The problem with this logic is that there will always be a racist generation. Fifty years ago, calling a Black man "the Negro" would not be seen as offensive by the white majority. One hundred years ago, saying "the Negro would be happier if he was still enslaved" would be seen as a rational opinion.

In the future there were certainly be less people who spout this degree of racist bullshit, but the older generation will still be seen as racist. When we are in our seventies, behavior that now seems innocuous could seem horribly offensive. The mild casual racism often espoused by people on Reddit or 4chan will probably look just as awful as Cliven Bundy's comments.

Except double negatives are a perfectly valid linguistic feature, present in multiple languages, including some dialects of English. Perhaps they aren't present in Standard American English, but that's hardly the only valid form of the English language.

Reid deserves to get shit for that for the rest of his political career. If the right uses that as ammo then it's his and the left's fault for allowing him to keep his leadership position.

No doubt he deserved to take shit for it when he said it 2-3 years ago. He literally said Obama is electable because he doesn't speak black, which is like one step down from "he doesn't act black." I like Reid politically but it's clear he has some troubling views on race to put it lightly.

But creating a false equivalency to defend Bundy isn't smart, and I expect conservatives to do it.

For the most part, isn't this true though? I mean, it's pretty commonly discussed that Obama can't act aggressively because he'll come off like "angry black man"

Yes. I'd rather we not use drones domestically, regardless of how big of an asshole we'd be aiming it at.

On the other hand, I'd be all for building a huge fence and customs checkpoint around his property and letting him become the sovereign citizen he's always dreamed of. Hope he's sufficiently self-sufficient...

True but Reid's point wasn't about aggression, it was that Obama talks white ie "proper English and sounds smart." Which thus suggests "talking black"=sounding dumb.

This sentiment doesn't exist with the average white person? We can see this mentality constantly in sports when someone says of an athlete, "he speaks so eloquently". Translation: "he talks like my white ass does"

The comment was stupid for sure, but brutally honest as well.

I'd imagine the average white person believes various distasteful things about black people and minorities (not saying white people are racist, but western society has deeply ingrained stereotypes about races). The problem here is it's one step away from the "acting white/black" slope where acting white includes listening to non rap, reading, and being smart. It was an ugly comment on Reid's part, even if there's obvious truth in what he implied. Yes, if Obama talked like Lil Wayne he wouldn't be president.

'media trained' - makes me think of puppies or babies being potty trained. At least puppies and babies have a reasonable excuse for their behavior.
 
I don't know why the government backed down from the Bundy ranch and their rebel army. I say they should have arrested them and let them make the first shot, then ended it there.

The Government better be attempting to arrest them or punish them or something.
