into the Mario series.

I don't think popularity alone is what Samurai looks at when selecting characters for Smash. Not that I disagree with you that Ghirahim won't be in the game.

Oh, no, I don't agree with that assessment either. There's no "series slots". Sakurai adds characters he wants to add. Case in point: Star Fox getting 3 characters, MOTHER getting 2 characters, etc.

I disagree. Midna was a common request, yes, but the Brawl roster already had been set in stone by the time Twilight Princess was released. Plus, the triforce trio (and Sheik) got their Twilight Princess designs. I believe TP was represented well enough.
At this point, however, Skyward Sword is the most recent Zelda, and if a newcomer from Zelda were to be released, it would likely be somebody from Skyward Sword, or somebody who spans across the entire series (which at this point really only encompasses Impa and Tingle).

I haven't liked Zelda since it went 3D. I might only get the 3DS game, since that one reminds me a lot of A Link To The Past in terms of style and combat, if I do get one.
