Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

I'm very happy they put the Boxing Ring in both games.

It's a very nice stage.

Did you guys notice, when someone gets a KO in the Boxing Ring, the sign flashes a lightning bolt and says "KO"?

RETRO STAGES PREDICTION (in no particular relevance or order)

3DS
1. Smashville
Wii U is getting Town and City based on Animal Crossing City Folk, and they seem to share a similar niche, so there's no real reason to bring it back there. But 3DS's only revealed Animal Crossing stage is based on the Island from New Leaf instead of the village, which leaves Smashville with a comfy spot. Plus it's based on Wild World, the DS entry in the series.​
2. Mushroomy Kingdom
Something I've noticed about the 3DS stages so far is that they're not terribly big, probably because of the small screen real estate and how difficult it could be to track the fighters if the camera zooms out too far. That doesn't mean they're simple or don't get to cover a lot of area though, as we've seen with 3D Land and Prisim Tower. Cue Mushroomy Kingdom, which fits that mold perfectly.​
3. Fountain of Dreams
Small, elegant, Kirby. Would fit in just fine.​

Wii U
1. Temple
I mean, it's gotta go somewhere. Probably too big a stage for the 3DS, camerawise.​
2. Pirate Ship
Toon Link hasn't had new outings on Wii U, so so it'd be pretty good representation for him and a decent analogue to the Spirit Train on 3DS.​
3. Frigate Orpheon
I don't really have any justification for it. I just like it and something tells me it'd be difficult to track the stage flipping on 3DS.​

Showing just the shadow because the game isn't finished would make no sense, he showed the hole in Pyrosphere alluding to Ridley in freakin' September. You think he didn't have the time to complete boss Ridley in that time frame (September-April)?

Yeah, his mobility is what really needs the nerf, as well as the speed at which his attacks come out/recover. As far as knockback, the opposite seems to be the case (thankfully) as more characters are receiving moves with greater knockback, and as a result increasing their kill potentials.

Yeah I doubt it'll happen too. It appears that all characters may pose a legitimtate threat in this game if these balance changes are any indication.
 
I think that because FOR GLORY is an actual, official mode, that they'll hopefully balance around that mode, and not 4v4 w/ items, etc. *Crosses Fingers* It also means they'll likely balance around final destination, so even though battlefield options were fair in previous games, maybe final destination is what will be fair in this game. Who know. I still want #BattlefieldForGlory

I agree with this. I'm not a big fan of the charge hammer, I really liked the feel of swinging the hammer in Brawl, I would've preferred that return. Not every character needs a charge move. It's the one veteran change I haven't enjoyed so far. I'm not 100% on the Final Smash either, though it certainly doesn't look bad. It just feels a little less Kirby to me. Ah well.

I guess I'll wait and see how it plays before I pass too much judgement.

That's presumably why he hasn't shown him yet. I can't imagine stage hazards are very high on the development totem pole.

Or he could literally just be teasing the fact that it's ridley, and it's really nothing more sinister than that. It could be a tease akin to the 'Who's that pokemon!', or a tease to 'Oh I wonder which version of ridley it is' or a tease for 'We'll show him off in more detail later, but for now, all you get is a shadow!'

It could also be for what you said. Maybe the animations/mechanics aren't complete yet. He did nothing but lame idle animations in the shadow.

Edit: NVM I think I had a dream that lava poured from different holes sometimes.
 
  • During the bosses-as-stage-hazards segment of the Direct, Ridley is shown hovering over the Pyrosphere stage.
  • The stage itself is where Samus fights Ridley in Other M.
  • The stage is battle damaged (crumpled pillars, et cetera).
  • There are giant holes in the wall, which Ridley creates in Other M.
Obviously Ridley's playable, you guys.

It's obvious Ridley is a boss hazard in Pyrosphere, and if I were a betting man, I wouldn't put money on him being playable.

However.

I find it very intriguing that Sakurai, in a Direct full of trolls (Zero Suit Samus, Pseudo-Palutena, etc) would only show Ridley's shadow. He knows the conclusion we'll draw is, "Oh, Ridley is a boss. He's not playable." But why not just show Ridley then?

A small part of me wonders if Ridley may still be playable. And when Other M Ridley is the stage hazard, and classic Ridley or Meta Ridley is the playable character, Sakurai will say something to the effect of, "The Other M Ridley is a separate creature from the classic Ridley." Which is true -- the Ridley in Other M grows from a hatchling and isn't the same physical specimen, so to speak, as the Ridley that killed Samus' family.

it would be quite the bait-and-switch reversal, and a real crowd-pleasing reveal. Unlikely, but part of me wonders.

I'll see how the 3DS plays on my wifi, and if it doesn't meet expectations (I know the wireless adapter in the 3DS is technically different hardware from what's in the Wii U, but meh), I'll order the actual nintendo one, assuming they're in stock. Much rather have it BEFORE the game is out than it be sold out once it's out.
 
He didn't show Ridley because it's supposed to be a surprise. He could have showed nothing at all when he said there were other boss characters, but he showed ridley's shadow because he knows people like Ridley. It's similar to how he hinted at Ridley when Pyrosphere was first revealed.

He's getting us hyped up for a boss character he knows we want.

Completely agreed, I was disappointed seeing the change in the direct.
More so when I remembered that there were other ultra abilities they could have used instead, of all the unique abilities Kirby can gain to obliterate a screens worth of enemies they went with a big sword, I'd sooner have rolled around as the giant Snowball.

Because Sakurai hates deconfirming characters.

He has already said in the past how it's the one thing he doesn't like doing as that leaves the rest of the roster determinable as part of a process of elimination. On top of that, revealing Ridley as a boss means showing even more of the game, and Sakurai has stated that compared to Brawl one of the things he was going to do was dial down on the amount of "talking". He most likely didn't want to show Ridley as that would spoil the surprise of actually seeing what he does in-game.

I'm not saying Ridley isn't going to be playable but there is a good chance that any "hints" in the Direct isn't going to amount to anything, and is potentially giving him too much credit. Sakurai might know how to push people's buttons but that doesn't mean there's some grand plan at play here.
 
I am going to take a wild guess that Dixie is more likely to be playable character after seeing the developers managed to make Midna happening since she can grab opponents with her hairs, so I could see that they would use the mechanism for Dixie.

I don't think Ridley is playable, but this is a terrible argument.

Toon Link is driving the train in the Spirit Tracks stage, obviously that means he won't be playable... oh wait.

And why didn't he just show another stage boss if Ridley was incomplete/questionable/whatever.
 
When Sakurai said to use a Lan adaptor do have a better on-line experience, I just got concerned, because I heard something similar about Brawl and play it on-line was always horrible, using lan or wifi.
And please, I am able to play Monster hunter 4 with a lot of Japanese player without any issue.

It's a recommendation on Sakurai's part. Wired connection > Wireless connection. This is a fact.

You can probably play with Wi-Fi just fine depending on your connection but the most optimal results is always when you're wired.

Previously, when Toon Link was not in play, he'd drive the train. In this screenshot, he's not in play and Alfonzo is driving. I think they changed it:

Seems like Sakurai has too much fun revealing characters via those movies. Would be an odd choice to show/hint at a playable Ridley before the movie is revealed.

No, the idea I'm suggesting is the shadow belongs to the stage hazard, but that a different iteration of Ridley might be playable separately, with the reasoning that as per the series, they're technically different specimens (the Other M Ridley grows from a hatchling and is technically a separate entity from the one that has historically been Samus' rival). Thus, the bait and switch works by getting us to rule out Ridley as a boss, only to be hit with this caveat where he can be a boss in one form and playable in another.

Like I said, if I were a betting man, I would NOT bet on this being the case. But still, part of me can't help but wonder why Sakurai handled this the way he did, and if it perhaps is a setup for another reversal.

So... Why can't the same thing happen with Ridley?

Hell, they could easily replace him in the stage with the Nintendoland Ridley. That would be a smart and funny solution.

Edit: just in case you didn't know, Alfonzo automatically replaces Toon Link when he's selected at the character screen.

Or it could be random, but always Alfonzo if Toon Link is being played as on the stage?

I could easily see the same thing happening with Ridley on Pyrosphere. Have two different stage hazards—Ridley, of course, plus another enemy. Maybe a different form of Ridley (perhaps his adolescent stage from Other M, or Meta Ridley from Prime, or even Mecha Ridley from Zero Mission), or Nightmare! Either boss would randomly appear on the stage, except when Ridley's being played as, in which case it will always be the other boss.

...Yes? It's not like Smash was ever particularly serious. Changing the stage boss to Nintendoland's robot Ridley when the actual Ridley is selected at the character screen would be a funny way of keeping "continuity" while also referencing another Metroid product.

Alfonzo is probably random when TLink is absent, but always there when TLink is battling.

It doesn't keep continuity at all though, because it's from a different game. Out of all the series in Smash, Metroid is probably the one that clashes the most with NintendoLand's style. Considering that Ridley has countless other variations in-universe that, while technically shouldn't be there either, still make a lot more sense, NintendoLand is probably the last place you should go.

It just strikes me as a profoundly bad idea, and only funny if you're the kind of person who enjoys seeing developers make baffling decisions.
 
That's been talked about before. Link has been in the screenshots whenever Alfonzo is there. It seems if Toon Link or Link are playing on that stage, Alfonzo will appear.

I don't understand why people are talking in absolutes. There should be some room for doubt. Like I don't think Ridley's shadow only being shown will mean he is going to be playable, but I guess I see the fact it could be interpreted that way. It could also mean that Sakurai didn't want to show what Ridley does.
