Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

Why not? Everyone has their favorites that they want in and he's more or less the perfect candidate for the next metroid rep. :p

Couldn't care less personally but others want him so yeah.

hmm.....
someone make a grayed out Ridley that we can use in the future

:P

Jesus, whatever.

Why is this vocal fanbase so obsessed with Ridley?

Name a more iconic Nintendo character who isn't playable in Smash Bros at this point?

Ridley has appeared in more games then almost any other character in Nintendo's roster, he plays a major role in Samus origin story and other extended canon Metroid material, AND he's been a major boss/villain in all but 2-3 Metroid titles.

He's been in more games then Bowser Jr, King K Rool, Ganon or Impa, etc

Honestly it makes a lot of sense why people are loud about him

I think sales are much more important than number of games when it comes to how iconic something is...

Half the Mario cast is more iconic than Ridley. Toad, Waluigi, Bowser Jr etc

And Mii's obviously.

Star Fox having 3 reps will never make sense.

Toad, the Koopalings, Lolo, Duckhunt Dog, Diskun.

Which TF2 character would be the most entertaining to play as in Smash?

You're right, why not? As long as they all play completely differently, I'm all for it.

I want to answer this for some reason. Spy would be near useless in Smash Bros as all could see him, and Sniper would lose his charm and what makes him the Sniper in something like Smash Bros. Medic would be possible, but make less sense than other potential candidates. Engineer would be interesting to say the least, but arguable if he would work or not. Heavy is probably the most iconic, and his moveset would come naturally as he has punches and such in game. Pyro would be interesting as there are no pyromaniacs in Smash Bros as is. Demoman would be interesting, but then the explosives category might collide with Snake (who is not in Smash 4). Soldier might be a bit basic, but imagining rocket jumping in Smash amuses me. Scout gotta go fast.

Why is NeoGAF so obsessed with Ridley?

He's a giant purple dragon, a Metroid representative, he's basically the main antagonist of the Metroid series (and the second most reoccurring character of the series), he's a giant purple dragon, he can turn into a robot, he has cool alternative forms with cool names like 'Omega' and 'Neon', he's a villain character which Smash needs more of, he's a giant purple dragon, he has a cool potential moveset, he has awesome theme music, his boss battles are often some of the most difficult and fun in the Metroid games, and HE'S A GIANT PURPLE DRAGON.

Toad is the only character you mentioned that has been in more games then Ridley and is arguably more iconic. You're crazy if you think people would know who Lolo, Duckhunt Dog, or Diskun is more iconic then Ridley

Then Ridley what? :P

Koopalings are certainly more. Mario is a more popular franchise and they've been in 7 games across over 20 years. Lolo is a precursor to Kirby and has appeared in several Kirby games. Duck Hunt Dog is very famous.

Toad, the Koopalings, Lolo, Duckhunt Dog, Diskun.

Seeing this got me wondering, I don't think Nintendo actually owns Lolo/Eggerland. They probably have publishing rights to all the ones released on their consoles, but HAL was pushing them out on PC into 2000.

I wonder what the deal with that was.

Well it was created by Iwata and Lolo and Lala have appeared in Kirby games and that awful Kirby anime. Just add extra syllables to their names.

I guess. It's pretty bizarre though how every time I open a Smash thread -- no matter the subject -- someone will be talking about Ridley. Is it really that big of a deal? I can see that Metroid fans want it and sure enough Metroid fans probably want another character in Smash, but it's like 80% of all Smash discussion is about Ridley. It's not that unique of a character anyway.

Are you saying you think discussion on Ridley has gotten too big?

The lack of discussion regarding possible alt skins is disappointing.
Since Little Mac is getting a retro skin, I think it's only fair that other Nintendo veterans get one as well.

Toad, Toadette, Goomba, Koopa, any of the Koopalings, Bullet Bill, Cheep Cheep, miscellaneous anthropomorphic hill from SMW, hell even Waluigi.

You say "hell even Waluigi" as if a great injustice is not currently happening by him only being an assist trophy.

But Mother Brain is THE villain of the games she's in. Ridley is just a goon. I'd say she's still more iconic than Ridley.

Nah, Mother Brain is only in Metroid, Super Metroid, and Zero Mission. and Ridley was prominently featured in Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 3, and Fusion, which all sold over a million copies, in addition to the three aforementioned games. And since I doubt many players who played Super actually got to Mother Brain, they know Ridley from the well-known introduction sequence. Same with Prime 1 and 3.

And the Melee intro, too.

edit: oh, forgot about Mother Brain in the Other M intro. Eh, I don't think anything from that game will be labeled "iconic" (at least not in a positive way), but the Mother Brain sequence it took from Super Metroid certainly is. Still think that Ridley is a much more prominent character from the series.

Appearing in more games doesn't make a character more iconic than another.

Besides, a character more iconic than Ridley that hasn't been playable? Just make a giant list of Mario and Zelda characters.

Edit: Oh and Pokemon!

And Pokemon. Characters like Brock that were in the anime are some of the most iconic Nintendo has.

I just popped outside and asked someone if they knew who Ridley was. They said no so I can confirm that the man in the street does not know who Ridley is.

I'm still holding out for Princess Marth, no need for Lucina.

What have we learned about creepy fanart in the past?

Prominent != iconic

This arguable, only people who would know who Ridley is would have to give a shit about Metroid. It's not like he is ALWAYS in the spotlight like Bowser or Ganondorf.

If game sales really were the cardinal deciding factor in whether a character gets in Smash Bros or not, Star Fox, Fire Emblem etc. would be lucky to get a single character. Pit, Ness and ROB would have no chance at all. The roster would mostly be composed of Mario and Pokemon characters, and maybe Link.

Thank god roster diversity, moveset potential and Sakurai's whimsies also play a major part...

Too bad he doesn't care about Metroid.

The thing about Ridley, for me:

Of the 12 original characters in Smash 64, most of them have villain representatives by now.

Mario has Bowser
Link has Ganondorf
Kirby has Dedede
Pikachu had Mewtwo
Fox has Wolf

Of the remaining ones:

Captain Falcon and Ness are arguably not part of big enough franchises to get a villain rep.

Yoshi hasn't really been a separate franchise since the N64. And besides, Bowser kinda goes for him, too.

DK has K. Rool, who would be pretty cool, but he hasn't been relevant since the SNES.

Metroid, however, has both Ridley and Dark Samus, excellent potential villain reps for the series. Ridley is the closest thing to an archenemy Samus has, having appeared in 7 games, often as the penultimate boss. Dark Samus would be the second choice, being the final boss of the Prime series... but she's already an assist trophy, so.

Because Metroid deserves to have more than two reps because it's awesome and there aren't a whole lot more to choose from besides Ridley and Dark Samus, and Sakurai evidently holds a personal grudge against Ridley.
This is all ridiculous. Metroid doesn't "deserve" three reps more than most of the other series in Smash that only have two characters, like DK and Fire Emblem. The last part is just plain wrong. Sakurai put Ridley in the background in 64, in the opening of Melee, in SSE twice, and now put him on the Pyrosphere stage. Sakurai loves the guy.

I hardly consider Ridley "iconic". He is arguably important to Samus's story, and some of the fights against him are awesome, but for me he is just... there. His characterisation is minimal, he has been oblitarated so many times that I don't really consider it a menace anymore, and, well, he is just a henchmen of the bigger bad in all the games he stares in. He is, figurately and litteraly, The Dragon.
Though, most of the fights against him are very hard, which makes him a real adversary.

So, no, NeoGAF is not obsessed with Ridley, but we have here some very vocal people who love the character. Which is fine, except when it gets out of hand when some particular people become obsessed with it (though the person I'm thinking about hasn't post in a while I think).

Yesterday, 15 years ago, Super Smash Bros. was released for the N64 in North America.

Kirby was the destroyer of worlds in that game.

I thought Pikachu was better than Kirby despite the latter being good still.

Wolf isn't a villain.

Ah Smash 64, home of wall loop combos, down spike infinites, "Kirby's up tilt under Hyrule Castle's arch", the fastest Samus ever, C.Falcon that plays more like a Blaziken (dat forward smash and shoulder upsmash), and some of the greatest Nintendo music ever.

Good times.

- No, but he's causing big headaches in Smash threads lately.

Does anyone think it would be great if all stages on 3DS were also on Wii U. (perhaps from connecting?) I just get the feeling I'll be playing Wii U with my friends and long for a 3DS stage. The more stages the better in my book. Not holding my breath though.

You make this too easy

Edit: Oh crap I forgot "all my loli wolf companions are so moe" lol

:P

But seriously, he's not the villain. A recurring antagonist sure but not the series villain. That's like saying Metaknight is a villain.

A recurring antagonist is the definition of a villain. He doesn't have to be the main threat to be a villain.

Meta Knight can be a villain depending on the game. He definitely was in Super Star.
