Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

Biggest disappointment for me is not using Skyward Sword Zelda. All the Zelda characters being based on TP or WW feels like they haven't moved past Brawl in that respect.
I'm glad they didn't use SS Zelda. I'd rather they go with the classical concept of Zelda (the purple-clad princess, also seen in OoT, ALttP, ect.), which is what they did. It's relevant to more games in the series, whereas SS Zelda is presumably a one-time design.

I'd love to have SS Zelda as an alternate option, however.

How can an inclusion mean disappointment? You don't have to use him, he doesn't make the game worse for you.

because he could have been another character more appealing to me, I never said it made the game worse for me, but it dosen't make it better either, since I couldn't care less about that character, that's why I compared it with R.O.B, unless it's random, I never use it

this, TP Zelda is such a hottie

Do you think we'll get 100% media blowout for smash 4 like we did for mario kart, tropical freeze, and 3d world?

Literally everything about those games was known to the public before the game was released. I hope there are still secret characters and stages :(

I hope not but it's possible it could happens since there are notion with Sakurai not liking the fact that Internet seeing things before playing the game.

After the hype backlash that was the Dojo for Brawl I certainly hope not. Knowing everything about MK8 has killed so much of my hype for it... hopefully Sakurai still respects the importance of unlockable secrets, both characters and otherwise.

I think with everything we know and everything left to reveal, I can't say I'm disappointed in anything thus far. There's enough reasoning and collective understanding to "get" the current decisions in the game and there's still a massive chasm of stuff we have no knowledge of that could influence the game.

So I guess I'm #TeamNeutral right now.

How fucking rad would that have been

There need to be more ATs you can interact with or "Boss" style ATs where you summon them but the risk/reward is so skewed that you have to fuck them up yourself or pray you get lucky and dodge their effect while everyone else suffers. Dropping the moon on everything was just something that should have been.

Alternatively, if the Skull Kid did the atmospheric "ominous zoom in at the last moments of a day" shrinking the area of the screen (and thus the match in progress) a few times, that'd have been cool too.

There's really no question.

One day she'll get the respect she deserves.

Smash 4 is not that day.

I still remember feeling so deflated and happy at the same time that she was confirmed to be an assist in Brawl. Seeing it happen again was one part bittersweet and one part "Why.jpg" especially if Awakening has truly become as popular as everyone claims.

Put_Lyn_In_Project_M

of course this turned into "your favorite character that isn't playable" immediately >_>

Characters are the biggest thing for Smash folks, even the folks who enjoy the core game play. Some people see it as playing with their nostalgia while others see variations of combat design that mesh well with the free form nature of the game.

As such, it'd be a given that characters would be high up there or number one.

Let's think about this from a design perspective though. What advantage does a wavedash give the player? It's good for positioning and movement, right? It also enables the fighter to use any attack/ability upon landing. It puts them into a 'standing' state, even while sliding, so they can perform a move that can't be performed while dashing. Is that about the general idea?

Why have wavedashing/wavedash button if you just enable all the stuff wavedashing enables? Allow shielding/sidestepping/specials while dashing. Allow faster direction change, or something to replace it (back roll from a dash, for example). Give all of the utility that a wavedash provides without actually needing to wavedash.

The same can be said for L cancelling. L cancelling is the most pointless gimmick mechanic ever. Press L to speed up recovery? Why not just speed up recovery without the need for pressing L? All you're doing is punishing people for not pressing L at the right time.

There are ways to keep utility, or remove the need for said utility, without needing to keep in wavedashing or L cancelling or anything of the sort. I'm all for that. No need to give me carpal tunnel syndrome so that I can stay competitive.

I pretty much agree with all of this, but I also feel like if it's a solution that we will have to wait however many revisions for, you may as well reintroduce what worked and draw upon it as a basis for continued experimentation until you find that special twist that makes both Melee wavedashing and L-Cancelling an irrelevant or obsolete practice.

[...]ZSS is just awful. Not only has her design changed for the worse but her animations have apparently been tailored for MAXIMUM FANSERVICE. Samus deserves better. Metroid as a franchise deserves better.

...how exactly have her animations been "tailored for maximum fanservice?" I just see lots of kicks and flips and nothing overly implausible, no focuses on highly elaborate female anatomy, or landings in cat sprawls Bayonetta style. That Miiverse pose is eh, especially since it's one frame out of a guaranteed longer animation that no one's going to pour over meticulously in the middle of a match.

Sometimes I feel like the outrage over Smash 4's ZSS is wholly lost on me.

Hopefully that makes more sense after this years e3. Regardless though I'd rather have all the Zelda characters with similar art styles. Toon link excluded of course as his art style is the point of his character.

Actually, I can kinda agree with this. It's too late to play the "optimal visual style/Smash has it's own identity" card, especially since the designs have changed 1:1 with what's current in every game and the roster members from said games since the 64 to Melee transition and I don't buy any person's opinions on "doesn't look like a fighter" since Smash is very readily able to make fighters out of anything with the potential.

It really killed my hype as well. It's like knowing all of your presents before christmas morning. Like, it's cool that I get to unwrap and play with my toys, but I already knew what they were, so it's only 1/3rd as cool. I don't understand the strategy behind this. Maybe they think that showing off all the cool things the game has is a good way to get people to pick up a Wii U and the game, but it totally kills the buzz for people who already have a wii u and plan on buying it anyway.

well, since we have wireframe Little Mac, do you think we will get other costumes? like SS Zelda, Dr. Mario something like that?

It's been talked about a lot already :)

I can has civvie suit samus?

Also other suit samus:

So big question guys.

What do you think of the possibility that Sakurai and the gang will purposely hold back a few characters on the 3DS version to bring more hype to the Wii U Smash release? I'm betting at least 4 months between releases and when the Wii U version comes out even more characters will be revealed that will be free DLC on the 3DS.

I'm sure there will be plenty of modes that will really separate the 2 versions but nothing says hype like new characters and I just don't see the whole roster being shown to us even before the Wii U version. Thoughts?

Yeah, I'd actually love that Samus.

We should also get Farmer Link, Pajama Link, Conductor Link, and Skyloft Resident Link.

I've thought about that. Would be a neat idea to include them in a free patch after wii u release. Also a way to force people to connect to eshop and make a nintendo network id. I think it'd be good for skins, too.

However, I think we'll just know everything and the hype for the wii u version will die down substantially unless they announce some amazing wii u exclusive modes. Character hype > all other hype, though, so it'll be tough.

I doubt it, not everyone is going to be able to get the DLC even if free you know.

Then they'd have to use SS Zelda, who wasn't really a fighter, & we wouldn't have Ganondorf (or he'd still be his TP self, which would be jarring).

At least Sheik was planned for TP but was cut, with Brawl using the design she was supposed to have in TP.

My bad, I started it. I changed the topic to what you're disappointed in, and now everyone is posting 'what ifs' and 'what do you think', myself included. :p
Nah, you're doing good. Better to read this sort of discussion than all of us taking turns talking about punching the lights out.

biggest disappointments for me:

toon link appears to still use the same moveset. i think it would be easy to incorparate one or two different specials for him (e.g. deku leaf).

fox is still ugly.

otherwise, everything's looking good :).

Not happening. I doubt every 3DS user like small kids will download DLC.

We'll have the full roster by the 3DS release and I assume the Wii U reveals will only be more details on stages, modes etc.

That hasn't stopped Nintendo from making DLC for even Mario games though. Or the whole Pokemon bank thing.

If they want to see the Wii U version selling, they pretty much need to do that. Namco has experience with time locked/free dlc characters in TTT2, so it's not even something that would be odd to their staff either.

That's not completely true, Melee ignored Majora Mask as far as Young Link's design goes (It's the same Link, but shield and weapons were all based on OoT, rather than Majora's Mask - even the weapons that young Link only used in Majora's Mask, like bow, are actually their Adult Link OoT versions for Melee's young Link).

Topic change:

Of all the reveals so far, what is the MOST DISAPPOINTING for you?

For me, it's:

And, not that he's not playable, but rather that he DOESN'T SUMMON THE MOON.

This might not be great to say here but the Greninja reveal capping off the Nintendo Direct, while cool to watch, is probably the most disappointed I've been yet in Smash Bros promotion.

I had heard from my brother that there was a reveal at the end of the Direct and that he'd thought it was pretty cool, I foolishly got my hopes up for an Earthbound-centric reveal...

It was cool to watch, but Charizard and Greninja just aren't my favorite pokemon, would have been more excited for Mewtwo, or an updated trainer.

I was really hoping for Ness and Lucas, and maybe a new item or Assist Trophy.

They [little kids] most likely could [update] if they wanted and Nintendo can make the download of patches mandatory on the 3DS IIRC. It still theoretically could happen, although I doubt it.

(I'd be all for adding characters to the rosters via DLC to prevent those dirty Gateway 3DS ***** from fully enjoying the game and seeing them cry on GBAtemp, waiting for a Gateway update which allows to appy patches :D)

They could easily be downloaded via spotpass automatically, if smash bros has such a system in place. I doubt it, but it's theoretically possible.

I hate how most of the time when people start discussions/topics, it has a negative connotation.

"Who would you want to be CUT?"
"What is the worst case scenario?"
"Which character would you not miss?"
"What's your least favorite stage?"
etc.

I don't really care whether people do talk about those topics, but man so much negativity. I guess that applies to the Internet in general. Negativity makes it more interesting than positivity.

EDIT: Like the current topic is actually interesting and has never been discussed before I think.

I'll try to be more cheerful next time :)

Like, what's the one thing announced so far that you didn't even think about anyone including? :p

Also, including alternate versions of stages (specifically final destination versions). I think this is a step in the right direction, and definitely something nobody predicted.

Final Destination versions of the stages instead of the ability to turn hazards off.

Sakurai can still fix this!

IIRC Sakurai specifically stressed he won't include that option since PSABR already has it. Such a proud man, won't even rip the single good feature that mediocre game had off.

Final destination versions of stages! I think that is just a terrific idea! Not only that but all characters having finishers to their multi A combo. No more trapping people against walls with 1 button.

I just remembered from that pic as well items can be used on the FD stages as well. I keep equating them with pure no none sense matches but its great we can do as we please with them.

Where did he say that? :O

In this interview

PN:What level of customization will be present in the game?In the past players had access to a great many options, notably regarding items. Are you going to implement new ones, such as being able to switch off damages caused by stage hazards?

S:You will still be able to control the apparition of items, but you won't be able to turn off stage hazards. If we did that, you'd find yourself with PSASB!

Also for glory mode isn't worthless because its fd only, its worthless because it seems we can't pick if we do 1 v 1 or 4 way brawls. If I'm going for glory I want 1 v 1 only

This is incorrect. The infographic specifically stated that 1v1 matches were possible in For Glory. It was why they made a point that For Fun matches were always FFA.

Dammit gaf, why'd you get rid of the dark skin. edit: oh its back up.

Anyways loving the new PotD, through it's kind of odd theres still no Punch-out character hazards for the stage yet.
