Idle Thumbs Megathread | Indepth discussion inbetween horsebags and birdsounds

For what it's worth, Nick sold me on trying AC4. He also said a couple times that he was genuinely enjoying the game. Assassin's Creed as an entity is hard to get excited over -- for me it's the poster child for yearly cash in sequels at this point -- but the stuff wrapping Black Flag seems pretty interesting and fun. Everyone who has talked about it positively since release has pointed out that it does all this weird crazy unexpected meta stuff and that's really intriguing.

Cool. It was just hard to get a read on the attitude coming off of the discussion. Nick seemed like he wasn't super into it, and Remo seemed to be dismissing it. While I understand the AC fatigue, just the fact that this one seems so wild and out there would make me have the opposite reaction, which you seem to be saying here (to check out the game).

The robot section of the 'cast had me laughing out loud in a Bangkok supermarket, so you should be proud of yourselves.

This is amazing.

It's like listening to I am the Walrus backwards.

I don't see what's so unusual about this. It's fairly well documented that Jesus, Peter, and Nietzsche were regulars at Chuck E Cheese. Nietzsche made his famous "God is dead" quote in between bouncy house sessions.

I got to Allard with the prototype Xbox that is actually shaped like a giant letter X. How much further do I have to go? I wasn't really counting the number of transformations.

Jake's right there's a tile missing, but here's all of the Allards leading up to the 2048

and here's the last one

I really enjoyed today's cast.

BTW that email with Australians shitting on other Australians is a Giant Bomb email thing. As much as I enjoy it on the Bombcast, can we please just keep it there?

I laughed so hard when Chris said "The thing about Hitman Go is if it had all those animations and stuff it wouldn't be... it wouldn't be... it wouldn't be good"

I didn't think it was an Australian shitting on anything? And the "thong" reference is a thing about how people everywhere else call them "flip-flops".

Man, i had to stop the podcast before they spoiled Mad Men but i really wanted to hear what they thought about the show in general. Thanks for pushing it to the end of the podcast, guys.Very much appreciate the fact that you guys tackled sean and pinned him to the ground when he wanted to go full podblast and left that part for the end. I really need to catch up on that show.

Ha, so I've started the episode and he directly addresses his plans for the next season. He wants to showcase more varied personalities and positions within the industry. Cool sounding. Also, apparently Ken's wife is just hanging out playing gameboy while they're recording. At least I think it was his wife, they have the same last name.

I haven't listened yet, but his wife's name is Meredith. She's great!

I'm definitely excited to hear more from different types of positions! Being a software developer myself, I always love hearing about the day-to-day funny/interesting stories from the "grunts" of game development.

Every time someone asks "why the heck didn't they just do <X>??" there's usually an immensely interesting story for why the developer wanted to do <X> but couldn't.

Tone Control is my favorite gaming podcast, which sucks to say since I host it, but it's been a great listen.
Tone Control is the podcast that I wish existed when I was writing for a Nintendo fansite in high school. It has the level of insight into game development and candor that I so desperately craved back then. To finally get my fix now over a decade later is satisfying.

I really identified with Chris's observations about Fract, learning games, time consumption, commitment and worthwhile play sessions. I'm just coming off a year+ long 200 hour Dark Souls playthrough. The scope of my mental commitment to that game is something I hadn't considered before. That game became a part of who I was and am. It takes so much out of you to have an experience like that. Its no wonder they don't come around too often. Had I known what was truly in store for me when I decided to dedicate myself to Dark Souls I probably wouldn't have done it.

Right now, I'm exclusively dating Titanfall and I have to say I'm a lot happier. But I notice a pattern with games where I play just enough to intellectually understand what they're doing, and then don't come back to them. When I sit down for the one play session I get a day, I don't want to spend time learning new systems or learning how to see through the UI and presentation to the point where I'm immersed. It takes a while to fully transport yourself inside the game and once you get over that hump you want to stick with it. You have to put a lot of work in to get yourself acclimated to the point where you can sit down and not feel like you're wasting time fiddling with a computer.

I put about an hour in Fract over the weekend and can't wait to get back to it.. but its gonna require a night alone where I can turn of iOS and dig deep to its core. I imagine VR experiences will be similarly hard to make mental and temporal space for.

Chris, I wanted to say that I bought Spelunky for Vita and PC and now it's ruining my life. I'm going to bed at 1 but falling asleep at 2 because of 'just one more run' syndrome. God damn you Chris Remo and god damn you Derek Yu. You bastards.

This game's so fucking good! You fuckers! What did you do to me?

Yessss. That tucked in bed Spelunky time is fantastic.

I wonder precisely when this was recorded.

In the beginning they mention its at GDC and that part2 of Burial at Sea is going to be released the upcoming Tuesday. So I think you could deduce that date, but not much more precisely than that.

Its a really great interview. Ken is such a great creative. Theres a very nice moment where Ken tells Steve that Minerva's Den is the a perfect take on the Bioshock theme. Those weren't his words but it was pretty cool.

Jake, I thought that I could offer some perspective on whether you could watch TI4 and get something out of it.

My consumption of Dota 2 is almost entirely via watching pro games. I started by watching during TI2, having only played a few bot matches to get a better handle on the mechanics. I was pretty lost for awhile, but I kept picking up enough to keep me going.

The biggest thing which helped me was watching the game via the Dota 2 client, which lets you:
  • Mouse over the skills of a hero and get the tooltip information. This helps to quickly inform you of what its effect is.
  • Move the camera around yourself, which helps when the commentators are flipping around a lot and you're having a hard time following the action. You'll likely miss some stuff, but you'll learn a lot about the map.
  • Follow a particular player, which gives some insight into how the hero and/or role they're playing works.
  • Show the gold/exp graphs, so you can instantly know which team is ahead.
  • Hover over items to figure out what they do.
A lot of that can be found by browsing a wiki, but it's not nearly as convenient.

If I could recommend anything, it would be to play a few bot matches and watch a few games before TI4. That way, you've got a little bit of knowledge under your belt before the big games start. When you first start, you will likely say to yourself: "I have no idea what is happening." Don't let this get you down. You'll figure it out.

It's about 1.5 years later and I still only really watch pro games. I've tried playing with other people a few times, but I just don't think it's for me.

Does the audio quality improve on Tone Control?

I tried some of the Tim Schafer episode and it sounds like they recorded it underneath a highway overpass.

I think it just varies from episode to episode because they are not recorded in a consistent environment but at whatever place lends itself for an interview with most likely portable equipment.

So yeah. Probably no kidney-mics, pop filters, compressors, audio-insulated rooms and whatever nifty thing you can use to massage your listeners' ears. That's just the nature of the thing. I think it mostly sounds pretty good all things considered. :)

Enjoyed the Mad Men talk!

Wasn't the random girl who showed up an offering from the company trying to court Don? It wasn't a contrived appearance of a random women propositioning Don like the guys were frustrated with, it was a direct "gift" that the company was trying to use to entice Don to come work for them.

That was furthered by the immediately following scene that showed Don knocking on someone's door - making it seem like he was knocking on that girl's door, but instead it was Roger's.

Is anyone having trouble downloading episodes from the Thumbs website? Been trying to get 156 and 157 but am completely unable to do so
