Do we have confirmation that the "Ridleys" are actually a unique species? What if Ridley was developed as a sapient chimera bred for war by Mother Brain?
There's one real Ridley, a Robot one and a Clone as far as I know.
He's probably the last of his species though or something. He's ridiculously hard to kill though since he can regenerate his body by eating other organisms.

'Muricans have this skewed idea that Metroid is one of Nintendo's biggest, most popular franchises just because it has a cool, Western Sci-Fi inspired art direction that made it really popular over here (in a niche sort of way) and really un-popular over in Japan (the only market Nintendo actually cares about). Because of this, they feel that Metroid deserves a lot more than 1 rep, even though iconic, recognizable characters is something Metroid doesn't have a lot of, and Ridley is probably the only other entity in the franchise [excluding Hunters and Other M (for completely understandable reasons)] that could make a decent playable character.

Sheik has never been anything other than a woman in disguise, why would Sheik suddenly be something else?
EDIT: Sheik may be a separate character icon on the character select screen, but Sheik is still Zelda. They didn't just invent a character here. I mean, Zero Suit Samus is not a different person from Samus.

Sheik's a woman. I've always felt this. If anything Zelda was given an athletic Sheikah-like build for her body type. OoT Impa was pretty built also. Her outfit even consists of wraps around her chest to conceal them.
