Getting banned was the best thing that happened to me. It made me take stock of my life and appreciate the world a little more.

People often think they know, and they are almost never right.

They're probably assuming that it was whatever mod was active in the thread at the time and/or was engaging them. This is often not a correct assumption.

I'm roughly 100% certain of who banned me the first time. It's pretty cut and dry when the ban message is a literal continuation of the last thing a mod told you in the thread before he decided to ban you.

Unless of course you guys have a policy that goes like so: Cyan has had enough and decides someone needs a ban but he feels too close to the situation to be highly impartial, and therefore hands it off to Steve Y. to verify the ban is deserving and puts it into action. In that case, it was still Cyan that set the wheels in motion! I'm just guessing, but is "two-mod verification" every a thing for on-the-fence decisions to ban?

I'm certainly more interested in those, yes. I also do make jokes on occasion, which almost invariably fall flat because they 1) aren't funny or 2) take people so by surprise that they don't actually think it's a joke.

This problem is only exacerbated by my particular sense of humor, which is dry and sardonic. It doesn't translate well over the internet even in the best of times.

Anytime I've seen you make a joke, the thread immediately derails because too many people are taken by surprise.

Quality over quantity, friend. Either extremely high or low quality will do, but remember that a tag follows you forever. If I thought people would see me as a poster who would get canoe raped I just... I can't even.

Often when it's "obvious," it actually isn't so obvious. A few people I've been engaged in discussion with have been banned by other moderators. I didn't want to ban them, because I hate banning people who are arguing with me -- it's difficult to tell whether I'm justifiably banning them or if I'm banning them for less noble reasons, as I am a human -- but of course the person in question automatically assumes it was me.

That observation isn't particular to me, of course. I've banned others doing the same to other moderators.

It must be tough to discern when someone has crossed the line when they are arguing with you and it would come across as a bullying tactic if you started to warn them first but you can't win if another mod bans them because they will alway assume it was you.
