As a gamer, what is something that non gamers say/do that gets under your skin?

Years ago at my old job, there was the girl in the office who said videogames rot the brain. I wouldn't let my kids play them. I wanted to turn around and say something but held my tongue. Or if someone asks, what is your hobby and gaming comes up on a list of things you like to do and they give you a funny look. In the end I don't care what people think but good gravy sometimes it can rub me the wrong way. Sometimes people look at gaming as a destructive hobby or being childish. I just don't get it sometimes lol.

People who say that gaming/First Person Shooters turn people into murderers.

Y'know, the typical Fox News type of crap.

Can't think of anything, people come up with silly things about activities they don't participate in all the time, I don't feel negative about any of it.

" you have no life" oh, really dude? I have more friends that I actually TALK TO AND INTERACT WITH every single day. Personally I also eventually meet them all. I have met and had a nice beer with many online buddies going to PAX or some kind of convention.

I think they are just jealous that we can make friends easier and agree easily more on subjects and topics.

Assuming I play or know about whatever game they've heard about.
Assuming I'll get along with some other fool they know just because they happen to play games.

Why does there have to be these threads every god damn day. Might as well just start taking Buzzfeed articles and swapping out one word or another with "gaming."

"aren't you too old for video games?"
I'm in my early 30's.

I hate those old fashioned people who think games are for kids.

"Hey we're gonna go outside, want to come along?"

"Gimme your lunch money!"

"Hey does this show have english voice acting?"

Real answer is the use of the word "mature." You're talking about a video game, it's inherently immature!

"I wish I had time for video games"

Seriously, its so insulting. There's a final bosman on it. So condescending to my hobby.

without knowing how you spend your time, when people hear that you do play games they say or think some shit like "yeah, thats all he does!". like i have no life.

fuck you. i raise 2 kids, work 50 hours a week and spend 7 hours or less on games amongst other things

I hate those old fashioned people who think games are for kids.

Which is why I rarely mention that I play games.

Also, any argument people make about blaming every bad thing on video games.

My Dad used to do the most obnoxious, hateful fucking thing:

He'd berate me by saying "Might as well put a toilet plunger to your ear and suck your brain out." He'd then make a plunging motion/sound gesture towards his ear.

It wasn't meant as a joke, either. It was said in an intense, mocking manner.

This coming from the same man who got me into gaming in the first place by buying an Atari and playing it with me (and sometimes begging me to stay and play certain games with him), and getting an NES and getting even more hooked on Super Mario Bros. than I was. As gaming progressed and changed with the times, his attitude towards it soured completely.

Fucking asshole.

I don't remember where from I got this, but it rings true: "I'm too busy to play video games".

One of co workers told me that as if they didn't do anything but work in their lives, which I know was not true. Definitely holds true for me.

Not 100% related, but I absolutely hate it when I'm on the computer and someone says that I'm playing. Because most of the time I'm on the computer I'm not playing.

There's no denying that there are perhaps some slightly negative connotations of the word, as it implies some over-zealous level of obsession with the hobby.

The word also leads to things such as "core gamer," "girl gamer," or "gaymer." Like we need this type of differentiation.

Yeah this one too. Never mind the fact that I have a family to support and work 40 hours a week and only play a few times during the week for maybe 6 hours top.

I hate the odd look when you tell someone at work that you play video games. It's like a puzzled/shocked slash quizzical look. Like it's difficult to believe that a 33 year old man would be into such "foolishness".

I can't help it that I'm so precocious and full of wonderment. LOL

Just because I like games doesn't mean I need a label.

Is that applied to everything you do or just games?

Not a fan of it myself.

Guess I never had a problem with that....I use the term freely.

Was having a conversation about Watch_Dogs with a friend last month and his girlfriend overheard and said we were addicted to video games..I asked her what level she was at on Candy Crush..something like 380-390.

While not applicable anymore, when I was in my teens I used to always hate "Are you winning?".

"I'm really into video games"

Oh yeah, what do you play?

"Call of Duty", "Halo", generic Bro shooter
The funny thing is, that doesn't make them any less of a gamer than you even if they are only playing DudeBro games. Just because they do not fit into your definition of what a "gamer" is, doesn't mean your definition is correct.

I hate when women categorize men who play video games as "losers."
I suppose this could apply to either of the sexes, but I agree with you.

I really don't care about prejudices or whatever that people ignorant to the medium have, but this is the only thing that can slightly irritate me. People who are self-declared "nerds" or saying things akin to "I'm such a gamer" when they play an extremely small library and know next to nothing about the industry.

Is one "really into television" if one's a fan of watching 1-2 reality shows with dedication? Is one "really into movies" if they watch the two biggest summer blockbusters on a yearly basis and that's it?

My 360/PS3 can play 1080 gaming too.
And I don't need to spend that much for a gaming PC.

Me: ...(internal thought: Don't say anything, just agree with him that displaying an unscaled picture is the same thing)

Edit: Aww damit, I misread the title as another gamer saying thing to you that would annoy you.
