Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

Topic change:

Of all the reveals so far, what is the MOST DISAPPOINTING for you?

:(

Most disappointing thing?

Maybe only 2 tracks per stage on 3DS, but hopefully that'll make up for itself with better quality tracks.

My biggest disappointment so far is definately the ZSS redesign but I ain't even bothered by it that much. I'm more bothered by the people who genuinely can't understand why anyone would be bothered or refer to ending stills as some sort of precedent for this

but whatever I don't give a shit Samus will be my main all day every day as long as Snake isn't back in

The most disappointing thing is that the Wii U version won't be released until winter. And based on Sakurai's previous titles this means 2015. :(

Anyone else think that during the lead up to the release of the Wii U version we'll get CG trailers of all of the hidden newcomers? I think that would be awesome.

Yeah, I think the biggest disappointment for me so far is the 3DS version releasing long before the Wii U version. Sucks that the version I'm actually looking forward to won't have the same new Smash Bros. feeling that Melee and Brawl had at launch.

This is incorrect. The infographic specifically stated that 1v1 matches were possible in For Glory. It was why they made a point that For Fun matches were always FFA.

I think you should reread what I said, Sakurai states that you can even get 1 on 1 matches, not that you can select to do 4 player matches or 1 v 1 matches. If I'm going to compete for glory where my wins and losses are tracked I only want to do that in 1 v 1 matches. Last thing I want to do is get a L on my W/L % because I placed second in a four player FFA.

I still can't tell who is in the rafters in today's pic. It looks like it could be Samus or Mario with FLUDD, but honestly it looks more like Gambit (from X-Men) than either of them.

Ah, well, we still don't know if For Fun/For Glory is just going to throw you in a game, or if you'll get to choose any options before it does matchmaking. I can understand your concern, though.

Love how people are calling the 3DS version "crappy" months before its release and with zero indication that it will actually be crappy.

What's wrong with you people? And I don't mean that in the colloquial, half-joking "what's wrong with you lol" way, I actually mean what's wrong with you?

Obviously this doesn't apply to everyone, but still. To those for whom it does...

If I had to guess, it's due to the lower quality graphics, the fact that one would be using a 3DS instead of a standard Smash controller, and that forcing each player to own a copy of the game and a 3DS makes playing the game with friends extremely difficult.

In other words, if you're the kind of person who likes Smash for the multiplayer component, the 3DS version is undeniably worse.

Personally, I'm still excited, if only because we get to see Chorus Men early. And if unlocks get transferred over.

It's because handheld ports of major console games almost always end up being cheap, poorly done cash-ins. Though that's also because companies usually outsource those ports to D-Tier studios, while Smash 3DS and Smash Wii U are being done by the same team.

I don't see how it will be "undeniably worse." Different, sure. But worse? Online multiplayer will be a big component of Smash 3DS. Anytime you have wifi access, you have people to play with. And there's zero reason you can't get together with friends to all play Smash 3DS together in the same room. I did it all the time with Mario Kart 7 and DS.

I'm of course not saying that it will replace Smash Wii U's couch multiplayer, and I myself am looking more forward to the Wii U version than I am the 3DS version. But thinking that and acting as if the 3DS version is going to be a guaranteed shit-fest are completely different.

I don't know if that's "almost always" true, but regardless of whether it is or not, we're talking about Sakurai, the same guy who was in charge of Kid Icarus Uprising, one of the best, most lovingly-crafted games of the last decade and maybe the best 3DS game ever. That anyone thinks he's going to turn out a crappy Smash game just because it's on 3DS is objectively ludicrous.

I think most people are losing sight of that fact and are just using the common sentiment I expressed to jump straight to the conclusion that Smash 3DS is going to be shit. And, if there's one thing people love in this thread, it's jumping to conclusions without knowing all the facts.

Ain't that the truth.

Oh well, rant over. Time to go back to hoping Ness gets revealed this month!

Smash 3DS is such a weird concept when you really think about it. Online has never been a huge component of smash due to the fact that Brawl's online wasn't that good. So really, Smash has primarily been about couch-gaming, for lack of a better term. Having everyone in the same room and watching the madness unfold. 3DS is basically the antithesis of that.

Sure, you can have people in a room playing multiplayer, but it's still kind of a gimped experience.

So with the full Wii U roster being out in the open as soon as the 3DS game releases... what is Sakurai going to keep updating the site with afterward? I mean, I'm sure he could throw anything out there but I wonder if the Wii U version has a lot of features that we have no idea about thus far. Otherwise I don't know what will compel me to check for updates as obsessively as I do now.

All a matter of perspective. Some folks, especially near of all Japanese gamers at this point, don't glorify the couch/big screen experience like we do.

Stages? And maybe he'll put up the music remixes?

Yay gaf is back. Was in the middle of trying to post this before it went down.

Looking at This interview i wanted to highlight this:

S: It's hard to tell right now but of course we always try to keep the best balance.Nevertheless I do not know yet if it will be easy to patch the games once they are released. For example, if you have a person playing a patched version of the game playing against a person without the patch problems may occur. We will have to do a lot of research about this.

That said I think patches are very important to keep the game balanced once it's out.As you already know players are very interested in knowing whether a character is considered strong or weak on the Internet.

And sometimes you have to see if those perceptions are correct or if people are just following the popular opinion. We really want each character to have their special abilities, with statistics balancing their strong points.

We want to put forward specific each characters' specific abilities but at the same time players have to ask themselves if they accept the Internet reputation of a character. It's something we have to take into account when we will create patches.

He brings up a lot of good points. 1. I'm really glad he's considering patches to fix stuff that's broken. 2. It's hard to know what's actually broken/bad vs the perception that something is bad. Ice climbers, for example, were ranked pretty low in tier lists until recently, I believe. Once people figured out the chain grab potential, they rose in competitive play. If you buff something whose potential hasn't been discovered, they can end up being too good. If you nerf something that seems good, but can be countered when you figure it out, you nerf it into oblivion. I wonder if they will actually use the 3DS/Wii U gap to figure this out, or if they'll wait longer.

I'm really looking forward to patches we might get! Woo. Super excited.
