US PSN: Golden Week Sale Celebrates Japanese Games

Chrono Cross and Trigger bought. Persona 4 and Muramasa would be bought if I didn't already own them. Only other thing I'm considering is MGS HD collection for Vita.

Picked up Tales, ZOE, and Time and Eternity.

Pretty clear what's the hidden gem in that bunch.

I also passed on Child of Light for now. To pick up Time and Eternity.

Tactics Ogre drops in price, insta-bought even though I don't see myself playing it anytime soon.

Now, if only publishers learned to do the same thing with DLC

I hate the feeling of having to beat 2 huge JRPG's (P3 and P4) to get to the JRPG parts of P4A. That's like 100+ hours just to start up a fighter ;_;

I can't believe MG:R is 19 GB with another 401MB on the patch!

Absurd.

I've never played it so I'm looking forward to it but goddamn at those dl sizes.

In for MGS: Vita. I've been waiting for it to join plus, but for $9 I'll take it. I want to replay them, and I don't want to hook my 360 back up.

Is order important for the Atellier games?

I was planning on Totori->Meruru->Ayesha

Within a subseries it matters some, Rorona precedes both Totori and Meruru but it's the weakest modern game so it's better to either wait on its remake or just get into Totori. Ayesha is the start of a new subseries however so continuity is a complete non-factor.

Sorry this has probably been asked already but i did scan back a few pages and didn't see anything.

So looking at the Atelier vita games, I've never played one but I do like RPG's and they seem somewhat interesting. If I were to buy only one which would be the best one to buy? Far as gameplay what would you compare them to? Trying to get an idea of what they really are like.

decided to binge because of the sale

Tales of Symphonia Chronicles
Vagrant Story
Xenogears
Chrono Cross
Persona 4

for about $35

and the problem with Chrono Trigger at least on PSN was that load times for menus would take like 10 seconds
I had to use it as minimally as possible because it felt like the game was gonna freeze everytime I opened the menu

Is chrono trigger's psx problem really that bad? Just picked up vagrant story and chrono cross.

Nope. Playing it now and I'm enjoying it.

exaggerate much? they shouldn't even be considered "load times". nothing is close to 10 seconds. they're slight pauses in the game, 3-4 seconds on my Vita.

I've budgeted $20 for this sale. I'm trying to decide between either just Totori or Muramasa and ToS:Chronicles. I'm leaning towards the latter, because after looking at some Atelier videos the style of the game looks like it would annoy me to no end.

Does anyone know if ToS on PS3 works with a DS4 controller?

Is Hot Shots Golf any good? I played the demo of Hot Shots Tennis (yes I'm aware it's a completely different sport), and I really enjoyed it.

I was thinking about Armored Core, but I tried the demo for AC4 and it did nothing for me.

I think the whole issue is that those 3-4second pauses shouldn't be there in the first place
does the DS version do this?

Thanks, good to know. Think I'm gonna pick it up as well. My ocd would bother me to no end playing chrono cross without playing trigger.

In for P4G. Been seeing nothing but positive impressions on here, and after watching a few videos I'm wondering why I've never played it.

Fair enough, I'm playing it for the first time so it honestly doesn't bother me. Just trying to say these "loads" are nowhere near 10 seconds.

Far as I know the DS version doesn't do it.

Bought

Hot shots golf (have vita version already)
Chrono cross (have SNES chrono trigger and played it last year)

Have P4G and MGS already and too much of a backlog to buy any more games

DS version is a little quicker.

The load time issue is overblown.

Have you played FFX-2 HD on Vita?
On average the fights take about 4-5 seconds to start. The post battle screen also takes way longer than FFX.

It's a matter of tolerance.. Understand that you're playing an older game.
I like quick load times too. But I'm not going to run out and get a DS to play Chrono Trigger. It's great game, play it on what you own.

How much is Xenogears?

First half is great.. The second half lacks gameplay, you'll be watching a movie.

Just a heads up for anyone thinking of buying Chrono Trigger, the fast reading option on vita helps loading times a lot in my opinion. I compared loading times for battles against the PS3 and battles take about 4 seconds less to load on vita.

So far I ended up buying Armored Core, Murmasa, and Tales of Symphonia.

I'm interpreted in buying either:

Atelier Totori
Atelier Meruru
Ys: Celceta

Since they're all 20 bucks, I'll only buy one of them (since I don't think I've seen them cheaper), but I'm having a hard time picking one. Which one would you guys recommend between those 3?

9.99

That's the feeling I have going in.

Picked up Armored Core. That mech customization is scratching an itch that hasn't been touched in a while. No NeoGAF team, though? I assume teams are like clans... Should I just make one?

It's not a matter of tolerance... Yes it's an old game, but the OLDER version didn't have those load times... The simple fact is Chrono Trigger was never designed to run as it was, and instead of trying to reprogram the game to take account the system's limitations, they did a fast and dirty port.

How fast and how dirty? The game literally has an SNES rom on which is pulling graphics from instead of being dumped and properly optimized. Yes, pulling compressed SNES graphics meant for a 4MB cartridge, on a CD that's 700MB with about 600MB of it free. That's a big part of why there is loading (that and the PS1's deplorably small amount of ram).

But don't take our word for it, check the video posted earlier in the thread from the game playing on PS3.

Loading the menu is like five seconds. Loading a battle is about six or seven.

Considering you will be doing both a significant amount of time it is awful.

I had just bought Ys: Memories of Celceta and Danganronpa at full price!

Great deals though, just picked up:

Vagrant Story
Atelier Totori & Meruru
MGS Collection HD
Tales of Symph (still haven't played Xillia yet from a previous sale...)
Chrono Cross

With PSN doing steam-like sales, my (games bought) / (games played) ratio is getting ridiculous.

Soul calibur 5 worth it? Kind of hesitant on it.
I feel like I'm more excited and gravitating towards the older games than my newer game system offerings at the moment. Maybe it's just a phase. Nostalgia always gets me though.

nope, not even the original SNES have those load times.

I really dont know how 10 year old me managed to play Chrono Trigger on PS1. I must have had the patience of a god.

Bought Hot Shots and ZOE HD so far. I might get MGR a little later this week as well. Also I have one question; does anyone know if people still play Hot Shots online? I haven't checked yet.

"Little shorter" is an understatement. Granted its a matter of seconds, but a few down to just one if even that is a significant difference.

And being an older game is a double edged sword here, given we're talking about an SNES game with no perceptible loading, and as it wasn't designed with that in mind it can stick out like a sore thumb especially as it doesn't have transition screens. But as noted it would be crazy to get a DS JUST for this, so it's more "if you have a DS or Wii you may want to consider getting it there," nevermind that $5 isn't a big deal either way.
