Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

Brawl had tons of newcomers, stages, items, modes, and subspace emissary. In terms of game content who was disappointed again? Disappointed due to the physics/balance is one thing but we're not discussing that in terms of having lower or higher expectations
The Dojo spoiled many of the surprises the game had back in the day. I still remember people being madly disappointed that there wasn't a lot left to discover by the time it came out.

Well, I guess having low expectations and being pleasantly surprised is better than having high expectations and being disappointed.

is more about a sensation that balance is going to be more of a focus in this game, and avoiding putting too much characters will help that.
also the number seems low only because some of the clones are replaced by totally new characters,is more about optimizing the roster than anything.

and i say that as a ganondorf user,so if ganondorf gets a new moveset,i lose a main :(

Then people should expect to be disappointed again because we've probably seen most of the items and modes (for the 3ds version) and most of the hidden characters will probably be old vets. I dunno why you'd follow the dojo or daily smash pics and be surprised when you know 80% of the games content already

We all got burned by Brawl too.
Huh? More stages, more characters, more music, more items, much more content in general etc. and as a result even more fun to play with friends than Melee (in my experience).

Brawl over Melee any day for me, at least when playing with frineds.

Speak for yourself. We certainly weren't ALL burned by Brawl.

While waiting for the Pic of the Day, I decided to make a mock-up of SmashGAF's ideal roster.

Brawl itself is fantastic game to play with friends but point of the comments is that Brawl Dojo overhyped and overspoiled us so much.

The Dojo was the ultimate hype machine, man.

In any case, besides the physics being eh, the game had most of the worst stages in the series (New Pork City, 75m, Mario Bros., etc.), the story was extremely forgettable outside of the cutscenes, changes to Classic and All-Star Mode made them more boring, and I don't need to say anything about the online play.

Good game, yes, but I'm skeptical it would have quite met expectations even without the Dojo.

Only the competitive community is burned by Brawl (as they should be. That game is shit for competitive play).

But I agree that Brawl is far more fun in a party setting.

No Shrek or even Shadow?

So mad right now I can't even think. How could you shove this roster in our faces like that? Grow up!!!

:)

Brawl is just less enjoyable to play because of mechanics imho. Dojo had nothing to do with it.

Even my friends who are only really couch-party gamers felt there was something off about Brawl when compared with Melee

This

The only way you were disappointed by brawls number of characters, stages, items, modes, etc was if you had extremely unrealistic expectations

I think so too. I don't care how zany it gets played, when moving around and doing attacks aren't fun, the game breaks down.

Well, yes, I'm tempering myself now. People just didn't expect Sakurai was actually giving away everything back in the day.

Glad you were able to enjoy it fully.

Speaking of Zelda characters in Smash, I know a lot of people are thinking if there's going to be a new Legend of Zelda character it's likely going to be from Skyward Sword, probably Ghirahim, Impa, or Demise, right?

What are the chances they go with Link Between Worlds instead, though? What are the chances of say, Ravio, do you think?
When I was walking to work yesterday I thought of how much I wanted a Zelda spin-off series called The Legend of Hilda in which you play as Ravio in Lorule. And then you could add Ravio in Smash with this logo:

It would be pretty weird to play as Ravio. Isn't his whole deal pretty much that he sucks at adventuring, since he has no real courage in battle?

I found Brawl less fun on a casual level. Tripping isn't even fun for casuals. I felt like the items were poorly balanced as well, and it was just too easy to get blown up in the game.

Brawl's items like the Smash Ball and Dragoon, manage to add new dynamics to the matches. That easily makes them superior to Melee's more standard options to me. You can turn them off to have more standard battle, or allow them to appear to allow the matches to change focus with their appearance.

The only way you were disappointed by brawls number of characters, stages, items, modes, etc was if you had extremely unrealistic expectations

Brawl's overall line up was nice, but it's division of new characters and veterans between the starter and unlockable cast did lead to disappointment when the full line up first leaked. Most people were expecting the unlockable characters to be mostly newcomers like in Melee, not just mostly veterans with a few new ones (Not counting the 3rd party characters, which were revealed before launch for obvious reasons, Lucario, Toon Link, Wolf and ROB were the only new characters kept as unlockable characters in Brawl, all other unlockables were veterans, and even Toon Link is basically just a revamped Young Link. Meanwhile, Melee, although having a much smaller character line up, had 9 newcomers among the unlockable characters).

I feel like it's simply too goddamn slow and floaty. Melee was snappy as hell, and that's the kind of thing even less dedicated gamers can notice really quickly

I played Brawl for a couple hours with a friend just the other night, plays well enough for me /shrug

Well, I assume that Ravio has different incarnations just like Link. At least one of them must be pretty brave, right?
I mean maybe, but then he wouldn't really be Ravio anymore. It's like if there was a Zelda game where the playable Link stayed inside his house writing books the whole time.

brawl content disappointed me, because i was thinking all the time:

"why would they spent aaaall that time doing that huge story mode!? that story mode and all those stickers are not what smash bros is, brawl mode (vs mode) is smash bros. They could have used all that time in things like balancing the characters in vs mode... or whatever they wanted to do, with vs mode"

" Most " Gaf and 4 chan maybe.

Everyone else " SONIC AND MARIO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!!!!!"

Not invalidating your feelings, I completely understand how your eel but, "most " makes me laugh.
There is a direct correlation between time sent playing previous Smash Bros games and dislike for Brawl. Not exclusive to two forums.

I don't see how he doesn't have at least Dead Man's Volley in the game at all. It's literally what defines him. He's used it in Zelda, Link To The Past, Ocarina of time, The Oracles and Twilight Princess, then his Phantom uses it in Ocarina of Time, Four Swords Adventures, and Wind Waker, and even Nightmare uses it in Links Awakening. Hell, Aghanim copies him and uses it in Link to the Past too XD

Ganondorf without projectiles is like Link without his sword.

I don't think I've ever been on a site where the majority didn't prefer Melee.

1) visit more places on the web.

2) the web is a minority opinion of most of the people who play smash bros.

" most" is usually" neogaf or 4chan or whatever.

Actually most doesn't really give a shit.

Thats the reality you live in. You visit minority sites for enthusiasts, and thats ok.

Its alot of cases where that represents nothing, epically popular nintendo games.

Something weird I noticed: Donkey Kong is solidly meh-tier (below-average but not close to bottom) in every Smash game. Is there any other character with a more consistent tier position in all three Smashes?

(At least he has it better than Link)

DK ranks ok in Brawl when fighting high-tiers specifically.

Although Falco and Marth weren't in the first game, they are both high tier in both games they do appear in.

Out of the 6 billion-some odd people in the world, only maybe half a billion have ever even heard of Smash Bros. I'm guessing. Maybe it's more; no clue. And the vast majority of them haven't played it [citation needed].

Point is, you're right, most didn't care.

Also, Brawl completely ruined Samus's down+B. That better be fixed in this game...

It's funny how Samus, Link, Falcon, Ganondorf... a lot of characters people like and use and were already bad got nerfed hard. But at least Kirby and G&W got better I guess. Yay?

Kirby got a million billion times better.

But he's still only mid-tier.
