Johto and Unova's starters were so bad. I never liked Typhlosion, but it got even worse once the Phys/Spec split was implemented in HGSS and it couldn't use the elemental punches effectively. Unova's were disappointments across the board, especially Serperior. My goodness, I never thought we'd get another starter as poor as Meganium again but then the ole snake slithered in. Gen 3's starters are good (except for Sceptile) but they've got lots of designs bits that make them look weird.
And I have to agree with everyone else who disagreed with Infernape being called crap. Sinnoh's starters are excellent, but the Son Goku pokemon was fantastic.
