Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

If we are going to entertain the idea of Sceptile
again
, I'm out. Only real shot for a Gen 3 character is Blaziken, Gardevoir, Deoxys and Plusle and Minun; and two of those are Pokéball characters.

I highly doubt these new Pokémon games are going to influence Smash significantly (if at all).

It's funny how you all say Sceptile has no chance now. I wonder what everyone would've said if someone had suggested Wii Fit Trainer before Smash 4 was revealed...?

Stop acting all high and mighty about character predictions, it makes you look like an asshole.

Oh so that's why it sold badly

It seems someone touched a nerve.

I obviously wouldn't have predicted Wii Fit Trainer, but Wii Fit Trainer is objectively the best character to represent Wii Fit. Sceptile is not the best character to represent Ruby/Sapphire. There's literally nothing in Sceptile's favor outside of the unsupported "starter trio" fan theory. Even among the gen three starters -- just the starters -- Blaziken is infinitely more popular, promoted, and merchandised than Sceptile. Charizard consistently ranks among the top Pokémon of all time in various fan polls (see here or here), and Greninja is widely considered to be the most popular X/Y Pokémon (see here or here). Sceptile just doesn't compare. It's not iconic like Charizard, and it's not newly popular like Greninja.

I may or may not be extremely bitter after the tirades of people going "oh yeah Wonder Red was never likely anyway" and "gosh you shouldn't have gotten your hopes up" and "Smash isn't for niche characters only popular ones" earlier today.

It's awfully silly to say things like "haha wow look at these losers who think Sceptile will be in" when the roster is effectively a product of Sakurai's whim above all else. I am guilty of doing such things as well, actually, and I will try to avoid it in the future.

It might be worth noting that the odds are high that Greninja was picked for the roster before XY even came out and he could become popular - the roster was almost certainly finalized quite a long time ago. That Game Freak or Sakurai would want to complete the starter trio is just a theory, sure, but it's no better or worse than any other fan theories as to what sorts of characters get picked for Smash.

I'm ambivalent about Sceptile personally, but to scoff at the notion that anyone could reasonably see him as likely, or even just possible... seems quite harsh to me.

Also, I believe that a handful of people had suggested the Balance Board itself as a character rep from Wii Fit, given its presence as a "mascot" of sorts in the game itself. I think a lot of people would have said that was objectively the best character to represent Wii Fit just a year ago...

Serious question.

How did they get grenades and rocket launchers in and keep the current rating in Brawl? Is it because they're seen as more comical?

For whatever reason, as long as they aren't depicted realistically (i.e. a grenade causing gibs or limb-loss), explosions are considered cartoon violence.

The rule of thumb I was actually taught: If Bugs Bunny is doing it, would you consider it disturbing or funny?

- Shooting Elmer Fudd in the chest: Disturbing
- Giving Elmer Fudd lit dynamite: Funny

- Pushing someone down the stairs: Disturbing
- Putting a hole underneath someone: Funny

Someone did say WiiFit Trainer would be a character before Smash 4 was revealed. That same person now isn't saying Sceptile will be playable lol.

Also, Sceptile is the least popular starter from the 3rd gen, a generation that doesn't need to be added to the list of Pokemon characters we already have. There's zero reason to expect him. He's also different from WFT because he's not the main character in Pokemon. He has no chance.

I'd be okay with Sceptile and Jiggly as the last Pokemon though I highly doubt it will happen. I think Mewtwo got a pretty good push lately so he has good chances.

So.

Pikachu - Electric
Charizard - Fire/Dragon (Mega Evo)
Lucario - Fighting/Steel
Greninja - Water/Dark

And possibly

Mewtwo - Psychic
Jigglypuff - Normal/Fairy
Sceptile (if you're feeling hopeful) - Grass

That wouldn't be a bad bit of type coverage right there. Would cover more gens too, even if there's still a slant towards Gen 1.

lolwut? Sceptile? just because of Omega R and Alpha S?? I don't even know

we have too many pokemons already, just get Jiggs and we are done

I think people are thinking Sceptile mostly because Charizard and Greninja.

Either way though, really really not going to happen, I'd say.

It's also worth noting that TPCi creates these generation mascots to be popular by design. Both Lucario and Greninja were likely chosen as playable reps before their respective games were even out because of how well they appealed to certain demographics in focus testing, and they worked their magic to give them the spotlight.

The only gen three Pokémon who I’d say “deserve” to be playable are:

Blaziken - the most popular gen three starter and probably the most popular gen three Pokémon in general

Plusle & Minun - planned for Brawl, pushed early on by Game Freak, represents the (then new) Double Battle system

Deoxys - it’s already been confirmed as a Poké Ball, though

The other legendaries are also popular/promoted (Latios, Latias, Kyogre, Groudon, etc.), but they don’t lend themselves to being playable.

With that said… I don’t think there’s going to be a playable gen three rep. There are cutoffs for games like Smash Bros., and even in the event that Sakurai was told about the remakes in advance, that doesn’t automatically mean he’s going to include a playable gen three Pokémon.

my entire life has been a lie!

Sakurai will acknowledge the release of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire by adding Sceptile to the game, and people will start whining about there being too many Pokémon.

Speaking of, I wonder if tonight will be a Gen III related pic, like maybe a picture of Torchic or something.

People will riot over no Mewtwo.

Or ask for queen Jigs to be cut for Mewtwo, which is blasphemy of course.

Besides, with Pokkén being rumored for so long, is proper representation of every Pokémon series in Smash even worth it at this point? Just give people the few remaining popular characters left, and leave it be.

You all complaining about getting Pokémon as a fighter when some don't even get their favourite as a Pokéball summon. Consider yourselves lucky sometimes!

How in he actual fuck are there too many Pokemon in Smash 4 when what have been revealed right now (4) is less than Brawl (6).

I honestly expect 6-8 Pokemon. And I expect them to be the revealed ones + Jiggs, Mewtwo, Squirtle, and Ivysaur. Though the last two are more what I'm hoping than what I'm thinking. If that happens we will have gained one (1) Pokemon newcomer and recovered one (1) cut veteran. The only thing making Pokemon representation look bigger is the separation of PT's Pokemon (RIP in peace, Red).

Yeah, exactly. I believed that it's almost same for anime right? I could be wrong tho.

In cartoons, explosions don't kill people. That's why explosions are ok.

Swords don't cut people, either. Leonardo had a sword, never once cut an organic being in the cartoons. Only robots and objects. That's why marth/link are ok, they don't cut! They might as well be hitting with a stick.

I agree that if we are going to get a grass starter to complete a trio it'll probably be Sceptile, but I also have a really hard time imagining a scenario where Sceptile gets in over fellow gen 3 starter Blaziken.

This makes perfect sense. Thanks for your input on the subject.

I'm actually surprised Zelda did get away with some stuff that goes beyond cartoon violence as you mentioned.
