GOG News and Updates 2014

It's just trademarking, but that's a sign that they're inching closer to a release. On top of GOG's current dealings with the new Lucasart, we might be getting a welcome surprise this year.

Nolf, eh? That'd be great. BRB catching virgins for sacrificial purposes. I'm gonna do my part in this, no matter to whom I have to appeal to.

I actually want to reinstall NOLF right now but I think I can wait. I want to support that series and Night Dive.

This will be my first intentional double dip from GOG. Well, of the first NOLF anyway. 2 still runs fine, albeit sans proper widescreen.

I've actually never played NOLF, but if it popped up on GOG, I would pick it up like...first day and that rarely happens for me anymore

Woa, thanks!
Too bad the Vikings add-on for S2 Anniversary and the sequel aren't on GOG, but this is great for the other games.

I have the 10th Anniversary Gold Edition on disc but it's protected with SecuROM. So I hope they add the expansion pack for free, like they did with all the EA titles.

Should I go for Heroes of Might & Magic 2 or 3? I can run 2 on DOSBox, but 3's going to need a Wine set-up or VM for me to play it on Mac. I'm getting Rayman Forever without a doubt, and I may go for the Might & Magic pack if I can justify not being able to play 6, but HOMM's pretty important in this equation.

2 is like only slightly less popular than 3 overall I think, people really liked the visual style and music to 2 more for quite a while, if 3 wasn't every bit as good as it is, 2 would have probably been the most popular entry. If you haven't played 2 and enjoyed others and are looking for more, it's worth getting. The campaign mode has little narrated/animated CG sequences between levels, and you get to pick among branching paths in the campaigns and different starting bonuses for the levels.

Busy week for me, so only got to three more games to add to the recommended list.

Consortium - The Master Edition, a recent GOG release from this past week, had enough compelling impressions and a recent update that improved/added many things to the game to get it on the list. It certainly sounds like a unique game, mundane in a way like mentioned in the quotes, but then again also quite interesting with the 150,000 word count and reactive story. The ~$70k low budget is its biggest weakness, but despite that it brings a lot to the table. Not for everyone, but if you're looking for something different in a FPS-type game, it's probably worth a look.

Evil Genius up next, with a little warning... most of the impressions for the game are positive, but older, and there's a decent amount of impressions that point out it is a bit flawed looking over them. Certainly unique, and when it comes to Dungeon Keeper-esque games the list isn't too long. The evil genius spin on the formula plays out well for the most part. Impressions point out the flaws, mainly a bit tedious at times with some quirks to the AI, but definitely a strong enough reception to be listed despite them.

And finally, Theme Hospital, probably the most-well-liked from this week's bunch. More people also probably have played this one before, as it's the most popular on the above list, and it does everything very well with few complaints, unlike Evil Genius. As the quotes mention, the learning curve is very friendly and the humor is what stands out to most people. While most games struggle with their humor, Theme Hospital does not - from the various bizarre and wacky illnesses to the funny narrative, and even the announcements over the loudspeakers, all parts of the game will make you laugh. It's not a long game, but that doesn't stop people who like it from replaying it and enjoying it from time to time.

As for what didn't make the cut, just a few this week:
- Pinball World (not enough impressions, didn't make the cut)
- Sir, You Are Being Hunted (too new still, revisit in a few weeks)
- Moebius: Empire Rising (not enough impressions, didn't make the cut)

Four full months in to the year now, and the list of recommended games is up to 76, not bad. I'm quite happy with the progress and quality of games making the list, seems less arbitrary now than the simple bolding from prior years. In cases where a game isn't as strongly recommended or didn't age as well, having a little warning included feels like a nice touch too. Still, there's a lot more games to get through, the list is missing quite a few bigger titles from it. 76 sounds like a decent number, as GOG's library isn't that huge yet (maybe 500+), but I feel the ~75 probably will double to 150 before I'm more or less caught up. Then it should be a nice resource for people looking to browse for a new game to buy or whatever. It also serves to keep me more up to date on the current releases, seeing which are noteworthy that I may otherwise have overlooked, so that's good.

And finally, at some point (maybe next month, maybe towards the end of the year, I'm not sure) I'll transition to a monthly thread like most of the other digital download platform threads (iOS, Steam, PSN, etc). I guess I'm probably overdue, and the OP is already more or less in order to work as a monthly thread, it just needs a tiny bit more restructuring. Hopefully everyone still sticks around, despite having to re-subscribe 12x more often. The thread is definitely enjoyable and useful to me, thanks to everyone else here contributing when a new item is added to GOG's library or a good sale or thoughts on a game/company/policy are posted. :)

Good show, Minsc. Your hard work is very appreciated.

As for the ubi sale, I just picked up POD Gold and the last POP game I needed.

They just added an executable last week that allows for toggling between the original and expansion music.
Excelent. I simply can't play as Knight without hearing Isabel Bayrakdarian's voice when entering the castle scene. It feels very odd otherwise.

Looking at the games' list, I've noticed Anvil of Dawn. So the licence ended up with Ubi?

Not-exactly-a-release: The Whispered World's been updated to a Special Edition, with commentaries, achievements and an orchestral soundtrack. Looks like existing owners automatically get the updated version. The price is now higher than it was, too, but is currently on sale.

Edit: Oh, this is interesting. Apparently over on Steam they charged for the update. I guess the GoG version being free for existing owners is in response to that backlash.

Edit2: Daedelic seem like they might have gone back on that on Steam, too.

Edit3: Also now DLC for Outlast is up.

Sword of the Stars: The Pit looks really interesting and I didn't realize there was so much background lore and previous games that make up a series.

I definitely wanna pick this one up off GOG when I have the money. Looks great.

It's an enjoyable game for sure; quite accessible too, for a roguelike.

Loads of releases!
One indie, one classic release, one remake of a remake (!), one kickstarted return to a classic series.

1849 $12.75 (Normally $15)
F117A Nighthawk $6
Real Myst: Masterpiece Edition $12 (Normally $18)
Tesla Effect $20

Nice to see more from the Tommo deal.

Edit: Interesting thing about RealMyst: No free upgrade for existing owners, but the discount is up for longer if you own the game... which doesn't strike me as a great perk, but hey.

realMyst deal's the best so far, but I have multiple machines my dad owns that can play the Masterpiece Edition either on Windows or Mac OS. So anyone willing to justify this purchase for me? (I haven't yet completed Myst, so I'll be starting a new playthrough, following up with Riven).

Fairly large weekend indie sale

Games I can recommend without doubt are:

Spacechem - amazing puzzle game
DROD 1-2-3 - even more amazing puzzle game pack (with tonnes of user generated content)
To the Moon - good Visual Novel kind of game, very touching conclusion, lovely music.
Anodyne - love letter to Game Boy Zelda games, enjoyed every second of it.

Two Spiderweb series (Avernum and Geneforge) are also included in the sale, if you can tolerate some amateurish production values, they're well worth the price before discount.

Another small batch of three games added to the recommended list this week.

Realms of the Haunting, now on both Steam and GOG, comes pretty highly recommended. It's probably one of the older games I missed I'm most looking forward to playing. A hybrid of FMV / adventure / Horror/ FPS / RPG / more that manages to impress most of the people who play it. Any game people say how great the atmosphere is has the right priorities imo. I guess the quotes speak for themselves, people just love the game, not much more to add here. Oh, there's a bit of customization you can do to optimize the control layout via DOSBox, so if things seem awkward hunt down some suggested configurations to change to.

Next is Divine Divinity, and I'm glad to finally see they've fixed the issues with the background music. I didn't even notice it when I put my 5-10 hours in the GOG copy, but there was apparently a bug that kept the music from switching tracks properly, and you got the same couple tracks over and over. The music is really great, which is why I've been going on about it, and now it's fixed, so yay. The rest of the game is your typical jank combat system with a bit of depth that is punishing at first and you grow to be godly towards the end. Mix that with good writing, and lots of game to explore, and lots of positive impressions and you have yourself a recommended game.

Then lastly the sequel, Divinity II: Developer's Cut, which is Divinity II + the expansion. The original Divinity II release was rough, framerate cap at 30fps and unoptimized engine, etc... patch irons a lot of that out, brings the framerate to 60fps and so on. The game was a bit hit or miss, but more people seemed to like it a lot, so it's on the list. The whole bit in the quotes about mind reading sounds like an interesting plot tool to me, and people often point to the writing/game humor as selling points, and also world design. Combat sounds like it was a bit flawed, but people still generally enjoyed the game. From reading impressions the plot goes to some interesting places later on too, without spoiling anything.

Well that's about it for this week. Last week's releases all came sorta late in the week (thursday-ish), so I still have to look in to them for next time. As always, if anyone mentions a game I'll try to get in in to the queue for being reviewed to be added. So if you play something from GOG that's good and not found here (there's a condensed list at the bottom too), be sure to mention it!

Gamespy on GOG :

Arma Gold Edition

Arma : Cold War Assault

Arma 2 : Combined Operations

Neverwinter Nights: Diamond

Neverwinter Nights 2 : Complete

Sacrifice (not 100% sure on this one)

Anyone know any others? I think Arma 2 is probably going to be pulled from GOG, they are switching the game over to steamworks.

Just wanted to say what fantastic customer support gog has. I got a code for tesla effect from big finish but when i tried to enter it there was a problem. So i opened a ticket. I got a reply next day that the issue was fixed and i should be ok now only to find out that i forgot to save the code and i actually deleted the mail instead of saving it(oi).

so i replied that i thanked them but i am an idiot and deleted my code. Woke today and they replied back that "hey checked your account and we believe your code was this one". And indeed it was. Was very happy.

Now i feel bad that i buy most of my games from steam and only few on gog (i have about 20-30 games there). Their lack of client has been bothering me a lot (i like to have everything centralised and the chatting options the client offers).

Well anyway good job good guy gog :)

GOG is great for older games, not so great for newer ones, especially those actively developed (having to manually download patches is a bother).

Wish they could implement a non-DRM Steamworks wrapper for achievements.

I've only contacted them a handful of times but every issue was fixed promptly and the CS reps have always been helpful and nice.

I'm building up quite a GOG collection these days! I'm up to 142 nowadays thanks to the sales and bundles. GOG has basically become my PC home for classic titles and indie games. Most recent purchase was Miasmata. Sounds like a pretty interesting concept actually and I'm looking forward to playing it.

I hope they bring over that new Bloodrayne game over on GOG. I own the other two on there and I like having franchises in the one area. With Bloodrayne 2, the game freezes whenever I pause the game which is a pretty annoying issue. I enjoyed the dumb fun of the first game so it would be disappointing if I can't continue it. Did anyone else have this issue? Googling doesn't seem to bring up anything at all.

I had a few freezes recently and I fixed it by setting affinity to the .exe to just a single core. It seems the game has issues with multicore processors.

Also, the game has issues with Windows 8/8.1, I don't think it has official windows 8 support on GOG.

That actually seemed to do the trick! Thanks for that! Before it would crash my whole computer about 2 seconds after going to the pause menu but it seems works great now. It seemed to work fine outside of this when I tried to play the first level before. I didn't even need to fiddle around to get the cutscenes to work.

I couldn't get the HD mod working but that's a minor thing really. Thanks again!

I followed these steps to get it working :

http://www.coopdb.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3797
Ok, the easy mode to do it:

1. Download:

BR2_HD_ACT1_BASE.part1.rar
BR2_HD_ACT1_BASE.part2.rar
BR2_HD_ACT2_BASE.part1.rar
BR2_HD_ACT2_BASE.part2.rar

2. Unrar these files directly into your BR2 main folder, and you will end with 2 new files:

HD0100.zip
HD0200.zip

3. Your br2fsaa.ini file must have these 2 lines (in this exact order):

resource = HD0200.zip
resource = HD0100.zip

4. In the game launcher, set 640x480, and everything else to HIGH, or the patch will not be able to replace the textures. (Very important !)

Oh damn it, GOG is doing the Insomnia Sale again. Right now, it's Arcanum for 75% off ($1.49).

I'd make a thread, but I won't have time to keep the OP updated. Any volunteers?

Evil Genius is rather messed up. GoG version is the latest patch and more stable but you can't actually finish the game. There are several game breaking bugs that make the second island unwinnable. There is an unofficial patch that fixes that but if you apply it to the GoG version, it crashes a lot. A lot more than the steam version which is an older rev and doesn't play nice with newer oses.

I don't see any threads on GOG's forums about these bugs (though there are certainly lots of threads about bugs in general, all sorts, and they are all solvable by working around - like one crash scenario was a prisoner flagged for something being locked in a cell, and completing the mission would crash it, but if you get the flagged prisoner out of the cell, it proceeds properly). Some people report the game not working correctly on external drives, well drives other than C:\, but I don't see any threads at all about it being unable to be finished. That sounds like something you should submit a support ticket for, they'd probably want to be aware and potentially stop selling the game / refund your purchase if true (if it can't be fixed).

Insomnia sale's dying down, closing with repeat sales for the bigguns. One choice moment: they put Jack Keane 2 up for sale again, this time with what looked like 18000 copies! Probably just them faking us out, since the copies fell absurdly quick (maybe 18 copies in reality?), but what a glorious callback it was.

Not a fan of these limited sales if i knew Arcanum was on sale earlier i would of bought it. It punishes people in different timezones aswell.
