Week of May 5th to the 11th, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at SolarKnight!

What fighting games do you currently play, what are your all time favourites and why?
Currently I play mostly UMvC3 and BBCP,with some Skullgirls, KoFXIII and Smash in there when I have the time and people to play with, but I like to give most fighting games that come out a try.

As for my favorites, I’d say that it’s the KoF series in general and the VS. series, even if mostly out of nostalgia. Skullgirls too now that I think about it because it’s just fun overall and the constant support it gets from Lab Zero.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
For favorite definitely Skullgirl’s custom assists. Not only does it help give a game with a limited roster potentially much more variety, but it helps solve Marvel’s issue of not having your favorite character’s potentially best supporting attacks available and means everyone should be able to have multiple assists worth using.

As for worst, it’s probably not the most original response, but I just have to mention MvC3’s TACs too. It can just potentially be so much reward for random relatively little risk. Personally I feel TvC did something similar better.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
It was finding an SF2 arcade cab (either WW or CE I can’t remember) at a store near my cousin’s house. It was one of the first videogames I ever played so I had no idea at all of what I was doing, but I had so much fun and tried to go there to play as often as I could. Back then it was just very exciting to me when I found out how to do a special move by myself rather than just accidentally doing them while mashing. Competitively, that only started a few years ago, since I grew up without anyone to play with something that wasn’t Smash Bros (and even then it wasn’t that often) and my parents just wouldn’t let me go to the arcades more than a couple times a year.

Other genres I play would be platformers, with my favorites being the Mega Man games (all of them).
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
This is a hard question. Currently, I guess I’d say UMvC3’s Rocket Raccoon and Strider. When a match goes well with RR it just feels so good, and having your opponents fuck up and get hit by the spring super because of their own fault/hitting Wesker and Vergil out of their super with it is never not hilarious. As for Strider I just really enjoy how fast he plays.

I guess in general the characters that I like the most are ones that are either fast or annoying to the opponent.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
My style used to be pretty much only rushing down and nothing else, but recently I’ve discovered that I also like just being really annoying with zoning characters.

Most of my UMvC3 play is offline these days, and there are some pretty good players in the local community so that helps keep it entertaining. Every other game is played online mostly, the “anime” games community is just not as big as the Capcom games one (I’m sure I can count the P4A and SG players with one hand) and they tend to have their gatherings at the same time as the Marvel ones but at very different locations so I have to choose one or the other usually.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
My biggest strength is that I don’t give up I guess? I mean, with how bad my local tournament results are (consistently) I’m not sure what I can say, but the fact that I’m still playing competitively as much as I can says something I think. This is a question that can be answered better by someone that’s not me I guess hahaha.

As for weaknesses, definitely my execution. I just simply can’t count the huge amount of times my failed execution of something has gotten me killed.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
I’m gonna have to mention two moments for best. The first one is getting out of pools at the Divekick side-tournament in the previous EVO, that’s pretty much the furthest I’ve gotten in a tournament not counting that one P4A tournament I got top 4 but only because we were only 8 people and the level was really low. The second one is having the audience cheer for me and get hyped during my match even if just because I was playing someone from another state…which leads into the worst one in recent memory which was losing said match.
What do you want from future fighting games?
I only ask for more PC releases and better netcode, that’s all that I want.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
Hmm, I think we should give Skullgirls GAF some attention too, so maybe DiscoShark?

If you have any suggestions for the OP, please do not hesitate to post in this thread or PM me to let me know.

After watching ep 10-13 of Excellent Adventures, I'm glad that they brought back K-Brad in the next episodes 14-17. He's pretty cool guy.

Oh I see. The way you have it worded doesn't make it seem like you're talking about the forum in the first part of the description. Whatever then.
Better?

I just want to represent it accurately in case someone isn't into Capcom games as much.

EDIT: Still sort of awkward.

Jeez I'm so tired. I'll post stuff about the event. Probably tomorrow after I drop the JP players at the airport or Tuesday

A bit off topic but I was at Stunfest in France this weekend and a bit before the finals of SF4 I saw two players dropping their shirts to play an old sega arcade cab.

This event was amazing. :'D

So we have a string of Skullgirls players in the weekly interviews -- looks like we're going to find out if FGC-GAF has more Skullgirls players than VF players.

Also, reposing for the new thread: The Transcendental Orchestra (a fan-run national 3v3 tournament for Melty Blood, keeping French Bread's tradition for nonsensical Engrish names alive) is currently live on NicoNico. Thankfully there's a rebroadcast on Twitch, for people that keep getting kicked (aka everyone).

What about those who play both some? ^_^ I'm terrible at SG now because I didn't put the time into keeping up with it, but it's a fun hit some buttons game. I often wonder how SG would have turned out competitively and popularity-wise if the game was less brutal to learn.
(though Mike Z did a great job of making the game non-brutal in the areas that count for those who put the effort in)

I can't help but feel watching this that T. Hawk's opponents aren't as familiar with the matchup and are just straight-up terrified. I get being hesitant to do much when T. Hawk jumps because he can condor dive, but condor dive is actually NOT that good of an air-to-ground. It loses to a lot and is mainly for catching people in their recovery.

An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

I'm just looking at this now, but I'm going to make good use of this.

For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at SolarKnight!

I'm really enjoying these GAF spotlights. I mean, you get to know people geenrally from their posts, but you always find out something new about them with these.

Good read, SolarKnight.

We so anime now.

Is this new? Looks like someone maybe capped the HDR animation?

I've seen Ryus punish blocked Hawk Dives a ton, but Evil Ryus don't- any reason for that?

The speed increase will make certain footsies for Hawk a lot better- if Hawk gets easier footsies that alone would be huge (guessing the blankaball punish now is either jab spire or a walking cr.strong/forward)

He got a walk speed upgrade right? He's terrifying just on that basis now. I didn't realize how drastic it was until I watched the first match.
Yeah, his ground pressure is crazy now, but from my own time playing the character, when he jumps at a range where he can either condor dive or empty jump SPD, you're probably better off just DPing that shit. If you keep T. Hawk honest his air shenanigans are pretty much just after knockdowns or a ground whiff like a fireball.

Face Guard won that with Venom.
There was good character variety, but I don't think I saw a single I-No.

Just like Accent Core

Is there an archive up on Ustream. Not sure how it works compared to twitch. Would love to watch them this afternoon once I'm done with finals

So the money match didn't happen? So when we do the Marvel funeral are we reading the patch list or the money match breakdown for the eulogy? I guess we can read one at the reception and the other at the burial site.

Top 8 at NWM was hella good, with tons of variety of characters and playstyles and a lot of exciting moments. Marvel's not dead yet.

There's plenty of games that are dead. Marvel is far from being one of them. But then again how hype would the finals have been if Chris G was a part of it?

Enjoy it while it lasts.

No, Ustream archiving sucks.
Latest video is 8 months old.

I imagine a-cho will upload to their YouTube though.

Yeah, here the Sakura player did a good job at anti-airing T. Hawk, and when T. Hawk was too far out to empty jump SPD, she just waited to block it.

also helped by a super impatient Hawk. That said getting zoned out as a grappler is really frustrating, and it's hard to fight that impulse.

That said, I do think Hawk's weaknesses are going to be known more/exploited more in Ultra, so I think you'll see more of this- I just hope it isn't so much that Hawk drops to below mid tier.

"Dahbomb's Marvel Fanfic"
That's quite the thread title. I'm sure it will only fuel more Dahbomb impersonators in twitch chat.
.....
I completely missed NWM, any good Marvel matches worth watching the archives for?

I take it the Nemo vs F. Champ Money Match didn't happen?

Damn! It really is a shame about the lack of ongoing support for the game. A balance patch would do wonders for it....

I still find Marvel as enjoyable as I always have.

I'm enjoying it more now that the talent level is higher and there's less people who don't have a chance at winning filling the brackets.

Outside of people keeping up the troll, we won't find out if UMVC3 is really dead or not until after EVO.
