"PlayStation Vita? What's That?"

Are there even many games junior high kids can play on the vita? Most of my collection is 16 or 18 rated, and these are pretty much some of the best games the vita has to offer

I'm enjoying playing through Final Fantasy X HD on my Vita. So whatevz.

That thing about which we have a daily "doom" thread

It's more like asking a question why SCEA left it as it is without any means of marketing. It's fact that Vita been great lately with all of the announcement especially the three exclusives, but it's also a fact that SCEA put a poor effort in supporting the Vita marketing-wise. Europe have some bundles, while the latest bundle SCEA (will) released is PSV 2000 Borderlands bundle.

I would say the problem is that after the initial low sales Sony decided that it was not worth it to spend too much money marketing the Vita.

Only because people are bored of Wii U bashing at the moment. That will pick up closer to E3 and the Vita will get a bit of a break :)

I bought a Vita the other week mainly to use as a remote play screen for my PS4. It's the prohibitive cost of the memory sticks that has stopped me using it more often. I just can't justify the cost of buying a decent sized stick at the moment. It completely slipped my mind how crazy the prices are or i would have held off for longer.

So the Vita stays in it's box for now :(

And then, I've also got a relative who's been gaming all her life, worked in a game store for a while, calls the thing "PSP Vita" consistently.

The nice lady at Argos cheerfully called it a "PSP Vita" when I bought mine because that's what it was called in her system, that helped set a new record for the onset of buyers remorse.
Luckily that feeling didn't last long once I started playing it.

Vita is a stupid name, if Sony simply called it PSP2 it would get much higher sales. Possibly enough to be taken seriously by anyone other than indies and japanese dating sims devs.

I had someone think it was a PSP once during a family picnic
They asked what games I had on it and I said Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, Gravity Rush, WipEout etc. They told me that they sounded like weird games :(

Needless to say you left your family after that, right?

Definitely, PS Vita sounds more like an internal name than a final product. PSP was successful enough for its name to be a valuable thing, if I was Sony I would still change the name on the US with the release of the slim version.

Whenever I've had friends over, even those who casually game they usually spot my Vita on the coffee table. I have been surprised on numerous occasions when they're like 'what's this? Is it a PSP?'

Today I was at a friends house and their junior high age kids heard I have an Xbox One and PS4. When they asked about the consoles I said I also have a 3DS and Playstation Vita. That was followed by 'what's a Vita?'

Has anyone else noticed how Sony can't market their handheld at all?

I'm still not clear on what Vita is actually. But DS to 3DS, Wii to Wii U and PSP to PSVita are really bad transitions. Nobody is clear on the improvements, and nobody cares.

What? No. This is the least of their problems. PS Vita is ok, even if people tend to say "PSP Vita".

That's the problem - PSP Vita implies that it is an add-on or a new revision of PSP, therefore most PSP owners see no reason to buy it unless they dig deeper and learn that it's a brand new console. It's basically the same as Wii U, same issue. The other problem is the lack of support from both 1st party and 3rd party. We've had KZ:M last year, but what's the next big game? There is no such game. Compared to Vita PSP's library is amazing, most major franchises were present on PSP, it got it's own exclusive GTA, GT, AC, MGS, FF, GoW and so on. Vita has none of that.

Seeing how COD MP is infested with 8 to 12 years old kids I don't think that is the problem.

The problem with Vita is and always was mismanagement from Sony. They never gave it the support it needed and this time they didn't have Capcom to save the day with a MoHun, or any third party support at all (outside Japanese niche titles that have been hitting the system lately). Probably they just want it to die quietly by now, because the market is changing and they don't want to invest more money into it. And considering how it is doing everywhere (again, outside Japan) it makes sense, financially at least. Let the indie train ride it until it becomes (even more) irrelevant.

Full disclosure: I don't think Vita is a bad machine or that it doesn't have enough games to justify a purchase (if you are a enthusiast gamer). My only grip with it is only, ONLY, Sony's management. Apart from the launch (and you could even argue about that as well) they never seemed to care, and there was never a big push to save the handheld. Probably they made the right decision to not invest too much to save it, so I can't blame them for it.

guess it depends who is asking

It's kinda funny how in the US (and probably Europe) kids don't know what a Vita is while on Japan they don't know what's an Xbox. It's really hard for companies to bridge that gap when it comes to games or hardware that aim for international appeal.

Being a Vita owner is like being an underground hip hop head or a fan of an indie rock band nobody has ever heard of....feels good man.

The fact that people ask me whether I am playing my Vita when I pull it out is a testament to three things:

a) How bad the Vita marketing is
b) How great the PSP marketing was
c) How casual said people are

A few friends haven't recognized the Wii U, but at least some have. Nintendo Land is still the go-to with my main group of friends.

I was talking with my friend, who is not a casual gamer, he owns a Vita (though that has to do with me telling him about the awesome games I'd been playing on mine), and I mentioned that it and the Wii U were in a similar sales bracket at this point. He said "Aren't they direct competition? That's the weird tablet thing, right?" because he thought the Wii U was a tablet accessory... and that it hadn't even come out yet.

On the other hand I know two other people at work with Vitas.
You're a software developer or work in a Game Stop, right?

There are three others in my office with a Vita, but everyone has a 3DS :(

FYI, use a galaxy tab USB converter and you can charge your vita with a normal USB charger
A PSPgo charger works fine with the Vita USB cable too. I bought a couple extras of those when they were on blowout at HMV for $3 each and they've come in real handy.

I originally wanted a Vita but couldn't justify the high price with the lack of quality titles. I figured I would wait until the library expanded and fleshed out. However the system fizzled out and most developers stopped supporting it. I mean I'm aware of what is available and the some what strong indie support but I personally feel that even to this day there isn't enough titles I'm interested in to warrant a purchase. I very much doubt I'll ever own one.

I'm a lucky owner of Vita because, I have games to play, I know a lot of people who own this handheld, etc

As a friend of mine said : "A console isn't that good if there isn't the game you want."

I'm thinking on buying this so called Playstation Vita. Don't know if you guys heard about it but a friend told me it's a great console and a really good complement if you own a PS4.

That thing sold 10k last month in the US... is that really surprising?

Try asking them if they wanna play the Wii U..... :(

It sold 10k because there are literally none and have none been delivered to retailers in months... I don't expect many will start stocking them again once they do become available (my local Walmart, Best Buy, and Target have all reclaimed the shelf space that was for Vita and games for other game products).

Sony screwed up bad, not just on initial marketing, but also in this switch to the 2000 model. They completely cut off all marketing, they completely cut off all future shipments for many months, and they've effectively said nothing or very little to most retailers (I did get confirmation that my gamestop would have a couple of the Borderlands bundle when they came in... literally like 2).

The only place I ever see anything about Vita is here on Gaf, which is a die hard place and therefore really enjoys the niche and dying... Why do you think there are so many of us Nintendo fans here? I kid....
:(

Honestly, they should try to use the 2000 launch to start all over with marketing. Get some TV ads going. If they want to compete against smartphones, show it with stuff smartphones don't have. Show off popular games like Killzone or BL2. Throw in some Tearaway and indie games. Show PS4 remote play in action. Push the benefits of PS+. There's lots of great reasons to get a Vita and most people haven't heard any of them.

If I were Sony, I'd freeze all marketing until Minecraft Vita is out, then go nuts with one major commercial campaign as a last shot. Highlight Minecraft, CoD, Assassin's Creed, Borderlands, and two other noteworthy but kid-frienly(er) franchises, maybe Ratchet and Gravity Rush. If portable Minecraft won't save the Vita, nothing will.

Sony seems quite content with simply releasing games for the established base they have in the West, which already has a high attach rate.

vitas good if you like playing games from a few gens ago on the go. FFX, persona 4, MGS2, MGS3, FF7, FF8, etc...

as far as new content to distinguish itself it hasn't done a very good job at selling itself though :(

Should have stuck to their simplistic naming conventions. PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, PSP2.

Not PSV. PSP2 should have been it. Playstation Portable 2.

Portable Minecraft exists, on phones. Minecraft will -not- save Vita.
