Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

"Launchers with guaranteed zero to death combos", air dash, dedicated air combos, air crash are more than just options, they'd completely change the flow of all battles.

Smash 64 had 0 to death combos for every character. It's not as if all of these will even be in the game. They might bring in new mechanics or cut mechanics like they've done with previous and future iterations.

A lot of characters already have dedicated air combos and a metagame completely circulated towards playing in the air.

It's obvious I'm screwing around when I talk about making things harder a la adding QCF/SRKs and other execution moves but it's not like the flow of all battles haven't changed in each iteration of Smash.

Like other franchises of the genre, the formula changed slightly in each iteration whether it is physics, mechanics, or overall gameplay. It's not like people expected or asked for certain mechanics like power shielding and air dodging and it's really all part of an evolving process.

I'm really just shooting things that would fit that criteria. SSB4 has it's own perks separate from it's past iterations and of course it's not gonna be a Melee/Brawl/64 2.0 much like how my suggestions aren't a "Street Fighter/Tekken/BlazBlue" 2.0 kind of thing.

Yeah what am I thinking, let's go ahead and give Smash an exclusionary learning curve.

It seems I misunderstood your intent. Thought it was an extension of the idea that Smash is an innately better fighting game than anything in the genre.

I love Smash and I value its accessibility because it means I can gather friends and actually play it with them

but, and honestly I don't know how this sentiment kept cropping up during the Brawl days, but it's not like many suggested alterations to the formula (or any of Melee's for that matter) imply less accessibility, no, just a higher skill ceiling

I'm the type of dude hoping for automatic L-cancelling and air grabs though, I think there's ways to retain technicality and a high skill ceiling and more offensive options while keeping things relatively simple

Well then, it looks like we're...

They're just options.

Things like being able to cancel a grab or follow up after a dive kick are buffs that are much needed in some characters.
Dive kicks don't need follow-ups, they need less start-up lag. Even with follow-ups, they'd be completely useless thanks to shielding, air dodging, etc. Look at Metaknight in Project M; he can actually use his "dive kick" Dair because it's fast.

Grab cancels are not required because of the mobility element of Smash and the lack of air grabs. The only way they would improve the game is by removing degenerate grab infinites like Dedede's that should have never been in the game to start with.

A "crash" in the air effectively turns the tables and gives you a second chance to beat out your opponent.

They're options that aren't hard to do and would add depth to gameplay in other ways than just one.
Mega crash cripples offense and there's already a more interesting skill-based anti-combo mechanic in DI.
I'm not talking about a single character
Sheik was just an extreme example. Every character uses tilts.

Tag battle as a Special battle would be a nice mechanic
I like the idea (basically a universal transforming character mode); I guess taunt button would swap characters.

Boxing Ring confirmed as one of my favourite stages, can't wait to play there, it feels... cozy...? Guess it's the lighting and the absence of pits. I love stages where you can move freely and where you have a solid footing and a little more relaxed pace.

About Greninja's FS, yesterday I dreamt it wasn't cinematic at all, just an in-game combo like Link's one. (why do I dream this stuff? O_o)

Come to think of it, air dashes already were in Smash. Melee's air dodges were basically air dashes, complete with triangle jumping. I wouldn't mind going back to a more expanded version of Melee's air dodge with follow-up attacks.

Or maybe a character-specific thing like Peach's float.

Back to today's update... since Sakurai singled out that "even Little Mac" can get up to the lights, is it reasonable to expect that he has the absolute worst recovery in the game? I hope so, because everything else about him seems completely unbalanced.

At least worst out of those announced so far.

Also I really don't want other games' mechanics in Smash, I want it to be different and unique, if anything they should create new mechanics, not copying old tropes.

His entire air game is hilariously bad. Not just low recovery, but also low hitstun and knockback.

I have the feeling he'll be not nearly as good as people are anticipating just because he's completely helpless the moment a decently strong attack like a throw sends him up or away.

Always been confirmed that Mac has a terrible air game

The guy basically flails around for his aerials and has no recovery. Zero air game means he'll probably end up being pretty bad.

Pic of the day. You can get up on the lights of this special ring. It's a perfect secret hiding place.

And you can attack the lights and have them fall to the ground! That makes things dark. The lights are way up high, but even Little Mac can get up there by jumping off the ropes.
Sweet!

I'd be surprised of a character had worse recovery.

Today's date is kinda neat, might be fun to hide up there.

This is actually pretty cool.

That's pretty cool. Smash after dark edition.

This new addition to the Boxing Ring stage is awesome. That said, I wonder if the stage will have a final destination variant considering how odd it would be for a boxing ring with no ropes and floating in the middle of nowhere

How fucking rad would that have been

Better a SNORLAX clone than a PALKIA clone. No one even liked that mechanic in spear pillar!

I don't think I even need to say it

I remember there was an edit of this with Sakurai in place of Red but I can't for the life of me find it.

I almost thought about saying 'and NOT that your #1 character is an assist trophy', because I *KNEW* there would be an ashley post :p

Of all the reveals so far, what is the MOST DISAPPOINTING for you?

For me, it's:

And, not that he's not playable, but rather that he DOESN'T SUMMON THE MOON.

Well we don't know he doesn't do that. Some pokemon and assist trophies can use different abilities.

I'm hoping he still does, but you'd think they would have shown it? Maybe if the moon asset hasn't been completed yet, then I understand, but then, why show him off to begin with?

It's also not like knuckle joe/dark samus where they do one attack, and then another.

Kinda had to flip the world and THEN summon the move. It just doesn't work all that well (maybe it does? I'm having a hard time imagining it, though.)

I can't even think of anything that I'm really disappointed with.

Did you saw Smash Direct? They basically confirmed that Skull Kid will have same effect as Palkia's.
