I think that pushmo/crashmo would make a better stage than an assist trophy. The pushmo guy could just be trying to make it to the top, and move platforms in/out as he needs, which creates platforms for the fighters.

That's actually a good point. He outright said other characters were ATs, why would he hint at Dillon and not say he was an AT if he was? He's probably playable.
I would. He has no personality whatsoever and just pushes and pulls blocks. Thinking a relevant moveset would be hard even for Sakurai's standards.

Wario did it perfectly. No reason mario and luigi can't have dr costumes. No reason Link can't have OoT link, or zelda OoT zelda costumes (face don't need to change, they're literally just costumes). Samus can have fusion suit (not just color palette).

Yep, an alternate costume should be just that, a costume, like Wario or Dr. Mario. The actual character shouldn't change unless, like WFT or Villager, there are canon (For lack of a better word) physical alternatives.

Yep, exactly like that. Those aren't even the worst examples, because at least these are all characters who have similar builds to their counterparts. But I've seen people suggesting characters who have 1 thing in common, but are completely different in everything else (like height, build and moves used in their series) to be alternate costumes. It seems like they want Smash Bros to turn into a bad mod!
I completely aggree with you. Some characters have multiple different outfits/designs used in their games, and I'd love to see those as alternate costumes. Like toon link in his pajamas, for example, or all the examples you listed.
Unfortunate that Dillon is down for the count, but they did good with the character model.

The "Dark" Link alt pallet in Brawl isn't actually suppose to represent Dark Link, as that character is literally just a black silhouette, as shown in Event Mode. Besides, including an alternate pallet that acts as a homage to another character (such as Mario's Luigi and Wario pallets, or Peach's Daisy pallet) is different from them making a model for a whole new character and just relegating them to being a skin for a more popular character.
I think a palette swap that pays homage to a different character is acceptable. I do not think its appropriate for an alt to be an entirely different character however. It's almost disrespectful and undermines the potential of a character by relegating an entire character to an alt costume.

That's only 3ds, and i'm specifically talking about mario kart 8. Mario kart 8 main theme is probably my favorite thing nintendo has put out in a while. Brought nostalgic tears to my eye.

Mario's green outfit can hardly be called a Luigi swap. Overalls are wrong color.

It'd be the equivalent to those if Mario's Wario swap also changed his nose color. Peach's Daisy colors change her hair and skin color. It's clearly meant to (badly) simulate Daisy, it's not just a Peach in a yellow dress that happens to resemble Daisy.
The same "event mode" also has "Dark Samus" as black silhouette of Samus though.
Why wouldn't you go to those "lengths" for a palette swap that has Daisy colors? Changing the colors hardly requires the effort it would take to make a legitimate alt.
