Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

Roy got replaced by a more well-known character from a more recent game. It's entire logical to think that the same will happen with Ike.
Roy didn't have a unique moveset though, Ike does.

And isn't Ike the second most used lord?

EDIT: What I mean by that is that he is a lord with the second most games as a protagonist? Second to Marth?

Roy was a clone of Marth and his game was a Japan exclusive.

Ike has a unique moveset, playstyle and was the main character of two fire emblem games.

I assume he is even popular within the FE development team considering
there's a character that claims to be an Ike descendant in Awakening

There's little reason to assume Ike is going away unless Sakurai and the team feel that the series is just fine with 2 reps, considering Starfox has 3 and Mother has 2. Given FE's recent success I don't see why it can't have 3.

I need to hear how Ike is in any way a clone of Marth besides counter and blue hair.

Yeah, besides that counter he's nothing alike.

I hope we do get something for single player in this game. I'm a person who doesn't always have access to friends so the majority of the time I played Brawl by myself. If we're not getting Subspace then at least all the other mini games and modes we got in Brawl.

Ike didn't replace Roy. They both coexisted during development to a certain point, but there wasn't enough time to include Roy.

If events are coming back, anything else beyond that is icing on the cake for me =)

In terms of character cuts and what not, that decision has long since been made, even accounting for crunch time cuts. Crunch time is now. If anyone is being cut for a lack of time, they were cut a while ago.

Roy got the boot for being a clone only added to pad the roster like Dr Mario and Pichu.

Ike isn't going anywhere.

....eh. Its commonly believed that the only truly intended cut characters ever were Young Link and Pichu.

Time constraints and delays got the better of the other three.

We don't know how Sakurai will treat Ike. There is no set pattern. Like at all.

Roy was planned for Brawl. It's likely he was the second-to-last character to get cut (before Mewtwo), as he has the most references to his character after Mewtwo. They even had planned to give him his own victory jingle, which is a trait he only shares with Mewtwo out of the cut characters. It's obvious he was much further in development than the other 5 cut characters.
The same can't be said about Pichu who never was even on the planned roster, and Doc, who must've been gotten the boot fairly early in the development process.

Young Link still was in Brawl and still is in Smash 4, he just got reskinned and the "Young" was turned into "Toon". But Toon Link is representing the same aspect that Young Link was, just that the Young Link sub-series of Zelda since then has gotten a change in art direction.

Cut... time constraints... same end result :P

Eh.

One situation can lead to returning characters. (Time constraints)

The other situation can be assumed they won't be returning because there was a reason they were cut to begin with. (development cuts)

Time constraints didn't separate Shiek/Zelda and assumingly cut Ivysaur and Squirtle. :)

So if Smash were to take some crazy pills and try copying PSABR's approach of taking two different series and mashing them into a combo stage, what two franchises would you want to see mashed together for a stage?

Tomodachi Life x Famicom Detective Club. Two non-mainstream Nintendo games by Sakamoto. Watch your Miis freak out in the background while a killer is on the loose!

As for the current discussion: I think Ike will be fine. Not 100% sure, but he still seems pretty safe. The only thing I'm really worried about is if they try to put him in his dumb Awakening DLC costume.

Cut... time constraints... same end result :P

The end result is the same, but there's a difference between a character who never was planned to be included (e.g. Pichu) and a character who was planned but wasn't finished in time (e.g. Roy). In that the former never would've been included regardless, whereas the latter would've been included if the resources and time would've been available.

We don't know exactly why Roy was picked to be dropped over, say, Falco, we can only speculate. It's likely that Roy was booted because his series already had 2 characters, and that he indeed was a clone of Marth, unlike Ike who brought a new moveset to the table, and Fire Emblem would do just as fine with only 2 characters. But that's just my assumption.

I believe Ike will return. Sakurai doesn't want to cut characters. He's unique and popular.

We'll see about that

The only thing that would keep Ike from coming back, in my opinion, is the team bringing Chrom into the game. Just because I'm struggling to see how their movesets would be different.

Real talk though, Chrom is pretty boring, and I'd prefer other awakening characters over him.

Unlikely as it may seem, Ivysaur and Squirtle being veterans and fairly unique as far as playstyle goes makes me curious about their odds.

Charizard's obviously got priority over them, he's the most popular of the lot and still one of the golden boys of the franchise (as is plainly evident with his two Mega Evolutions)... but Squirtle and Ivysaur have art assets to grab from Brawl and wouldn't need much work conceptually to return. When we've got Toon Link returning and Charizard's back and sporting a model almost identical to the one in Brawl, it's a bit odd to think those two might not make it.

It's pretty clear he doesn't want to cut characters, in any case. We've got Toon Link already confirmed to return (and he's the cloniest of clones) and other transformations gutted but the movesets retained... I'm not entirely positive that Ivysaur and Squirtle are down for the count. It just seems unlikely with a release date looming.

Chrom is super boring though. I mean yeah Ike wasn't the most interesting guy with but it worked within his world...but Chrom was outclassed character wise by damn near every other character in his own game in terms of being memorable..

awesome cape tho

I wasn't here during the Smash Direct...I just want to say that I love Greninja...but that basically means RIP Squirtle....which is too bad, because Squirtle was unbelievably good in Project M.
